    OMG Chris! Wonderful!!! The freedom to just play, and have it sound great!!!! I was trained in classical music, as you know, and it was always about reading the notes on paper and playing only what was on the paper. And then it was about composing notes to give someone else on a piece of paper. And now it's about playing whatever comes into mind, wrapping it in orchestral sounds, and giving listeners something to hear. Ultimately music is about sound, and the experience of making or hearing sound. We need to change the way musicians are trained. I only became a composer through the process of breaking all the bindings of formal music training. I salute you!! ❤❤❤

    Chris, you know I've always admired your skill and prowess as a musician and a piano player. Every one of your videos and performances speaks for itself, as the blood, sweat and tears of countless years of honing your craft manifests itself into absolutely breathtaking performances and a skill set that few will ever achieve. To pass along tips and thoughts about music, in this case improv, is a true gift to this YT musical community. My friend, you are a living example of what happens when God-given talent meets a tireless work ethic. So very impressive!

    Great explanation of improv, Chris. Almost every lead riff I do on the guitar is improvised, and after doing that for 50 years, I've gotten pretty good at it, as you have on the piano. You are absolutely right about learning different styles of music. I've tried my hand at a little of everything over the years and that made a big difference in the library of music in my head that I have to draw on. Excellent presentation, my friend 👏👏🎹🎹❤❤😄😄

    I heard an interview with Courtney Pine many years ago where he likened improvisation to composing in real time. I've never been sure what to do with that information, but it has probably helped someone.

    • @chrisdurhammusicchannel
      @chrisdurhammusicchannel  Месяц назад +1

      If you compose, I guess it makes sense. Sort of... I think it is just Courtney's way of thinking of it.
      Composing for me means stopping and starting and redoing and searching for exactly the right note and playing things over and over and over and ripping up the manuscript paper and starting over and..., um yeah, to someone somewhere, "composing in real time" makes sense.

    Nice tutorial Chris! Improvising for me is go with the flow: take a quick peep at the mode/scale and go and see where it goes. Wonder if I could play as free as I do when I had lessons and music theory in the past. I always loved improvising. Sometimes I wish I had a beter technique but it is what it is at the moment. I only play one afternoon every two months and don't even practice.
    My biggest influence (as you know) is Frank Zappa; on stage he improvised al his guitar solo's, some are 8 or 9 minutes long and often amazing. How does he get those notes?

    • @chrisdurhammusicchannel
      @chrisdurhammusicchannel  23 дня назад

      Hey Paul!!! Yeah, Zappa was brilliant. I know he was mostly self-taught (one year music college). His fellow musicians say that he read and wrote music, so must have learned a decent amount of theory to write some of the later pieces I heard. I don't think you have to go to college to learn theory, but you have to study what you're trying to learn in a way that helps you learn more about the subject. I was self-taught until I got accepted to music college. If you find something interesting, study it!!!!
