Gale was absolutely my "Swiss Army" character in my recent HM completion. He carried a bag with every scroll I had found in the game, ensuring that even if I was out of spell slots I had plenty of spells for him to be useful. In the final battle he practically won it for me and didn't even have to blow himself up.
And the blighted village just over the wall next to the windmill, in the hole, there is a red book that you can use to store scrolls. It doesn't do it automatically but it does look good thematically😂
I just want to say your guides are by far the most comprehensive out there and thanks to these videos I was able to beat honor mode on my first attempt. The detail in your guides and tier lists is just unmatched and they really paint a full picture on why each decision is made for each build/playstyle.
I took your advice on my last playthrough and ran Gale as a divination wizard and I have to say, it really was fun. I loved portent dice pop ups as well as the ability to regain them through spells (I like how you refer to that as a mini game, you’re absolutely right). Plus having to use specific types of spells made me think outside the box to try new strategies, which added another level of fun for me. Awesome build and subclass recommendation 👍🏼
One thing I was surprised you didn't mention in the cantrip selection section is that, unlike PNP D&D, in BG3 there are scrolls of four of the wizard cantrips that can be scribed to permanently add another cantrip. Firebolt and Ray of Frost in particular are pretty common in Act 1, they can randomly spawn all over the place including for sale at vendors, including the very first vendor you meet in the druid grove. Chill touch and shocking grasp scrolls also exist though in my experience are rarer, but still I don't think I've ever finished Act 1 without coming across at least one of each of the four. This means you can respec at Withers as soon as you find that scroll of Ray of Frost to learn an extra utility cantrip instead, and can learn the other three cantrips as well at really no cost beyond the 50 gp scribing cost.
Don’t sleep on Necromancer, archers do very respectable damage, and ghouls are great when you have a paladin in the group since their attacks paralize. Necromancers allow for consistent damage with summons while you focus on control and support spells.
At the fear of being the "akshually" meme again, one feat option to consider is to drop alert and pick up Dual Wielder, which will allow you to get the bonuses from two staffs and one extra AC.
Another point to emphasise is that we can learn damage cantrips (not only spells) from scrolls, on wizard I usually want cantrips which I don't learn from scrolls, than add the rest (fire bolt, bone chill...) . Thanks for an interesting build.
This is a great tip. Especially because your cantrips don’t take up a space on your “prepared” spell list. Once you learn them from a scroll, they’re always available to you.
I went for 9 Wizard & 3 Sorc because 'Twinned' Haste and 'Extended' Globe of Invulnerability are insanely powerful options I would want to bring in every fight.
I would love to see a paladin with 11 levels in it. Improved divine smite has high powered consistent damage that practically allows all divine smites to be upcasted by one level, and adds 1d8 to normal attacks too.
Single class paladin is so good! Combine this with a cleric's divine intervention: arm thy servant, which is a mace that has 1d8 radiant damage on the weapon itself as well for free lvl2 smites on every attack. Also take Savage Attacker feat so all damage dice are rerolled once + take highest.
@@emperortime4380not bad but I’d recommend against it cause War Cleric 1 gives you nothing a Paladin 12 gets you anyways tbh. You’ll get the bonus action attack from great weapon master (assuming you’re running a greatsword) etc. so it’s kinda redundant (unless for flavor I suppose). Plus Paladin 12 gives you an extra feat you could probably put on savage attacker, alert, athlete (if you wanna jump farther) or ASI etc.

Watched a ton of your other guides from delving into other games. Those guides were phenomenal and these BG3 guides are no different. As someone who consumes a lot of guide content from all sorts of games across many years, your content is by far the best presented, most comprehensive, and you have a voice for it. Thank you so much for the content, you deserve success on the platform.
I like to Multi-class on my tav, run mono class on everyone else, use the addon to increase party limits so I can have all the companions, and some mods that increase the difficulty because otherwise the game is hilariously too easy with that big a party. I am NOT very versed in D&D or CRPGs in general, and these build guides have been awesome for allowing me to better understand the individual strengths of each class, and in turn I get to learn them better as I play with all the companions at the same time, it's been a great way to just learn more about the game in general and change the way I think when playing the game.
