  • Built in a day. A great little kit, even for such an old one.

You've captured the demarcation between the dk earth and dk green perfectly for the scale. Very well done!
I made this kit way back in 1973 not long after its release. Airfix's releases in the early to mid 70s were really very nice.
That cylindrical component that is positioned on the aft decking is for a life raft that all USN a/c had. British, Dutch and Finnish versions ommitted this to save weight.
    A lovely job.

Wow, I built the Matchbox version back in 1978 when I was 13. Mine had the black and white underside, from memory.

I like the build, well done... I love this little kit...I still have it in stash in several packaging versions and I still find it hard to leave it be when I encounter it on modellers fairs

Made revells...matchboxs....tamiyas....fujimis....but airfix was my first love, devouring those fantastic pics in airfix catalogues with wild imaginations, with battle of britain, the longest day, a bridge too far guns of navarone as references. Made my brewster buffalo 1/72 some 15 years ago.

Use White tack its much better as blue tack has a tendency to leave a oily residue .

Nice build and great video, tempted to buy one myself. A few comments - there are parts that I don’t think would be relevant for the RAF version, the gunsight in the canopy the tea urn / life raft behind the seat, and the arrester hook (in fact I think the tail cone would have be slightly different, more tapered to a point because there was no need for hole for the arrester hook). I also think that the interior green called out by Airfix is wrong and should be the lighter RAF cockpit green.

Personally I use a spray matt grey primer coat out a can before painting, I find that it helps a lot.

I would, but cans are too powerful. Dust everywhere. Maybe once I get a booth though.

The "gun" on the American nose is an optical gunsight and the "tea urn" is, I believe, a tube containing a life raft which may only be fitted to USN versions, I'm not sure.. A nice little result you have from that kit. White Tac better than Blue as it is less oily.

Great result, have always brush painted but am seriously considering getting an airbrush. Any tips? Which airbrush do you use and have you had to invest in an extractor and airbrush booth?

    • @nostalgicplastic4323
      @nostalgicplastic4323  Год назад +1

I'm very much an airbrush novice but I did a video about the one I got. ruclips.net/video/5I3cIfGjQLY/видео.html
I'm not planning to upgrade, I like it. Simple, reliable and cheap. I had an unbranded one first but it was rubbish. Maybe the expensive ones the big boys have are better, but I'm content. No booth yet, just a cardboard box and a mask. I find acrylic paint is OK, but solvents are horrible for fumes. I've only got solvent primer so I plan things so I can quickly prime, then leave the room. Cheers

Nice material, but it's not a waste of energy or even electricity by using old Airfix?

If you wash all the parts in tepid water with a touch of washing up liquid, it removes any oily 'mould release agent' that might be on the plastic, which can stop paint and cement adhering. Rinse off, and let air dry - I leave them overnight, usually.
Priming the parts, with Halford's (#notspon) Acrylic primer (a big tin will last you ages), will help the paint finish no end - it will also reveal any sink marks, etc, in the plastic.

      Cheers Brian.
I heard somewhere that the oily stuff isn't used anymore, so new kits should be OK, but maybe not. I used to use Halfords primer, but without a spray booth, the dust and smell goes everywhere.
I like Mr Hobby airbrush primers, but they stink too. If I could find a nice acrylic primer I would be happy. Tried vallejo but too sticky and slow to cure.

@@nostalgicplastic4323 Do mean mean Mr Hobby Aqueous Mr Surfacer, or the regular Mr Surfacer. The latter is lacquer and really smelly, but Aqueous Mr Surfacer is alcohol based, and not that stinky, it dries quick too. I have a spray booth, so I have used mostly the lacquer version, but the alcohol based is very good too. It's more expensive though. If you want to try a real water-based primer with no smell at all, there's Stynylrez. It's is also re-bottled by UMP and Ammo. Very good adhesion and dries fast, self levels quite nicely.

Cheers Kinksfan. Its the smelly stuff I'm using, having bought it without realising. I really like it though, just my lungs object to it. I'll try your suggestions out as a primer I don't have to run away from would be handy! Thanks!
