Thank you! I'd been thinking about this one for a while. An Imperial Dignitary would make a pretty good Emperor! That's one figure that I've never owned.
I used the Rascal Robots as extra droids, too! I'm still looking for replacements for them as they were lost long ago. I never had R2 or C3PO, so I had to use R5-D4 & the Death Star Droid as stand-ins. I also used toothpicks as replacement lightsabers (one of the Darth Vaders in my collection has one in honor of this :) ).
I got a little obsessed with Rocky 2. For a while my Lando was an Apollo Creed figure. It really comes to full circle seeing Carl Weathers in Mandalorian.
Both Battlestar Galactica and Flash Gordon were knee jerk reactions from Mattel trying to cut into that massive Star Wars money machine. Both lines fit in so well with the Star Wars line.In addition the Tomland Starroid Raiders were excellent figures to mix in with Star Wars. I just want to go on record and say the Adventure People line was the most versatile toyline of the 70s and 80s.Those figures filled out so many toylines.
I definitely relate to this video. I actually used my Luke Jedi figure as The Emperor until the Emperor figure came out in 1984. Also, as mentioned in the video, we were confused by the goggles on Luke X-Wing and decided it was Han (not Wedge) in X-Wing gear, because it looked like brown hair. I didn’t have Micronsauts or Battlestar G figs but my friends did. We mixed them some times, also we used a friend’s Space 1999 ship as the Tantive IV. I had some Fisher Price “Adventure People” sets - a boat one and a safari one - I loved using the cages from the safari one to be cells for captured Star Wars figures. I also remember being obsessed with The Great Muppet Caper film when I was 8, and I used Greedo, Chewbacca and Snaggletooth as Kermit, Fozzie and Gonzo.
Oh man! Greedo, Chewbacca, and Snaggletooth as Kermit, Fozzie, and Gonzo is brilliant!!! :) I can definitely see the X-Wing pilot being Han now that you mention it. My Adventure People were my go-to stand-ins for so many figures and vehicles over the years. Luke traveled in their green and white boat quite a bit before I had any Star Wars vehicles.
The Rascal Robots ls were a good way to fill out the ranks of the droid pool. And they would sound frustrated when they wound down. Good choice on Charon!
You mentioned the Battlestar Galactica line, so I actually used Admiral Adama believe it or not as my stand in for Grand Moff Tarkin, eventhough he was in a blue outfit, it was still kind of Imperial looking and his head and face sculpt was close enough for a stand in. Other possible stand ins for Tarkin could also be the Buck Rogers in the 25th century line, Dr Huer. I also used the maroon robots from the Black Hole figures to stand in as Stormtroopers, I know that's pushing it. You know those mindless maroon robot Android's from the Black Hole. And I used some of the other Black hole figures as Rebel officers at Hoth Echo Base.
I can see it! As a kid, some of the details didn't really matter. When we didn't have figures for the characters we wanted, we picked up another figure and moved on...but it was awesome awesome to get that one figure you'd been wanted after seeing it on the back of the package! :)
My favorite stand-in toys for Star Wars characters were the Tomy Rascal wind-up robots. Them and the Fisher Price Adventure People were the action figures that I had before I'd seen Star Wars, so I used them a lot even once I had a few Star Wars figures. The Tomy Rascal robot worked great for R2D2 to go with my C3PO (the first Star Wars figure that I got as a kid). I didn't get an R2D2 for months after I got C3PO. The bounty hunters, 2-1B and FX-7 were awesome to me as a kid. I wanted them as soon as I saw them on shelves. I got them as soon as I could. I pretended that the Fisher Price Adventure People's pontoon boat could float like the Land Speeders could so I used it for a lot of Star Wars adventures. It was great for that because it could hold several figures at once either sitting down or standing up. After I saw Return of the Jedi, it was a great stand-in for one of the smaller Sand Skiffs. Good point about Wedge Antilles. I thought he was pretty cool too.
I love this idea! It reminds me of when I made my own AT-AT out of Pepsi boxes and baseball cards since I couldn't afford the real thing. Using different lines is a great way to flesh out some of those dioramas people make.
When I bought my first two Star Wars figures I chose the storm trooper and death squad commander because I thought the latter was actually one of the rebel soldiers fighting the storm troopers in the opening scene and I wanted to recreate that battle.
Yes, great, great video! Although I didn't substitute other figure lines for missing Star Wars characters I definitely threw them all into the mix in a shared Universe. Micronauts, Battlestar Galactica, Black Hole, Buck Rogers and even GI JOE eventually somehow. I had that exact Rascal Robot (still do) and he was well used as additional astromech droid. In particular, the Fisher Price Adventure People space figures; X-Ray Man & Woman, Clawtron and Brainoid were a staple of my play, with the latter two used as additional bounty hunters. I was an action figure addict so I have to admit that things got kinda silly once I added in Love Boat, MASH and Dukes of Hazzard figures to the party. (Btw, are you familiar with Empire Toy Works on Instagram and Facebook, if not check out his toy photography, it's the closest I've seen to what I was attempting to do with my toy multiverse as a kid, but easily 100 times better.)