Putting a lot of time into this game and trying out a lot of builds and really loving to multiclass I really came to appreciate wizards later on and I think this game does a really good job of making almost every class really powerful by act 3 except maybe pure rogue
If you dip sorc for only con save then lv 12 resilient con is better since it gives you one point of constitution and lets you keep proficency in wisdom saves. So the benefits you get has to be better than wis saves and 1 extra constitution. Early on it's great but at level 12 the con save from sorc has considerably less value.
Excellent guide, but I don't know if I agree with the one level dip into Life Cleric. Warding Flare from the Light Cleric is basically a better Shield which you can cast each turn without expending any spell slot. Very powerful defensive option for a squishy class like the Wizard (minus Abjuration). It's the one I would choose unless you run a party without a dedicated Cleric - which you shouldn't.
I like the abjuration build, but I was struggling with the playstyle. I am excited to switch to this in my honor mode run. Thanks for all the good work!
I like the idea of Abjuration too, but setting it up every Long Rest, costing you multiple spell slots or short rests and the ranged enemies focusing on your wizard because of the low AC makes it a very hit or miss for me. Super effective frontliner when it all works out and just fun to play with, but too many drawbacks for me personally.
@@kimashitawa8113if you take a single level in cleric for heavy armor it solves the low ac issue. i found that with damage resistance of warding bond and arcane ward the enemies wont attack you because they will do no damage to you. to fix this you have to purposely take attacks of opportunity to deal damage with armor of agathis. that build is honesly best for solo runs as the enemies will target your friends instead, if you are the only target and the enemy cant do damage to you even with a hit the ai kind of just breaks and they will just stare at you and skip their turn

Focusing on creating fields of ice with a super strong melee fighter equiped with the Disintegrating night walkers is super op. They make them immune to slipping on ice, so while everyone else constantly falls, a fighter (who can have 3-4 hits per turn, with crazy damage, that are super likely to hit) will tear through them.

Side note: does anyone else wish there were a way to redo/generate new fights after the main game with your full build? I don't like that by the time I get all my cool stuff there are so few things left to fight.
I feel that the endgame lacks a goblin camp situation. It would have been cool if you had to really sneak/fight yourself through a larger portion of the upper city before the final battle and had a variety of situation to use all those juicy spells on.
I think the air myrmidon is very underrated being that it has a huge silence tornado move, being the all of the elementals can teleport This is extremely effective at locking down spellcasters
Ray of Frost is my overall favorite damage spell. Magic Missile is a given, but RoF has it’s own power, since ice surfaces are OP. I love screwing up bosses with a little ice. It comes in handy in so many more circumstances than expected. I have beaten big bosses with it many times now.
For headgear, since you didn't mention it here, if you are likely going to specialize in a damage type (e.i. fire or thunder), using the corresponding Hat that grants Arcane Accuity can, likewise, be very powerful. Even moreso, if playing Evocation, if you'd prefer to go that route, in a pure wizard build. :)
Your videos are so informative and thorough, thank you so much for everything you do! Your insights in not only character builds, but also in the nuances of the game's combat mechanics, have helped me so much in my tactician playthrough that I no longer fell that I have to save scum every round, and I'm even sitting here making spreadsheets as I follow along with your builds to plan them out (so I don't melt my CPU by running RUclips and the game simultaneously) and even come up with my own! I've still yet to finish the game, but once I do so on Tactician I think you've equipped me with the knowledge I'll need to tackle an Honour run! Thanks again for your help!
Dear sir, Though I consistently agree with your builds I must point out a potential problem with this one. I believe that the use of the cold cantrip is not outweighed by the use of the fire cantrip. More often than the "attempt" to slow enemies down or render them inactive in combat; the penalties received for lighting or now having well lit conditions are more often and much more debilitating to a whole party than only one small group. Firebolt has a versatility that is greater. Tell me your thoughts. I watch your guides a lot. Thank you for what you do. Keep making great content.
