  • Design and build of an electric guitar (bit of a 2020 coronavirus project - I wanted to make something no one else would have). I haven't got any fancy luthier tools or a workshop so ended up at the dining table and annoying the neighbours with noisy routing in the garden (sorry, Sue and John...)
    Body is made of sycamore topped with bookmatched tiger wood. The neck is one of those blanks from China (tip: order it about three years in advance as it takes an age to get delivered).
    This represents about 100 hours of work. Mistakes, cut fingers and swearing not included.

    Excellent build and unique... Next time you have to build the neck as well, it is not as scary as it might seem.

      Nice one, ta very much. I'll confess, I've avoided making a neck until now as, you're right, it seems a bit tricky and I haven't got any kind of workshop. I'll try it on the next build though as it would be satisfying to make all the elements from start to finish. Any tips gratefully received.

    I can see that working as a short scale 8 string bass as well

    Amazing job and amazing shape! How many coats of the penetrating oil from Crimson did you use? You end up with a satin look right?

      Thanks mate, much appreciated! I used only four (or five?) coats of the Crimson oil in the end (partly because I wanted to get two guitars out of the bottle). Yeah, the effect is always going to be satin rather than gloss. I'm not sure it would have made much of a difference if I'd have used more? Might layer it up with loads next time though and see what happens.

      @@littleblackdotsmusic2963 maybe, I’m trying to get information about crimson oil because is easier to get here in Spain rather than the Tru
      Oil, I always used Tru Oil, which is from USA, and if you use 3 or 4 coats of Tru Oil you’ll get a satin finish, but if you use 15 you’ll get a mirror gloss (you can check mi video about the Meteora).

      @@juandemartini817 Thanks for the tip. I might see if I can get hold of some if it's capable of making things as shiny as the one you made as it looks excellent. I thought it was only possible to get that finish with lacquer, which I don't really want to mess around with. Will see how it goes...

      @juandemartini817 3 года назад

      @@littleblackdotsmusic2963 but according to crimson you can get a shiny finish if you apply more coats, I believe that the formula of Crimson Oil and Tru Oil must be the same. With 13 coats and a buffing you may get a shiny finish.

      @@juandemartini817 I'll try it. Am building a chambered, semi-hollow design at the moment. I probably just need to be a little less stingy with the oil and lay down a lot more layers.

    Can you help me make one I'm from Iraq and what measurements and what kind of wood they're using and send me a map so I can make one I can.

    • @littleblackdotsmusic2963
      @littleblackdotsmusic2963  3 года назад

      Hello mate. The chunky bit of wood is sycamore, but any hard wood will do (like beech, alder, ash, basswood or maple). The bit I used is 35mm thick. The top is 8mm thick and is a bookmatched piece of tiger wood I bought off eBay (search for "bookmatched guitar wood" - not sure what eBay's like in Iraq, but hopefully you'll get some decent results). As for the guitar measurements, it's a bit of a one-off and so I don't have a template, but if it helps, it's 44cm long and 32cm wide at it's longest/widest parts. You can probably take a screenshot and scale it up to these measurements. If you're looking for existing guitar templates though, check out: www.electricherald.com/guitar-templates/ These have all the designs and measurements you'll need. Good luck!
