House near Rapidan Dam partially collapses into Blue Earth River in southern Minnesota

- The raging Blue Earth River, which caused an abutment of the 114-year-old Rapidan Dam to partially fail, has now swallowed most of the iconic home that sits on a nearby embankment.

So sad. In a separate article the family said they knew it wasn't going to make it. They said it wouldn't be a case of if but, but a case of when. In the meantime they're hoping a store and pie place they own will survive. It's been in their family since 1910 (the home was in the family for decades as well). Very sad.
I saw the video, I felt bad for the family. The store looks like it's just past the house. So sad.
I hope they were able to get out some of their more personal meaningful possessions before they had to evacuate
yeah both the house and the store were the two remaining original mill buildings before the dam
Their business will probably skyrocket because people tend to support businesses more when bad things happen to them
That's awful, very hard loss for them.

Why? Someone was stupid enough to build a house right on edge of a river. Smart homeowners build their homes or whatever no where near rushing waters. I don’t feel bad for stupid people.

My husband told me it was a 100 year old dam. It needed to be fixed a loooong time ago.

the river was getting so low the barges couldnt get through, its good to see it filling but like everything weather these days its all or nothing, sorry to see the losses.

At this point it's probably just about as expensive to fix the dam because now ypu have to span the space that erosion has opened up so, you'll have to fix the existing portion and add on so, might be cheaper to just take it down.

Cheapest solution might be to establish a new left bank, and let the new falls become a tourist attraction. The dam can just sit there, doing nothing.
Change the store's name to Rapidan Falls Store, and be famous for another couple of generations.

Higher temperatures mean more water in the air, more rain, more flooding. Army Corps of Engineers is making new plans to react to the science, some projects started others lack the funds. To claim they are ready is a political lie unless the job is to just react after the floods, the dams breaking, people evacuating, businesses are flooded or shut down, and or they are replaced or quit their jobs.
