I understand that there are other insanely talented wr's with much better careers. But to me, Calvin Johnson is the best wr that football has ever had.
Even if we only looking at only players from 2000-present he's not better than Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Smith, Antonio Brown, Tyreek Hill or Julio Jones. Nevermind the true GOATs Rice and Owens
@@tatertots0046 The only WRs on that list that have an argument are Rice, Owens, Fitz, and Jones. That said, Megatron was still a better WR than all of them in terms of talent and dominance. I'll tell you why, but first, let's address the receivers. 1. Rice has gone down as the most successful WR in NFL history. This is thanks, in part, due to the fact that he played with Joe Montana and Steve Young for the majority of his career. He also had Jeff Garcia in Garcia's heyday. Rice's best seasons were with those QBs. He was never a physically dominant WR like Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson. He wasn't known for world-class size, speed, or strength. Rice got by with above-average speed, decent size, and superior route-running and savvy. This is why he was the first NFL WR to play effectively into his forties. Once his speed left him, it didn't matter as much as it would to a physically dominant WR like Moss or Johnson, because he relied on footwork and route-running to get open rather than just running by a guy. 2. Larry Fitzgerald is basically a bigger, slower version of Jerry Rice. Both WRs were able to play a long time for similar reasons. Funnily enough, Larry's old teammate, Anquan Boldin, was able to eke out a long career in the NFL for similar reasons, though he was never as athletically gifted as Larry or Rice. Anyway, neither Rice nor Fitz were the physically dominant WRs who would run a fly route and beat routinely whoever was guarding them, even if it was a speedy CB like Darrelle Revis or Patrick Peterson. They didn't have the straight-line speed for that. They excelled in misdirection, footwork, route-running, and general football savvy, which is why both of them played longer than most NFL WRs. For that reason, these are the only two WRs on this list I would put anywhere close to Megatron's level. 3. Julio Jones and Terrell Owens are the only physically dominant WRs on this list that actually threatens Calvin. But even Jones falls short, pun intended. Jones was a bit faster than Calvin in his prime, but he's also quite a bit shorter as well, which explains that. Jones was never so physically dominant though, that other teams would line up two CBs against him in press man at the goal-line, kinda like punt return gunners. In fact, Megatron is the only WR I've ever seen require that sort of coverage. I've never seen Jones put that kind of fear into an opposing defensive coordinator. Owens also never put that kind of fear into opposing DCs. Speaking of Owens, he was big and fast, but inconsistent through much of his career. It was mind-boggling how he'd make some circus catch and then drop an easy catch. Owens might have been physically more gifted, maybe, but he wasn't better than Megatron. 4. Steve Smith, Antonio Brown, and Tyreek Hill are lumped together because they're the same kind of WRs, short, speedy, run by the defender types. They just don't compare to Megatron. Heck, Megatron was just as fast as some of these guys and he had a 5+ inch height advantage over them. Sure, these guys are/were great in their own way, but none of these guys ever matched the level of dominance that Calvin displayed. Answer me this: Out of all these guys you listed, which ones have you ever seen go up over three defenders and come down with the ball in the endzone for a TD, not once, but twice? Please provide video evidence to support your claim.
@@james_ford86 lol you don't know football. What made JERRY Rice the GOAT is what he did with the ball in his hands he was impossible to tackle in the open field. Not any of the shit you're talking about. Jerry Rice was the master of catching the 4 yard pass breaking a tackle and getting the 1st down or touchdown. He could do that with ANY quarterback Calvin Johnson's problem is that he HAD to jump over 3 people because he was stiff and had trouble getting open. Steve Smith, Antonio Brown and Tyreek Hill are superior because they can get open with ease and dont have to jump over people. Steve Smith is also way more physical than Calvin Johnson
@@tatertots0046 I can tell you really never watched Calvin Johnson, game after game, year after year, like I did, or you wouldn't be saying he "was stiff and had trouble getting open." Sure, the first couple seasons, he was stiff, as evidenced by him getting shut down by Darelle Revis. But, as he got older, his route-running improved immensely and he was beating the brakes off opposing DBs for years to come. 2011 marked the turning point in Megatron's career in that regard. Also, I never said Jerry wasn't shifty or hard to tackle. I said that he didn't have world-class size or speed, which HE DIDN'T. Jerry's route-running, footwork (which, by the way, is how players are able to be shifty), and overall savvy are what led to him having such a long and successful career. But you can't tell me that having Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jeff Garcia for the majority of his career didn't help him. You'd have to be an idiot to believe otherwise. One more thing: Calvin had to jump over 3 people not because he "had trouble getting open," but because opposing defensive coordinators were so worried about him that they would double and triple cover him on every play. This was thanks, in part, to the Lions having no reliable #2 or #3 WRs to make opposing defenses pay for that for the majority of Calvin's career. It wasn't until the twilight of Megatron's career in Detroit that they finally got a legit #2 WR in Golden Tate. By then, Megatron's body was so beat up from years of abuse that he couldn't take it anymore on top of the losing. I'm afraid it's you who really doesn't know what you're talking about.
Calvin Johnson was rewarded for his playmaking abilities this year (2021) by induction into the NFL Hall Of Fame. His acceptance speech is inspirational, awesome and revealing. Never could tell that the man was playing most of his career with severe back pain. It's players like Calvin "Megatron" Johnson that make me proud to be a fan of the NFL and the Lions.
Rewatching all these Calvin Johnson clips reminds me of what made him so great: He would do the impossible and make it look effortless. Like if you or I or any average Joe tried to reenact any of these plays we would never be able to pull it off once. Yet he can make these incredible cuts, catches and runs and look like he's done it a billion times before. Megatron was the definition of smooth.
I’m old enough and smart enough now to know that when it comes to eras of the game it really can be difficult to distinguish who is the GOAT at any one position in sports, but Megatron is up there in the conversation. Rice, Megatron, Moss…no particular order.
Hard to believe that Detroit had to of the best players to ever play the game, and yet just could not put together a winning team for more than 1-2 years. Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders. And to think that the two of them never held the franchise for ransom to get massive salaries or to be traded to super bowl contending teams. They were truly team players, and were committed to the team that drafted them.
I'm a lifelong Bengals fan, and I remember thinking that we had EASILY the best receiver in the league with AJ Green... then I watched the game against the Lions at 15:30. Needless to say I saw the greatness of Megatron firsthand on that day. Absolute monster of a player: a physical specimen with the finesse to make unbelievable things happen.
I named my son after this man. CJ would've broke every record in the league if he would've continued his dominance. I respect him for retiring to preserve his health. CJ, you're a great man!
Hearing Calvin was going to retire was genuinely sad news, only other athlete to have that impact on me was Pavel Datsyuk. Two Detroit sports legends who made thier craft look easy at times but always appeared to be humble.
I’m St. Louis fan, so it’s almost blasphemous for me to say this, but the magic man and megatron are my two all time favorite athletes. They were both to skilled and to humble to hate!
Just imagine if he played for a good team!! Dude was sooooooooo good and extremely fun to watch. Thank you Mr. Johnson for entertaining us for so many years!
It happened twice. As a Lions fan highlight reels like this one and reels of Barry Sanders makes me cry. Detroit has not once but twice had the best football player in the league and still couldn't make it to the super bowl. Maybe with this new Brad Holmes/ Dan Campbell regime they'll make it to the super bowl as a team. Go Lions! Just wish they could've done it with Barry and Calvin.
As an outsider looking in it seem yall need a new front office that can find a good coach. Everyone has talent in the league. Coaching makes all the difference. Imagine mahommes on the Texans and Watson on the chiefs. I think the results would be similar.
Id build a team around Calvin Johnson over any other player. Doesn't matter the QB, throw it up and his hands find it. I'll never forget the game against the Eagles where he crushed defense, they couldn't play deep enough.
I love Matthew Stanford, dude is such a nice, calm, person, and when he said “if you were any good, you’d score, but” to megatron I about fell out 😂😂😂😂
What a monster. Something amazing about a receiver who gives everything to catch the ball. Then his running w such determination, he was hard to believe.
I remember hearing the news that Megatron retired and I was saddened. He was once in a generational player and every play he made deserved to be on the highlight reel
Lifelong Lions fan here. Love Calvin and those Stafford years had some fun times. Really amazing player. BUT, I'm gonna be a contrarian here. The difference between Calvin and someone like Jerry Rice or T.O. or Randy Moss or even a Lynn Swann, is Calvin would frequently disappear in clutch moments. He'd have inexplicable drops on relatively easy passes. When the Lions needed a big play in crucial regular season and playoffs you couldn't count on him. It was frustrating as dude had all the tools and just a good guy but for whatever reason he wasn't clutch.
If he played at least 2-3 more season he would be in the conversation as the best WR of all time. Especially if he played on a better team. What a beast.