I didn't have the space Adventure People as a kid, but they DEFINITELY would have been rockin' out with my Star Wars figures! Using Clawtron and Brainoid as bounty hunters is perfect...in fact, that idea makes me want to put together a huge crowd of bounty hunters from different vintage toy lines! I didn't know the name, but just looked up Empire Toy Works and absolutely recognize the buildings. Some of them look like they came right out of Star Wars - awesome stuff!
Go Brad!…..he’s got a better light saber than any of the Kenner figures! Hey! That looks familiar!…one of my friends had one of time traveler 😊figures….maybe a blue one?
Love this video. I vaguely remember the Fisher price adventure people but the Micronauts and wind up robots I do. I used to have commander adama and the wind up robot as a kid. All I had was Luke's landspeeder and a few figures. I used to put Han Solo in his blister fill with water and freeze him pretending he was in Carbonite, poor guy. In 1980 I used to have a white space plane/ship that glowed in the dark I thought was really cool. I used that as Luke's xwing even though it had no cockpit and you can't put the figure in, whish I knew what it was. Didn't have playsets so coffee table became the death star or rebel base or cantina. Had only a small number of figures so I played they used to fight each other for control of the Darth Vader case lol. I had 4lom and bossk before boba Fett and the emperor was a mail in. Wow 😲 good times with star wars figures as a kid.
As a kid in the early 2000s I had Harry Potter action figures. I had Harry and Hermione but not Ron so I used the little boy from the playskool doll house from the 90s
Great list. You cited two of mine. The Tomy Rascal and micronauts traveler. We used to mix multiple lines of figures into one big universe including fisher price adventure people, GI Joe and an assortment of whatever else we had on hand. Any Joe with camo doubled as an Endor extra and transformers often showed up as droids. Could Daggitt play an Ewok? So many possibilities
Another great video, my friend! "Toy crossovers" always worked pretty well back then. I remember using Playmobil and other toy lines with my Joes even though they were out of scale.
While I was watching this, I was thinking "Charon Boatman as the Emperor," and sure enough, he was mentioned at the end. =) That grim reaper-y visage pretty much screamed Palpatine. Good call on the one wind up robots. I faintly remember mine hanging out with the rest of my childhood Star Wars crew. Even later on, when G.I. Joe made the scene, some of the Joes wound up doing double duty as Star Warriors, especially once I started getting into customizing. Toothpicks also wound up being my replacement lightsabers, as well as coloured cocktail swords. My step-dad was a nightclub manager, so he could get some replacement swords.
I certainly miss those innocent days of childhood, playing with my toys and building forts for them...or finding uses for everyday, household items in their adventures! :)

Heh. I used to put my Rascal Robot in with the droids on occasion, too, and I still have the little guy, somewhere. Used to bring in some similarly-scaled figures from other lines all throughout my childhood. Heck, I still throw some "crossovers" into my displays to this day. My favourite was when my pal Findswoman was able to find a set of Mini-Muppet figurines for me that contained the Snowths, so I could have them hanging out with Amanaman. (Doot DOO doot doo-doo!)
Well u might of heard this before but my brother and substituted vehicles more than we did figures, STP vehicles and we had A gi joe team mobile we used as our jawa sand crawler ,we had an extra death star commander we paint the helmet B&W and made a black vest that became our rebel soldier and we made a red shoulder guard for a mos eisley storm trooper
What a great video! Maybe the best I have watched about Star Wars ever! Nothing against collectors, but sometimes I feel many have never played with the toys in their childhood! Easiest way to see that is if you say you wanted to have a wedge Antilles figure in that time...nobody wanted that, because we had imagination, don’t need three x-wing Pilots for that! Also, I like that your figures here look like somebody played with them...when I see other vids it’s all so sterile as if it has no souls...your figures have...I feel like making my own video about the same topic, what replacements we did as many toy lines were interchangeable such as battlestar Galactica, buck Rogers and fisher price (I remember I used a black robot from fisher price as Darth Vader...really bad ass:) I also used a lot of alien creatures for the cantina, but my coolest replacement was maybe the playmobil Astro Droid to replace R2d2 or the other R4 unit...and maybe one of the simplest replacements: the Death Star Droid was my c3po until I got the real one...and btw x-wing Luke HAS black hair...or he dyed his eye brows to make them fit to the sun glasses he wears;) I enjoyed this video:)
Thank you so much for your comment! Those are some great substitutions you had as a kid! Yes, I definitely played with my toys as a kid. Going in the other direction, using Star Wars figs as stand ins for other lines, I used Bespin Han Solo for Indiana Jones. Who didn’t? I put a little hat made of clay on his head.
Oh, Excellent! I was lucky enough to actually have an Indiana Jones figure, but I suspect the Bespin Han would have been my stand-in if I didn't have the official figure!
A stand in I used as an ATAT walker was the GoBots Command Center. Once I got an official one I gave the GoBots Command Center to my cousin for him to use as a ATAT walker. ruclips.net/video/4YGIef0OTJ0/видео.html

A pan head machine screw made an awesome 1970’s pre-Maglite flashlight and a roll of dental floss in the red medical backpack brought a whole Spider Man climbing element. Lastly remember Mork and his spaceship egg?