Best wizard is Abjuration. Can always talk about damage and whatever else, but so many variations of abjuration wizard, and when you can't be killed and you're killing enemies for hitting you...nothing is stronger than that. Any other wizard needs some knowledge of the game and you need to be able to play tactically.
Anders the Tyr Paladin killed my Abjuration Wizard at level 4, later on then you are almost immortal. Especially with a 1 dip Tempest/Life Cleric and white Draconic Sorcerer Agathys dip.
@@thomasrosendahl2783 He'll pretty much kill any character if you're taking him on at that level, but as I say - many ways to build abjuration wizard, and any character in this game. I generally always go with a build that incorporates heavy armour early on and going 1 level fighter or war cleric is best early on. Reason I say war cleric is you get heavy armour and it's a class that allows multi-attack, which benefits certain builds of abjuration wizard, particularly if adding 2 levels Paladin. Abjuration wizard offers so much flexibility. The most OP function of BG3 is that you can pretty much respec at any time and so you can always change to tempest cleric later, but war cleric offers more early on
I run actually my best honor mode run (act II and failed so many times before listen to your videos). My Tav is a lore Bard and Gayle is a Divination wizard. I’m level 7 and it’s so nice to Interfere with the dices the conter spells and the bard interventions during enemy turn. I have Shadowheart as a tempest cleric and Karlac as a fighter. I killed laezel because in my last honor mode she turned against us in the crèche and I lost at this moment. Won’t play with her anymore.
Quite good. Personally though I favour 4 sorcerer (storm) 8 wizard (whichever someone prefers) so to get 3 feats and infinite sorcerer points via the 2 certain items and ofc 3 metamagic while being int focused character ofc.
A riddle for y'all: camp alchemist that can hold their own in battle without respeccing should the need arise. Surely transmutation wizard 2 rogue 1 but what else
Have you ever made any odd multiclass like making a wizard and a monk together, I bring that up because you mentioned it as an example but it got me thinking if they could work (never tried such a combo before) and it really does seem like an odd combination, Wizard is intellect when Monk is Dexterity, If I multiclass I always like use classes that use the same main abilities like Paladin/Barbarian/Fighter for example, that way your abilities aren't spread out so much (even though that's not always the case), some muliclasses just feel like they go together like Wizard/Sorcerer/Warlock, anyway, maybe you can recommend one of your vids that may be considered an odd combo, I would really like to try something different, plus I will have your guide to help me out.💯👍
I feel like abjuration wizard is the best class in the game. Its the only character ive ever played on honor mode as well as the only one ive made it past act 2 with because i make a new character everytime i hit like lvl 6. Also i never even went under 60% health the whole honor run
I feel like early game just getting 2 levels in fighter just to get access to heavy armor and action surge is amazing because as a wizard early game you fulfill the meme of dead with a 1d4
Why not take mage armor? +3 base AC when paired with the bracers of defense giving a wizard an AC of 15+dex so 18 on a normal build. With shield on that you peak at 23AC at level 1-4.
For Gale, for most of the game you'll be better off just wearing light armor since he has access to it - a shield is also usually better than the bracers, since that frees up your glove slot and they can have very powerful magic effects. For the very late game when you have some of the powerful robes it can be useful though!
I just hit level 11 and took a second level of sorc. I havent fought yet, but isnt that going to be strong with the meta magic? or am I misunderstanding?
I don't get why even picking another concentration spell when there is haste, which is pretty much better all the time. Even if not, why having like 3-4 concentration spells? :D
I actually just finished my Honour Mode run with Minthara as an EKFighter, applying like 4 reverberation per attack utilizing the boots of stormy clamour, gloves of belligerant skies, and that one magical hammer I can't remember the name of that gains +1 enchant and 1d6 lightning damage when bound. She rocked that until the very very late game where Baldurans giant slayer just outscales it, but a very fun and powerful build for proning basically anyone you swing at with reverb stacks, and dealing a bunch of extra dice damage.
