- Autumn Time is when bass do not care what type of lure is put in front of them. This is where the term junk fishing comes from. No paten to the specific lure you are using during you bass fishing.
It's that time of the year again where we in South Africa are slowly going into our winter period. We have a small period before winter which is call autumn and this is where bass will feed before there long hibernation stage before spring.
The bass during autumn will feed on any kind of lure which are presented nicely in front of there faces. Autumn bass fishing is the best time for junk fishing. You can throw a crank bait to dropshot and still catch bass.
Bass will hang shallower in the autumn period and this is because in this time all type of forage will be up shallow on other forage for the upcoming winter months.
You can also catch bass deep that are already moving deeping into there winter homes. So don't be scared to cast a bit deeper into the middle of the lake.

Hi Sascha! I recently went fishing again after ages when I spent a weekend away at Klein Kariba in Bela Bela with my girlfriend. For the weekend, using borrowed gear, I caught one black Bass, smaller than my palm - but even still, I'm the one who really got hooked again! I used to fish a lot at the sea back when I lived in Durban but hardly go down there now and even if I do, one has to travel pretty far out to fish away from the city hubs where the water is extremely polluted. I did fish for bass, carp and barbel before a few years ago when I lived in the Vaal but currently I have no gear of my own and I figured I want to get myself a bass setup to do some fishing in and around GP as it's something I really love and miss a lot. After discovering your channel (following this newly rekindled love for bass fishing) I have been combing the tackle stores and also checking out your vids for some guidance on what kind of setup I should get. I really like the flipping and pitching setup you have and that looks like a fun way to fish....but then I'm also itching to get some gear and go try and hook some fish...and not sure if that's the best way to go right before winter...been trying to watch more of your videos on winter fishing to see what baits you would typically use and match a rod reel and line to those baits for winter...I would probably get a second set up within the next year. Budget for rod+reel+line+lures I'm aiming for under R3.5k. Main locations I'm aiming to fish would be Dowerglen Dam, Edenvale Quarry and maybe also GNU Valley and Emmarentia Dam. Bank fishing only. Any recommendations/suggestions?
Howzit going dude.
That is so awesome that you found your love for bass fishing again. The itch to get into the sport is something you just can't explain. I'm glad you chose my channel as a learning platform to get back into the sport.......Thank you very much for supporting me. So winter fishing is a really touch time to catch bass, but it isn't impossible. Winter fishing is all about patients and sticking it out get that bass to bite. In my opinion winter fishing is the time to focus on slower presentation (Finesse Presentations) and just dialling in your skills on the finesse side. In all honesty you catch bass in with any presentation of lure. It is all about how present it in the water.
When it comes to gear, I can recommend a 7.3 Medium Heavy rod (baitcasting ) This set up will be able to do multiple different styles of fishing. If you are going to get a second fishing rod I can highly recommend you get yourself a spinning set up. 7 Medium (Spinning) thisset up will be able to fish all your smaller presentations like, Drop Shots, Ned Rigs, Neko Rigs and Wacky rigs. All these finesse presentations work great in the winter months.
If your looking to purchase fishing gear? check out Tackle Cabins website. They have a great amount of gear that will suit your needs. Good thing is they deliver all around the country and if you are in the area you can pop into there store.
If you happen to go to the store speak to Rob and he will get you ready to fish in no time.
