God girl! Its like you speak from my own soul! I love to write too just for the pure satisfaction of feeling the pen to paper and I've ruined a many of pretty journals because I feel like my handwriting isn't perfect enough...which has been my greatest struggle when it comes to journaling. Thank you for this one! You are always on time with exactly what videos I'm looking for of the moment.

Thank you, Kelly-Ann - that's exactly what I needed! I bought a fresh journal and a new fountain pen and brown ink and all the stuff I used to love to start journaling again. And yet the journal is waiting for me for over a month now. It's funny how one's bursting with ideas and topics to write about and then they suddenly disappear when you get your stationery ready to finally get to it. It is definitely self-sabotage and it's sooo "in my face" it's not even ashamed of being what it is! :)
Oh, and about the fancy journals that we're scared to ruin with mistakes, our ugly handwriting or whatever bullshit it is that makes us turned off... The perspective of buying a less fancy / less expensive journal just to please the weakling inside makes me feel kind of rebelious, hahaha! If you bought a fancy journal in the first place, it's because you loved it so just wreck the hell out of it, ruin it, stain it! It's just a journal and you're not "just" you. Even the craziest and stupidest bullshit deserves to be written in the most loxurious journal, but that's just my opinion ;)
Kelly-Ann, I love the journal prompts you offer. Many of them are so clever, definitely making me want to start journaling. Thank you!

Thank you thank you. Right on time. My guides have been telling me I need to journal. All my life I wanted to keep one but put all the pressures on myself that you described or I didn't know how to start. I literally felt like you were talking directly to me. I even learned that I have been automatic writing for years and never knew it! So eye opening! Thanks bunches! Love & Light to you

Ha! I just yesterday morning rejoined my "morning pages" journaling practice. I'm so glad I did--and I'm so glad you're here today to remind me why I did so! Thanks, as always!

I recommend Gel Pens. They are fun to look at and they, in my opinion, write very nicely. They come in all colors and some sparkle. I can only journal regularly if I have Gel Pens they inspire me somehow. :)

I loved this video probably because it reinforces what I feel about the necessity and value of keeping a journal. I would say that in the past my journalling habit has been a life saver for me. Thank you, Kellyann for yet another insightful video. You are a treasure.

The more I hear about 'automatic writing', the more it sounds like open-eyed meditation - concentration on the writing to the exclusion of the external world; people who use it to get in touch with the divinity and the divine; allowing a flow of words; and, the psychology involved with 'flowing', getting in touch with an inner demon, or inner child. Whew, all one sentence, too!!

I would like to contribute intelligently to this conversation about journaling, but today it would sound inept and illiterate. Let me just say that I was THIS DAMN HAPPY to see a video from you this evening--and one on journaling was just...KAPOW! You have no idea how delightful after a perfectly ridiculous day. Thank you!!

I used to journal a LOT but had to stop about two and a half years ago because my writing became so obsessive and ruminative and dark that it was actually doing more harm than good. Slowly getting back into it now by focusing more on art/collage journaling rather than writing. Sometimes it's not always the best or healthy thing to let your thoughts free rein when you can't control them at a gallop.

Thank you. With my dyslexia using a keyboard just makes so much of a difference. I have been using morning pages as a journaling method for years now and if I did it with pen and paper it would not be as useful and I never would have kept it up.

I used to be just the same about sketch books, that first blank page was a nightmare...........So I ignored it, opened the sketchbook at random and started drawing. Dated it when I finished. So what it's not in date order but it set free my mind. I have done the same with journals. Turn over the first page and just start to write, doodle, note take whatever. It has become a free for all journal everything goes in, even the odd 'Buy some more coffee you dozy woman !!' Free your mind :)

Great video! I've been trying to journal on-and-off for as long as I can remember, and I always seem to get stuck in a creative/expressive rut. Last year I bought a prompt journal called 'Q & A a Day' which is essentially a 5-year journal that asks one question everyday for 5 years. I'm halfway through my first year, and it's honestly the most consistent I've ever been with a journal. Questions range from the mundane -- "What's the softest thing you wore today?" to a bit more thought provoking -- "Write the first sentence of your autobiography." I really like the short-and-sweet format, and for now it's enough to get the creative juices flowing.

I've been journaling since I could hold a pencil, and what you said about getting stuck feeling like you have to write certain events down to remember them is so true. I hate that feeling because it holds me back from writing about the things my spirit really wants to write about. It's always, "There's something I really want to write about, but first I have to record this ..." It's exhausting. I still haven't quite figured out a way to get out of that bind. The struggle. Lol.