He could do that with ANY quarterback
Calvin Johnson's problem is that he HAD to jump over 3 people because he was stiff and had trouble getting open.
I'm afraid it's you who really doesn't know what you're talking about.
one of the greatest players to ever grace this game. thank you, calvin!
The greatest receiver of all time, no disrespect to anyone before or after...unstoppable!!!
Calvin Johnson was so good. Glad he at least made it to the Hall of Fame.
wym "at least"? lol it's the hall of fame
@@maxkax9241 because he could’ve been the greatest receiver of all time had he been on a decent team. He might even still have been playing right now
Never realized how hard he fell and the shots he took. I can see how the injuries affected him, yet he still balled out. #legend
He admitted the losing and the whole Ford family BS was a bigger part of it recently
My favorite receiver of all time. But damn, these highlights really showing how talented Matt Stafford is. Arm talent always been crazy lol.
Will never forget watching him live at Ford Field. Most gifted receiver of all time.
What are you doing with my profile pic?
I remember watching him catch a TD in triple coverage in the endzone against Dallas and just thought wow this guy is un coverable.
That’s the one everyone points to, but look at the catch against the Chargers. Over like, 6 guys and still came down with it
Rewatching all these Calvin Johnson clips reminds me of what made him so great: He would do the impossible and make it look effortless. Like if you or I or any average Joe tried to reenact any of these plays we would never be able to pull it off once. Yet he can make these incredible cuts, catches and runs and look like he's done it a billion times before. Megatron was the definition of smooth.
His clips are honestly not that impressive. He was a top WR for sure.
Amazing he played for an 0-16 2008 Lions and never left Detroit. Instead, he retired. Much respect for Calvin Johnson an underrated player and person.
Stafford and Calvin is the true saying "he over there somewhere." 😂😂😂
*Damn, Megatron Was An ABSOLUTE BEAST!!*
*What a GR8 Highlight Reel of The 1 They Called Megatron*