I always struggle between sorc and wizard tbh I know multiclassing is probably the way to go but when builds like this one exist it makes it hard to want to
@Lucifer-sn9ir my honor mode all druid/cleric party is pretty much out tanking or AOE damaging or just controlling every encounter. I think at one point I had 10-14 summons out in one encounter.
Haven't yet seen the FULL video, as it is long, but a hint for anything that does not have access to armor proficiency, take dual wield at lvl4 and bracers of defense as gloves. This gives you a solid +3AC, which helps a ton in the earlier game. You can dual wield something like spellsparkler and like melfs first staff or something. With mage armor on top of that, a wizard has 13 (MA) + 2 (bracers) +1 (DW) +2 (Dex) for a clean 18 AC. Not bad for a 'squishy' caster :)
I think you get caught up in the numbers a bit too much. That is important but a wizard who has low HP benefits more from having temporary HP than characters with higher so the fact that you get less temporary HP is kind of mitigated.
@@Oðrun ^^ When I am happy with my place on the field and don't need a quick pick-me-up either. Currently my Gale has a spot of cleric and can hand out Blade Ward with Healing Word (or Mass Healing Word) on a bonus action, which is nice. For pure Wizard I often struggle to find something useful to do with the bonus action though.
@@anska7475 Valid point. I've got a Gale with a bit of bard, so inspiration has been an easy go-to. Wizard spell-wise, you're limited to Expeditious Retreat, Feather Fall, and Misty Step. Items with bonus actions, perhaps.
Best wizard or caster is Minthara because of her unique bonus action Soul Branding to give someone extra move speed and additional fire damage on their next attack. It is unlimited use so every turn you have a useful bonus action.
Not a stupid question, I had the same problem. I mainly used it for misty step, but I think the lack of action economy utilization is a big reason to consider adding a level of sorcerer or cleric to a wizard build. That said, roleplaying wise it’s hard for me to do that with Gale because I can’t make it make sense lol.
In regards to multiclassing: I know you recommended to take Divination wizard; however, with Abjuration wizard and a 1 level starting dip into draconic sorcerer you can pick up Armor of Agathys. Most people playing probably know about this build though...and it does play very differently to a traditional wizard.
I disagree take all damage can trips. You remember you need versatility that means having access to thunder lightning fire and ice mainly. You can always have an artifact or an item to cast mage hand leap light and numerous other things or you can just learn to spell later on
@@BIDENS_HOG so I set myself a challenge and made a wizard Tav. What I decided was to take githyanki and use astral knowledge charisma and also take a background that gives persuasion. It seems to be ok although the discount at traders is low. Never mind that I will just do the bag glitch.
Could you please do a video on all the camp casters we would need? I've seen the potion crafter but it seems like every video on the permanent buffs is incomplete and is usually just early game.
Gotta be honest, I prefer the original. One level wizard11 levels cleric. Although the 1 lv dip in sorc is nice. Learning all your wizard spells from scrolls. If the only spell you won’t have is counter spell, I power of having 2 casters in one seems much more powerful.
I must disagree with the stat spread. While Gale doesn't necessarily need charisma, he definitely has some. He managed to seduce a goddess after all...
40d6 AOE Damage!!!??? WTF??????!!!!!!! In a single turn???!!!!! WTF????!!!!!!!!! Seriously broken!!!!! hahahahahahahahahhahahahah So, let me see if I get the strategy right. You summon your water myrmidon, cast great invisibility on it, send it to start combat by dowsing everyone while you are sneaking (or invisible, why not), then you move in to position yourself and cast your broken Icewall, start combat, cancel your Icewal, and if anything is still standing.... since they are wet, chain lightning their sorry existances before they can even start to understand what just happened... hahahahahahahhahahahahaha In this scenario, I think you can "overkill it" a bit more by doing a 1 level Storm Cleric dip first, but that would be just for the fun of it. :D
it is hilarious, how you dont pick the best lvl3 spell in the game just to prove a point. But I don't believe that you ever played a wizard playtrough without having Fireball ready at 99% of the time. And suggesting to have wall of fire and bs like that instead of fireball is just nonsense.
