  • “Casing drilling” is a drilling method where the casing is used as a drill string and a drillable drill shoe is used instead of a conventional drill bit.
In conventional drilling, you drill with a drill bit, stabilisers, drill collars, and drill pipe down to a planned depth. After that you must extract the whole drill assembly again. In casing drilling, we drill through this section with a drill shoe.

Nice to see the experience of Petrom in Romania with DwC is being exported by OMV. Go DwC!

Is it possible for CwD to perform directional drilling?

How is the drill shoe changed when drilling w/ casing. if the casing has to go a size smaller every time a drill shoes needs to be replaced I don't see much benefit because you still do not have a monowall well. It is faster than having to trip pipe to run casing, but the well still does telescope down in cross section with depth. Does the casing walls need to be thicker so it can withstand the torque of drilling and not twist up. How does this change the cementing program?

      Dear epistte,
      regarding your questions:
      - „How is the drill shoe changed when drilling w/ casing. if the casing has to go a size smaller every time a drill shoes needs to be replaced I don't see much benefit because you still do not have a monowall well. It is faster than having to trip pipe to run casing, but the well still does telescope down in cross section with depth": It is not changed. Once total depth is reached, the casing shoe will remain in the well and cemented. Later in process it will be drilled through by a smaller bit
      - "Does the casing walls need to be thicker so it can withstand the torque of drilling and not twist up.": The wall thickness of casing is not the problem when it comes to torque. However a special type of connection has to be selected.
      - "How does this change the cementing program?“: There is no changes apart from cement volumes
We hope your questions are clarified.

What are the challenges to drill with casing?

    • @omv
      @omv  4 года назад +5

Hello! The biggest challenge is the selection of the right well candidate. The formation to be drilled must allow to reach TD in one run. Gravel and hard, consolidated formations, which easily destroy the cuttings of a drill shoe are certainly not right environment to use casing drilling. One should have a clear picture of formations to be drilled i.e. application mostly in production wells.
Other challenges are the selection of the casing connection with regards to torque, hydraulics during drilling and cementing (especially with low fracture gradient), surface equipment used, vicinity to other wells with regards to directional control (depending on the level of casing drilling used) and formation evaluation requirements.

Do you see any pack-off or stuck since the annular volume is much smaller? How about the ROP of casing drilling compared to conventional BHA, is it alot slower?

      Hello thettin684,
We don’t see any pack-off or stuck pipe during drilling and the ROP is in the range of conventional BHA. However, the candidates have to be selected carefully.

what if you stuck while drilling ??!

    • @omv

In principle we follow the same procedures we apply in conventional drilling operations (circulation, rotation, overpull, mudweight, ... - depending on the stuck pipe mechanism). The only difference is that no drilling jar can be employed. If it really happens, that the case stucks, it would have to be set early.
