Hi Scott, it's Jacques. Interesting video. We learn something new every day by watching other people's work. As far as banding is concerned, it was a very instructive analysis. I had never thought about it before because when I print my pictures on paper I never had to worry about it. It doesn't show up on my paper prints. But on digital mediums it does because of the compression that sites like RUclips undergo during transcoding. As you suggested I have watched some good videos on how to deal with this and even when they claim that the banding is completely eliminated it still shows up on their videos due again to compression. Anyway, all this to say that I have started to apply the 16 bit format change and some surface blur to eliminate the banding as much as possible. Thanks again for taking the time to analyze our images. It's an exercise that I'm sure will be useful to all of us in future projects. Take care my friend and keep up the good work!

Hi Jacques. Nice to hear from you. I'm glad it was interesting for you. As I said, your work is excellent and I'm really grateful for you submitting your photos. As for the banding, I'm sure your prints look perfect. And that's because you are in complete control of how they look. When you publish a photo digitally you have no control over how bright the viewer's device is. What may look perfect on your screen might not on another, particularly with devices like mobile phones and tablets that are typically brighter than computers and TVs. It's the brightness of the viewer's screen which makes the banding more visible. Social media sites do compress photos but it doesn't tend to affect the banding very much. And don't worry, I've experienced these banding issues with my own work at times. Best wishes, and keep up your excellent work.

Hi Scott, wanted to say thank you for taking the time to review and critique my little Sanderling. I wasn't 100% about the exposure so it's nice to hear it was correct!, I was aware of the negative space but honestly didn't think of cropping it in the way you did. I also want to say thanks for the kind words about the Starling image, laying on the streets of Camden taking that shot got me a lot of odd looks 😂.
Once again thank you and really love the amazing content you produce.

Hi Andy. Thanks again for taking part. You were in Camden for that picture? That's brave! I can imagine some of the reactions you got from people. I get strange comments from people when they see me lying on the ground in the countryside, but Camden must be a whole other level. Great shot.

Hi Scott, thank you so much for the comments of my deer, I have indeed sent you a cropped version of the original by mistake. I completely see the issue with the background now, something I hadn’t thought of before you mentioned it and thank you for the fieldcraft tip, I will try that next time. I look forward to any future opportunities to submit further images.

Having just recently found your site I was very interested to hear you say to do denoise at end of editing as I was told to do it before going into my editing programmes... I use CS6 ( paid for years ago) and Liminar Neo. I have found it works well that way but I must do some testing to see what difference it makes .... l am enjoying your insight and look forward to watching more... many thanks

Hi Brenda. Yes lots of people teach that you should do the noise reduction first, but the problem with that is that if you do anything which introduces more noise - such as raise the exposure - you end up undoing your noise reduction. I always find it better to do it near the end. Thanks for watching.

I wish though that bird photography was less than 99% about making your birds look like, ultra crisp high detailed, smoothed and edited Scarlett Johansson or some model on the cover of a trashy magazine pictures. Too many photographers cross the line by a mile of photo manipulation, to the point that it looks fake, and plastic. Color shifting, adding radial blur patches, massive AI enhancing, removing reflected light casts, over sharpening, and full on background manipulation. I feel like that's photography as a whole now. Copying industry standards with templated which are set up to make money infesting the art space. end of my rant lol.

Your art, your rules. Nobody compels anyone to create their photos in a certain way. As long as you're happy with it and have fun with it, it's all cool.