I had red Snagletooth, and an extra so, I also had a Battlestar Galactica Admiral Adama figure... so Adamas head came off, and Snaggletooth went on in place. Bamb! Blue Snaggletooth!. Adamas head went on Red Snaggletooth and he became an Ugnaut.
I had the Buzzard from remcos the villains action figures and I pretended like he was the vulture from Spider-Man against my secret War Spider-Man when I was a kid
i has one of those Battlestar Gallactica Cylons, an Ovion, and also "Maximillian" from The Black Hole, the Micronaut what came with that blue sarcophagus, a wind-up robot rascal, etc. - nothing was off limits LOL my little nephew would never subscribe to this and will FREAK OUT if you deviate even slightly from the plot - one time i was using his Wampa as the Bumble from The Island of Misfit Toys to entertain his little sisters and he about went ballistic on me

Leia was the true hero of STAR WARS? She only had the Death Star plans because spies died stealing them. She was only able to deliver those plans because others intervened to rescue her and return her to the Rebels. She's the equivalent of a pizza delivery person, only one that doesn't own their own car. Hell, the 'droids are technically more heroic in that film...
Yes. In my opinion, Leia was the true hero of Star Wars. This pizza delivery person was delivering quite an important pizza that she knew was extremely dangerous to deliver at great risk to her own life, not assigning someone under her to deliver it. She faced Darth Vader with no apparent fear and kept her secrets about the rebel base in the face of torture. Her calm in the face of battle got Han, Luke, and Chewbacca out of the detention block. She was there, in person and often developing strategies for many of the major battles. she went on her own to rescue Han from Jabba and was even the one to actually kill Jabba. These are just some examples of that I think support her heroism. There are more. I don't believe the fact that she had help voids her contributions to the rebellion. No one was working alone. I respect that we each have our own opinions, but mine is definitely that Leia was the real hero of Star Wars.

We would use pop-rivet nails as swords. They fit in GI Joe hands and they were metal!
I think I had one of those as a kid that I used as a sword for some of my action figures! I have no idea where I got it!
A stand in I used as an ATAT walker was the GoBots Command Center. Once I got an official one I gave the GoBots Command Center to my cousin for him to use as a ATAT walker. ruclips.net/video/4YGIef0OTJ0/видео.html
That would actually make a great stand-in for the Star Wars walker! :)
@@WeHadThat :) Keep up the great videos.
@@No1.OriginalTrilogyStarWarsFan Thank you!
3:45 your cocktail sword light saber is bombers and you’d have been welcome in our backyard galaxy. Per the Adventure People? A pan head machine screw made an awesome 1970’s pre-Maglite flashlight and a roll of dental floss in the red medical backpack brought a whole Spider Man climbing element. Lastly remember Mork and his spaceship egg?
I had red Snagletooth, and an extra so, I also had a Battlestar Galactica Admiral Adama figure... so Adamas head came off, and Snaggletooth went on in place. Bamb! Blue Snaggletooth!. Adamas head went on Red Snaggletooth and he became an Ugnaut.
Artoo was THE hero of all (non-disneyfied) Star Wars!
I had the Buzzard from remcos the villains action figures and I pretended like he was the vulture from Spider-Man against my secret War Spider-Man when I was a kid
It's amazing how much we used our imaginations to make the toys we had fit into the worlds we wanted to make!
i has one of those Battlestar Gallactica Cylons, an Ovion, and also "Maximillian" from The Black Hole, the Micronaut what came with that blue sarcophagus, a wind-up robot rascal, etc. - nothing was off limits LOL
my little nephew would never subscribe to this and will FREAK OUT if you deviate even slightly from the plot - one time i was using his Wampa as the Bumble from The Island of Misfit Toys to entertain his little sisters and he about went ballistic on me
What you left out is that Clash of the Titans, the movie, gave us Gen X-ers our first big dose of hot 80’s chick nudity. Best scene in the entire movie 😂😂
Charon's name is not pronounced with a "sh" sound. It's a hard "k" sound in the movie, and the accent's on the first syllable. ruclips.net/video/sKsOpYkwqbQ/видео.html
Well drat. Thank you for letting me know! Maybe I was pronouncing it like the character from Star Trek. I really need someone who has a vast knowledge of all this stuff to review my videos before I post them! :)
I did not use any substitutes. As a kid, I was a purist when it came to my Star Wars action figures.
I should have gotten more Flash Gordon 5 months ago when they were cheaper.
Were they cheaper 5 months ago??? I'm passively collecting them at the moment.
@@WeHadThat I got flash and ming for 5 a piece. I saw the other hard to finds for 40-60. Together!
@@camcordernonsense5264 Woah! I would definitely pay $5 for Flash or Ming (or any of the figures from this line!) But I may never own the ones that cost $40 to $60!
@@WeHadThat im thinking I may sacrifice a whole figure thought and go with no tail.
@@camcordernonsense5264 Maybe the Lion dude, but what a tail on that Lizzard Woman!
I had a playmobil droid that looks like r2d2
The guy with the white beard I call him Kenny rogers
