I got a chuckle out of your vending machine comment. I have cycled in both Japan and France this year and I remember thinking during PBP how nice it would be to have more vending machines along the route. I could have also used more ice for the heat!
Thank you for your comment! Maybe many Japanese, like me, wished there were more vending machines along the route. But that is Japan's unique situation, hmmm. I heard from a Japanese guy who said he got his ice from a McDonald's drink cup into a bike bottle. Yes, we really needed a lot more ice!
