These high note screams are exactly what is missing from Jeff Martin's voice nowadays. That's natural of course after 20+ years of performing (and his voice is still in great shape), but those screams he was pulling of back then were GODLIKE! Best example would be "Alarum" from Transmission, the chorus on that one is easily one of the best vocal perfomances ever. Scary vocal range.
Rag eN the thing is, he was never able to pull off that singing live. even back in 1997, they never played "Alarum" or "Gyroscope". they lowered the key of "Army Ants" to accommodate the singing. the highest note that he used to pull off live was the Bb "JEsus" in "Sun going down".
Coldacre actually they did play Allarum several times.....but the singing wasnt as intense as the record.....prob why they stopped playing it live then...musically they are always great tho...the singing is still good...even if it isnt album accurate.
Alarum was perfomed several times during the Transmission tour, they just brought it in the setlist late in the tour. They stopped playing it because Martin couldn't sing the chorus like in the album,he was singing the chorus an octave lower and it didn't sound right in terms of dynamics. The chorus didn't "explode" as it should.
He gets cut off because the percussionist is showing instruments and the singer says music should embrace other cultures or else they seem occultist? Goodness me SMH. I don't know now if that was considered "cultural appropriation" or they were just too "inclusive" for the 90s. Sure that album sold well though.
Love how Jeff Burrows is just wailing away on the drum, and then they all join in on the drums at the end.