    • @kelly-annmaddox

SummerStitchinWitch I think that first of all it's important to understand why you feel the need to record things even when you know that doing so won't be of any use. Is it because of something in your prior conditioning? A message you picked up from a parent or from your school days perhaps? Is it because you are writing your journal for posterity more than as a tool for catharsis and self-expression? Dealing with what's at the bottom of your resistance to dropping rigid record-keeping is important. You can only set yourself free once you know the nature of the cage.
Many people feel that they need to record special/significant events because they have a sense that their journal will be read in the future or that it should reflect the holistic overview of their life so that it's not 'one-sided'. The best thing to do in this case is to firstly perform some kind of ritual to symbolise a new approach to your journaling practice, committing to journaling in the most useful and nurturing way for you and dropping the 'rules' which are holding you back. Then you may also benefit from writing a statement in the front of the journal to qualify it as a space to write what you need to write in the moment for self-exploration. This statement is intended to remind you of your decision to use the journal only for what it is useful for, but it also ensures that you can let go of hang-ups about anyone else reading it in the future. (Some people do have that issue and have benefitted from actually leaving an additional note to request that the journal be burned and not read. It is rare that people actually overlook the written request of a deceased person! Unless they are Courtney Love.)
Thirdly, maybe consider starting some kind of scrapbook which would include ticket stubs, photos, postcards, post-it reminders and whatnot. Scrapbooking is a record-keeping device which is designed for posterity or can be considered as an heirloom to be appreciated long into the future. It is usually not private and contains things to be celebrated or remembered. If you had a project like that for significant life events you might feel less pressure to record them in your more private and personal journaling space. This might give you back some control over your journal whilst also allowing you to find the fun in recording things like marriages, birthdays and such.

I totally agree that using a computer instead of pen and paper is just as good. I used to think it's less valuable, but every time I wanted to write down some of my expriences the words were flowing faster than my hand could write and it got extremely frustrating. I created a Word document with password on it and started writing in that. The password gives it a sense of great security and I can finally write as fast as I need ;) Also I've tried automatic writing some time ago, but I can't seem to get into it... I'd love to try some more, I hope it will get better. Great video! :)

I used to experiment a lot with cutting up texts, first quite literally, using scissors on lines of poetry, that would then be randomly drawn out of a 'top hat' (box actually) and later on with automatic writing. I found myself using it as a sort of meditation technique while waiting for a train or something else. It freed me from the sense of time passing by. I put texts into online translators and translated them into Japanese and back. This completely changed the text, but at the expense the vocabulary, which would get rather limited after multiple translation steps. More recently I found 'dissociated press' which is an interesting cut-up tecnique using a specific algorytm that is supposed to create more or less grammatically correct looking results: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissociated_press
I haven't used that one much, but I can see how it can also contribute to the generation of new ideas.

So many good ideas, thank you so much for this! ♥
I've been on and off journaling for all my life, since I was about oh, nine.. I've lost my first diaries and now and then I find myself searching for them in my dreams. I would love to find them again but I think it's a lost cause.
For everyone who is left-handed and kind of "arty-farty" (like me), I can recommend you to buy drawing pad and use them for your journaling. I think they are great with their lack of lines so if you feel like it, you can put in a little describing doodle or drawing here and there between your notes, if you feel like it.

I really appreciate that. Especially the bit about expensive stationary. I like my paper unbleached and preferably smelling of mild vanilla or similar. My favourite thing to do is trawl the once expensive notebooks in TKmaxx after hunting down any beeswax candles they may have. Thats unless i can find retro enamel posts. :)
Automatic writing scares me a little. I tried with an Angel book but i always start with profanities and putting myself down as if exorcising my inner demons. Any advice on this please as i think Automatic writing would benefit me greatly. Also im thinking of giving up a weekly counsellor i have had for 2 years and a journaling practice would be a great way to continue the counselling as its basically self counselling for me but with putting the power and trust back in my hands.
Now all i have to do is get over procrastination. Im an inspiration Junkie and youtube is my fix.... sometimes. Although its been 8 days now of Yoga and im aiming for a month of uninterrupted practice to form that habit and carve those neural pathways.
Great video, i really appreciate it. Thank you

bilko1971 It is seriously ALL about the journals and notebooks in TKmaxx - OMG!
Well done on trying to form a good yoga habit. Keep going - carve those pathways!

Just a tip. Write one sentence each day about the thing that bothered you the most that day, and one sentence about the thing that made you happiest each day. It's just two sentences, but it certainly doesn't often stop there, at least not for long. :)

I have been journaling for more than 30 years. It's a cathartic process...Used to use nice and shiny journals but as I have accumulated a lot, I dropped the paper version and started the electronic one.
