    Graphic artist here. What it look like what happened with the decals is that there is a keyline (black outline) to the letters. How you make these in a vector art app is to give the lettering several outlines of differing thicknesses. You layer them so that the widest is at the bottom and the others are stacked in size order. What it looks like is that the graphic artist who produced the decals has accidently sent the black layer to the bottom of the stack so that the largest, base white outline covers it. Then all you have is a solid mass of white surrounding the usual edges of the letters, giving them that 'blobby' look.

    • @aztekdummy
      @aztekdummy  19 дней назад +1

      @@owenrichards1418 there's no black layer. What it looks like to me is that the actual letters and numbers have an outline that they shouldn't and when they scaled them down, the outline didn't scale to fit, so it filled in the space between the letter and the proper pinstripe that surrounds the letter

      @@owenrichards1418 I meant there was no black in the registry decals. 30 year graphic artist here too.

    When Lou described the engineering hull and nacelles as a sled, something clicked and I remembered how I'd read another fan's description of the Vulcan Shuttle (ST:TMP) as a "Faster-Than-Light (FTL) sled" carrying a conventionally-driven crew compartment. That concept is continued and developed in the form of USS Cerritos.
    Regards,
    Kev

    Fantastic work! This definitely looks like a very tricky model to light with what little space you have to work with. But lighting up those saucer rim windows feels like a must to me, and I don't think I'd be satisfied with just painting them on.

    It looks great, Lou! Looking forward to the later version(s) you build. For those red and green marker lights on the saucer, would it be possible to drill them out and replace them at the end with Micro Kristal Klear and then paint transparent red and green once dried?

  • @spacedock873
    @spacedock873 19 дней назад

    A really nice result Lou 👍. Particularly so for a first crack at a new kit. The warp engines look particularly good. It is indeed odd that the registry is behind the bridge - it means that the front bridge light has nothing to highlight 🤔. I know what you mean about larger scales - they are easier to work on and light but they take up so much space! After watching Star Trek TMP (yet again!) I have an inclination to build a "Refit" but the 350 is too big and is notorious for issues and the 1000 is too small to light properly. The 537 would be an ideal scale but that kit is over 40 years old and has countless problems of its own. I feel that the modelling community deserves a completely new, high quality and accurate"Refit" in 537 scale after all this time. It must be at least as popular as the Cerritos.

    Great build Lou! And I agree, we need bigger models from Round2. They should quit putting out new 1:1400 scale ships and make them 1:1000. At that size they are also still managable for home display for most people.

  • @slighter
    @slighter 18 дней назад

    Love to see this build of yours, as I am patiently waiting for my own kit to arrive. Are you planning to offer a masking kit for it for the aztecing by any chance? Since you seem to have the pennants as masking already, this sounds like the proper next step.

    • @aztekdummy
      @aztekdummy  18 дней назад

      I'm mulling the idea of offering two sets. One that is masking for the stripes and light blocking and another that is just a texture pattern set. putting them all together might make the price impractical

    • @slighter
      @slighter 18 дней назад

      @@aztekdummy Two sets also sounds good to me. Would you make the aztec resemble the actual patterns on the hull shown in the show, by any chance?

    • @aztekdummy
      @aztekdummy  18 дней назад

      @slighter no. I don't believe it was consistent anyway. If that's what you want, get the wallpaper decals.

    And the biggest question of them all (might have been answered already, but I didn't find it):
    Will you grace us with a set of your paint masks in CultTVman's shop?
    Really don't want to use the decals for the colour markings, and I don't think masking tape and circle cutter are going to cut it (pun not intended) on this one.

    • @aztekdummy
      @aztekdummy  18 дней назад +1

      No, that's not what they show at all. There's a scene where they show some Klingons regressing to an earlier evolutionary state, and it's the design they used in Discovery, which really cements Discovery as Canon.
