Can we acknowledge the fact that Kelly Clarkson was singing this song with no band at all, just a guittar, a piano and her raw voice! A song that requires so much vocal power and she did with such maestry and finesse. Every time i think, she can´t get better and then she just take to a whole other level. Kelly, YOU ARE A GODDESS.

This song has been sung so many times and so often with the intention of showing off vocals that sometimes the sentimental lyrics are overshadowed by the singer. Kelly's such a powerful vocalist but always makes sure she's telling the story and I love her for it.

That’s actually what is called an intentional crack/intentional break. A ton of singers do this and it makes a song more emotive. It’s most common on words with “h” in them. Notice how she changed “Joy” to “Jo-HO-oh-oy”. Look up “intentional cracks in singing” on RUclips and you won’t be disappointed.
She purposefully did that to switch registers🙄
That crack made it her own iconic moment. It gave her entry into the next octave PLUS the wishing someone joy that caused her so much pain, it did crack her. Kelly sings this with tenderness and just the right amount of embellishment. I guess comparisons to Whitney are unavoidable, but Kelly does justice to the song in her own way.
Sand the song perfectly, while maintaining her own style, not trying to sound like Whitney. Both powerful voices in their own right, Kelly definitely did this song sweet justice.

I've been in love with your voice since episode 5 of the first season on American Idol when she DARED to come out singing a song by Aretha Franklin and smashed it!!!