This is from the One Shot Lightning Lord? This current title is different so just making sure. Nevermind Im dumb. The title is the same. I just mixed it up with one shot

I've still yet to finish the game, but once I do so on Tactician I think you've equipped me with the knowledge I'll need to tackle an Honour run! Thanks again for your help!
Thanks very much!
Dear sir,
Though I consistently agree with your builds I must point out a potential problem with this one.
24:25 Kinda difficult to put 3rd level spells I haven't unlocked yet in my prepared spells
The most OP function of BG3 is that you can pretty much respec at any time and so you can always change to tempest cleric later, but war cleric offers more early on
My MC is a wizard and I kept Gale in camp and used him to case Mage Armour, Longstrider, etc. to buff my party.
I request you do a build guide inspired by Magic Man from the cartoon Adventure Time 😊
I run actually my best honor mode run (act II and failed so many times before listen to your videos).
Have you checked out Balatro?
just watched this video again. Thanks so much. So thorough. 🤙
I spent all my gold on learning spells I'll never use. I think I have an arcana addiction. :(
What about spells you can learn only from scrolls throughout the game? What do ypu think about spells like artistry of war and dethrone?
A riddle for y'all: camp alchemist that can hold their own in battle without respeccing should the need arise. Surely transmutation wizard 2 rogue 1 but what else
Actually transmutation Wiz 2 10 bard would be ideal, full caster with expertise for medicine, can be lore for support
Transmutatin 6 for trans stone. Constitution proficiency stone is amazing.
Have you ever made any odd multiclass like making a wizard and a monk together, I bring that up because you mentioned it as an example but it got me thinking if they could work (never tried such a combo before) and it really does seem like an odd combination, Wizard is intellect when Monk is Dexterity, If I multiclass I always like use classes that use the same main abilities like Paladin/Barbarian/Fighter for example, that way your abilities aren't spread out so much (even though that's not always the case), some muliclasses just feel like they go together like Wizard/Sorcerer/Warlock, anyway, maybe you can recommend one of your vids that may be considered an odd combo, I would really like to try something different, plus I will have your guide to help me out.💯👍
Great Guide :)
What is the music that's playing softly in the background around 1:08? It sounds like the radio or something.
Thanks! Just the background music from the character creation screen
I feel like abjuration wizard is the best class in the game. Its the only character ive ever played on honor mode as well as the only one ive made it past act 2 with because i make a new character everytime i hit like lvl 6. Also i never even went under 60% health the whole honor run
I'm subscribing because of how you break up the video timeline. King.
First time watching any of your videos. I like it!
Thanks, welcome!
How about sorcerer dip, cleric dip then the rest wizard? A double dip.
I feel like early game just getting 2 levels in fighter just to get access to heavy armor and action surge is amazing because as a wizard early game you fulfill the meme of dead with a 1d4
Wall of stone should be a 4 elements monk spell too. Why can't monks have any earthbending?
Where are there a ton of undead at level 4? I've not even taken on Karlach's fake Paladins at level 4.
I can't find your BG3 playthrough - can you linke here please?
If im taking the 1 life cleric dip, would the stat spread be any different?
I don't get why even picking another concentration spell when there is haste, which is pretty much better all the time. Even if not, why having like 3-4 concentration spells? :D
would love to see your take on a 12 lvl eldritch knight build that focuses on on-hit effects like encrusted in frost :)
Wizard is a swiss army knife, sorcerer is artillery. Cleric is divine tool box. Druid is the whole hardware store.
Basically!
Not bad for a 'squishy' caster :)
doesn't hypnotic pattern hit allies and self?
