The mark you pointed out atop the viewing port was a direct hit from a shell then the fragments gouging out a splash like scar in the metal. A testament to the violence that visited this area.
I first came to Verdun in 1970. I said to my girlfriend "this is a place you should bring your children" - I still think so. And in 1994 I came with my son. A frightening place.
I have been there, and yes, it is literally frightening.there is something weird, almost malevolent about the woods that have grown up on the land after the battle. I was there on a grey misty morning.....
@@danbernstein4694 I was there on Christmas Eve and Christmas, and my rental car's obstacle detector was set off by things I could not see, right in front of Fleury and on the road between Fort Vaux and Fort Douaumont.
Not all that informative, the narrator doesn’t seem to be all that knowledgeable about either the battle nor the fort itself. The bayonet trench is just a myth, and most of the bayonets were stolen a long time ago, not worth visiting. That said, the fort, and the others nearby are quite amazing, and the entire area is astonishing, the devastation just unimaginable.
The trench of bayonets is worth visiting. Quite eerie.

Very well done, thank you!
Thanks for the video. By the way at 9:55 the odd marking looks like splash damage maybe from a mortar or other artillery.
It's a twin machine gun turret at 6:20.

Pete Kernow You are right sir. And you can only understand that point after you visited the site personally.

At 06:38 .....the helmet of Darth Vador !!!!
Was there anything to see at Mort-Homme, besides the memorial? I believe they attempted to reforest it.
I was there in 2011 and it was all wooded.
I often wonder how these First World War areas were affected by events during the Second World War.
pill boxes evrywhere
.
¿ A quién le importa el memorial a los judíos, fue una batalla entre franceses y alemanes? !!!!!!!!
