If anybody wants to play this properly the way Neil Young does it, you need to re-tune both you high and low E strings down to D. In other words, double drop D.
Two of my buddies and I did this song at our University, back in 1972, when SWOSU, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, had a Follies Competition. Did down by the River & Southern Man. I had only begin playing guitar a couple of months before and it was quite the experience for me, but we played nothing in the league you do back then. Love your version. Thank you for posting!