I think you get caught up in the numbers a bit too much. That is important but a wizard who has low HP benefits more from having temporary HP than characters with higher so the fact that you get less temporary HP is kind of mitigated.
Ty mate 😍
33:13 what a flex dude lmaoo
It's maybe a stupid question but what do Wizards best use their bonus actions on?
Misty Step? 😄
This playstyle of wizard reminds of the color blue in magic the gathering
I don't expect an answer, but can anyone tell me why I have one less prepared spell than this guide? :)
Intelligence?
Why didnt you choose mage armor?
"to annoy nerds in the youtube comments" - subbed
Is it me, or I can't see most of the level III and level IV spells in my gameplay while exactly following the guide? :(
I believe you are seeing spells his character has learned before respec.
@@briandavis7334 I did realise later haha
Thank you anyways dude :)
In regards to multiclassing: I know you recommended to take Divination wizard; however, with Abjuration wizard and a 1 level starting dip into draconic sorcerer you can pick up Armor of Agathys. Most people playing probably know about this build though...and it does play very differently to a traditional wizard.
Yep, I talk about that in the video - you can find my guide to that build under "the mighty tank wizard"
Now can you make a blade wizard that doesn't multi class and is still effective?
I'd like to see that. It's difficult since they wouldn't have extra attack, but I definitely think with the right gear that it's possible.
What about rings ?
I disagree take all damage can trips. You remember you need versatility that means having access to thunder lightning fire and ice mainly. You can always have an artifact or an item to cast mage hand leap light and numerous other things or you can just learn to spell later on
Request for a best warlock build update, if there's any notable changes 😄
It seems to me that it is impossible to have a wizard as your Tav.
Putting points into charisma or taking feats for it all seem a waste for wizard so I agree.
@@BIDENS_HOG so I set myself a challenge and made a wizard Tav. What I decided was to take githyanki and use astral knowledge charisma and also take a background that gives persuasion. It seems to be ok although the discount at traders is low. Never mind that I will just do the bag glitch.
That’s false they are rare but I did find counterspell scrolls.
You sound so much like Strimtom from DDO videos.
Could you please do a video on all the camp casters we would need? I've seen the potion crafter but it seems like every video on the permanent buffs is incomplete and is usually just early game.
I like illusionist trickster rogue
A Wizard with no Fireball? Blasphemy...
He managed to seduce a goddess after all...
wait since when did wizards start using intelligence instead of wisdom
🔥🔥🔥
Good points but fireball
Lol thank you
40d6 AOE Damage!!!??? WTF??????!!!!!!! In a single turn???!!!!! WTF????!!!!!!!!! Seriously broken!!!!! hahahahahahahahahhahahahah
So, let me see if I get the strategy right. You summon your water myrmidon, cast great invisibility on it, send it to start combat by dowsing everyone while you are sneaking (or invisible, why not), then you move in to position yourself and cast your broken Icewall, start combat, cancel your Icewal, and if anything is still standing.... since they are wet, chain lightning their sorry existances before they can even start to understand what just happened... hahahahahahahhahahahahaha
In this scenario, I think you can "overkill it" a bit more by doing a 1 level Storm Cleric dip first, but that would be just for the fun of it. :D
it is hilarious, how you dont pick the best lvl3 spell in the game just to prove a point. But I don't believe that you ever played a wizard playtrough without having Fireball ready at 99% of the time. And suggesting to have wall of fire and bs like that instead of fireball is just nonsense.
Idk what it is but you sound like a very trustworthy person
Divination? I don't know. Seems like inspirations make divination mostly pointless.
It's amazing for clutch combat moments. Boss saved against hold monster? Divination says they didn't 😎
AFAIK you can't use inspiration in combat. Making an enemy fail a saving throw on a spell like Hold Person can turn the tides of battle
Inspiration can't reroll an enemy's attack roll; or your own.
Divination is super fun. Try it!
This is from the One Shot Lightning Lord? This current title is different so just making sure. Nevermind Im dumb. The title is the same. I just mixed it up with one shot
Thanks
