Living in our own plot of land always gave us hopes and dreams of the possibility we may one day begin growing our own food…today’s the day!
Using corrugated iron sheeting picked up from the scrapyard along with sturdy timber framing these raised beds are big enough for our beginner garden 🌱

Theo and Bee gave up their busy city lifestyles in 2014 to explore alternative living, and have lived in vans and boats since then without looking back! Along with their cat Ginjey Bear they have been driving around the world in their self converted Sprinter van. However, when the global pandemic hit they began converting their abandoned stone barn in Central Portugal to turn into a wonderful tiny stone cottage. Along the way, they have rescued a playful cat called Furrnando and have a wonderful flock of Chickens!

Why, hello Drew and Brit!! Two of my top fave vanlifing couples finally meeting again! 🤗😍
As others have mentioned, I’d recommend filling the bottom of the beds with gravel/pebbles for drainage and skirting the sides a tad to avoid bottoming out. The area would eventually look just gorgeous if you fence it in, maybe add a greenhouse (with all the spare old windows!) and make little pebble paths in between, planting tons of flowers around to attract pollinating insects, medicinal plants and companions like marigolds, datura, nasturtium and comfrey... 🤗🌱🌾🌸🌸

Timber for internals (now also split) will rot in a compost environment and the beds will collapse outwards ... Also, not enough strength to hold the side walls up without centre braces and external braces at least.
Timber would have been better on the outside and maybe some diagonals to brace against the weight ...
Maybe I'm wrong, but time will tell ...

  • @robinmiller1898

Make sure the beds are placed so the vegetables will get the maximum amount of sunlight for growth. You don’t want too much of the day in shade. Also if you can get a section of cattle panel fencing in Portugal it is nice to use arched between 2 beds for growing vining veggies. They are 16 feet long and easily bend into an arch from one raised bed to another. Worth the time to explore the “Portugal equivalent” for cattle panel fencing because there are SOOO many uses for it in the garden. Have fun playing in the dirt Bea!! I love it.

I'm an avid gardener and am eager to see how you folks get on with this phase of the project. One bit of advice I wanted to offer on your raised bed design, however. I think you will find that leaving no reinforcement of the top and bottom of the beds is going to result in a lot of bending and warping of the corrigated iron as you fill it with soil and brush. I'd really recommend running a frame of wood along the top and bottom of each bed and screwing the iron to that as well. It will give your bed the much needed strenght it will need on the top as you lean on the edge to reach your veggies and along the bottom, it will keep the soil from blowing out along the bottom edge where there is nothing but bendy iron to keep the soil back. Soil is HEAVY and even heavier when wet. I would also recommend a brace midway holding the front and back of the bed together on both the top and bottom, to keep the soil from bending out in the middle.
I'm not commenting right after you post, and I would be very surprised if I am the only one who mentions this, but take it from an old, seasoned gardener and reinforce before you get all the stuff loaded into the beds. You will avoid a lot of headache,

Great beds. Remember, 6 - 8 hours of direct sunlight with absolutely no shade if you want fruit like tomatoes, peppers, etc. I'm a little worried about that nice, beautiful but shady patch you choose for your beds. It'll be a huge job to move them after they're filled if you decide that you want to grow more than greens, some of which do ok in the shade. Great video. I'm thinking about a shorter version for my own garden and the tip about which screws to use were great. Thanks.

Raised bed gardening is awesome. I have been doing it for decades. Helpful when you are starting from scratch because you can intentionally build soil in smaller area. Another thing that I don't think I heard Bea mention I the list of advantages is water efficiency. You water intensely and deeply close to the plants, you can plant closer and if you mulch the space between the plants heavily it keeps the roots cool and moist and the worms love, love to eat and live underneath the mulch layer. When first learning about this I researched bio dynamic French intensive. Works like a hot dance! Glad to hear you are considering a ramp. I know you love the tractor but you may find it to be convenient to ge able to take smaller loads of compost to your garden or take produce to the house. Happy me to see happy you guys!!!

I love raised beds. I've got them as well made from wood. Filed them with compost and it's doing great. But... one thing we did not think about and that's water. They dry out so very very fast. We should have an irrigation system when we build them but we didn't. And this summer we went on holiday for 12 weeks and everything died.
We got normal plants combined with vegetables. That looks pretty and in winter you still have a garden.
You are not leaving again soon so water shouldn't be a problem.

From my own personal experience, the raised beds will need a lot of water as gravity has the same affect on raised beds as you have with potted plants. The other problem is the corrugated sides that will get sooo hot in the summer, it’ll dry the raised bed out even quicker and any roots touching the sides will burn, especially in the baking summer sun of Portugal. I would suggest digging the ground out about a 12 inches deep and line it with plastic (not water tight) to hold some moisture in the soil. You could do this with the raised beds, but water will still only collect at the bottom of the bed. I hope this helps

You can make simple wooden skids and drag a 20” container if you can get it reasonably near. You only need the skids at the ‘front’ of the container, a bit like boat bow on each corner so it doesn’t dig in the dirt… they aren’t that heavy and the tractor should manage it… I have slid a container towing with fort lift quite easily on rough concrete, a dirt track should be a breeze.
You could even use telegraph poles to roll it.

I have to protect nightshade plants (tomatoes & peppers) from afternoon sun. Melons & carrots, potatoes don't mind. I'm learning too. Before building kitchen cabinets, Theo needs to make a key rack to hang the keys to all the vehicles & buildings.

Would suggest putting some wooden planks as a capping on the top of your raised beds. Bea may cut herself in the metal while planting and harvesting the veg.

Theo - I live in the Pacific Northwest. Socks with sandals is a pretty common fashion choice. 😁 Bee - Once again, THANK YOU for sharing your struggles with depression. I’ve been struggling with it and it helps to know others are managing it and finding ways to enjoy life. ❤️

Yes I agree with David, you'll be surprised at how much weight will push against the side walls so a support would be best. If the tin is sharp pool noodles cut down one side and slipped on will protect you from getting cut on the edges. But looking good and I'm so glad your back Bee looking beautiful as ever and laughing and seeing the funny side of Theo's antics. Lol Theo glad your protecting yourself whilst using tool and equipment, health and safety first and always is the way to go. The house is looking great! 👌XxKathleen from Scotland

Theo... might I have a word? Several months ago on your long drive to the UK, you started singing "Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz." That one line has been stuck in my head ever since. Thank you for that!! lol true story!
