  • Welcome back to the second video (Part 2) of our course on groundwater flow modeling using MODFLOW and GMS. In this video, we delve into one of the most crucial aspects of groundwater hydrology: groundwater aquifers. Understanding aquifers is key to grasping how groundwater is stored, transmitted, and flows through different geological formations.
Aquifers are porous media or sediments where groundwater is both stored and transmitted. They are essential for drilling wells and extracting groundwater. Aquicludes, like clay, can store water but cannot transmit it, making them impermeable barriers. Aquitards, such as fractured or unfractured rocks, can transmit water but cannot store it effectively.
We further classify aquifers into confined and unconfined aquifers. Confined aquifers are bounded by impermeable layers, creating pressure within the aquifer. This pressure allows water to flow upward when a well is drilled, known as an artesian well. Unconfined aquifers, on the other hand, are only bounded by the water table and require pumps to extract water.
Join us as we explore these fascinating concepts and understand the different types of aquifers, their properties, and their significance in groundwater flow modeling.

Is fractured rock with joint and is capable to hold water is consider as aquifier or aquiclude
