      Hoss is pretty much out of stock on potatoes =( I got some other seeds from them, but a lot of the seed companies are very low in stock. Bad news if you need seeds, but good news to know so many more people are looking to grow their own food.

    Love you guys and your videos. We grew potatoes in the Ruth Stout method last year...we loved it. Best potato harvest and onion harvest (planted them together) that we ever had....Only 1 word of caution from one Kentucky homestead family to another....it was a snake magnet. Them snakes were even having babies in it. As soon as we realized it, we wouldn’t let our 4 yr old near those beds again. Super easy to harvest, didn’t need much watering, weed control was as easy as tossing on more straw or hay. The plants grew like crazy...we still have about 150 to 200 potatoes left from last season and we are huge potato eaters around here...homemade French fries,fried taters, mashed potatoes, hash browns,baked potatoes and so on. Hope your all have even a better harvest than we did. ❤️ Oh, we did add rabbit poo to every plant. Don’t know if that was the reason for such a huge harvest in the hay or not...but thought I would let you know. Happy gardening.

    I remember back when I was a teenager and we lived on the farm, My Momma and I would sit on the porch and cut potato slips while my Step Dad prepared the ground. We lived in Arkansas and it got hot and humid in the summer, but, whenever it came potato digging time, I loved it, getting down in the dirt and finding the Taters as we called them lol. Good memories. You all stay safe and well. God Bless Y'all.

    I watch you cutting and healing them over and kind of laugh. Growing up my parents grew hundreds of pounds of potatos. Every year we would cut them then put into 5 gallon buckets of water and let soak for a day and then plant in holes with dirt mounted around to pull into plants as they grew. We never had rotting potatos and always got a huge yield. To this day I still do it that way. It's funny how we do what we are taught.
    I've also watched my neighbor start with a tire and mulch as plant grew had add anothervtire and more mulch. Had go 3 high and to harvest had just remove tires.

    I got my potatoes from Hoss this year, too. Greg and Travis are good people! My Adirondack blue potatoes were the first out of the ground in about 9 days. I don't cut mine because I am outside of Chattanooga and we get so much rain, I feel like the whole potatoes protect a little bit against rot. Oak leaves make really good potato mulch if you have those around.

    • @NorthnSouthHomestead
      @NorthnSouthHomestead 4 года назад +1

      We have KY clay...so I feel ya. Lol. We also had land grading work done so our front yard...where we grow our potatoes, has NO top soil. Last yr we used Ruth Stout method to grow potatoes in our front yard...with rabbit poo mixed in the hay. We had hay, and wasn’t willing to pay $6 a bale for straw. Lol. We had an amazing potato and onion harvest from it....also did broccoli,cabbage,and cauliflower same way. They also did great. BUT, this yr we are making compost fast track for the hay beds.....and it’s ready in 14 days. Layer about 4-6 inches of cut grass,hay,cut grass hay...after every layer, lightly spray mixture below on it, then add next layer and sprayer mixture...keep doing it until the pile is about 3 ft tall. Cover with a tarp, turn the pile around 7 days and put tarp back on it. 14 days, it’s fabulous compost ready to use. Mixture: 1 - 12oz can of beer, 1-12oz can of cola, and 8 oz of ammonia into a garden hose sprayer...like those miracle grow sprayers in stores. That’s it, quick, easy,cheap, compost ready to use. It’s called drunken compost. Lol it’s not organic, but if you don’t add anything else to it for 5 yrs...then it will be.