I'm a lifelong Bengals fan, and I remember thinking that we had EASILY the best receiver in the league with AJ Green... then I watched the game against the Lions at 15:30. Needless to say I saw the greatness of Megatron firsthand on that day. Absolute monster of a player: a physical specimen with the finesse to make unbelievable things happen.
I was at that game live and I literally remember the entire stadium just in disbelief of what happened
U can Literally See Him Play Through Pain On Some Plays . Amazing Player Salute Megatron!
Even as a bears fan, I hated him, but I respected him so much

As a lions fan i grew up watching this man, definitely my favourite receiver of all time and its great to see he made the hall of fame.

I think it was the first pass they showed from stafford to Calvin I was like hot damn that was an effortless bullet
Let's also remember that these throws aren't there if he doesn't have Calvin.

It's like watching a man amongst boys, yet these are some of the most physically gifted and athletic humans on the planet. Unreal...
I’d love to see one of these for Tim Brown. One of the greatest receivers of all time who people seem to underrate these days.
Yes, I have seen a lot of comments sections and not a single one talks about Tim Brown

For sure, he started his career slow but after his 4th season or so he was one of best receivers every year! Returned kicks for alot of yards too!

He got double teamed in a press formation on the goal line megatron was a beast
Id build a team around Calvin Johnson over any other player. Doesn't matter the QB, throw it up and his hands find it. I'll never forget the game against the Eagles where he crushed defense, they couldn't play deep enough.
I used to love the Prime Dez Bryant Vs Prime Calvin Johnson. Always a great matchup

What a monster. Something amazing about a receiver who gives everything to catch the ball. Then his running w such determination, he was hard to believe.

Lions robbed him of his talent, like they robbed Stafford’s shoulder.
