You know what they sound like? Our busses from our childhood! Watch Forrest Gump and listen to the two school busses they use in the movie. This is what I remember our busses sounding like.

I think its because these engines are very similar to the engines used in those old buses. Cast iron block, I believe cast heads, pushrod v8

But are you also sure you weren’t hearing a Detroit Diesel? As a two stroke it sounds higher rpm like a gas engine
