If I'm not under orders and was not designated for stop loss, you don't get to tell me I abandoned anyone. I served a full tour, supported my fellow Marines to the highest possible standard, recognized by 3 certcoms, 4 cert for achievement, 8 letters of appreciation, and a Navy achievement medal, along with 4 promotions (2 meritorious) and winning Marine of the quarter. As long as I or anyone does the service to an exemplary degree, don't worry about when we choose to do other things in our life. We didn't break contracts and if you feel abandoned that I didn't stay for a 20 year war, the problem is you. No one is contesting that he served those years. That IN NO WAY changes the facts, however. When you are part of the military chain of command, AT ANY LEVEL, you are bound to FOLLOW that chain of command. He didn't. He told his CSM that he would deploy to Iraq, and less than 2 months later, while going outside that chain of command, he bailed on his unit. You could serve honorably for 50 years--but when you stop serving honorably and you're dishonest about your intentions, actions, and motives, that changes things. Fact. Ever serve in uniform? I have. Ever been deployed to a combat zone? I have. NONE of us really wanted to go to combat. But we went. Because that's what we signed up and agreed to if called upon. Walz lied about "carrying a gun into war", and many other details. Facts. Don't like it? Facts don't care about how you feel.

My God, a man volunteered at 17 to serve. He didn't retire after 20 yrs service, but opted to continue. At 24 yrs he sought to continue public service as an elected official, and turned in his papers. He didn't yet know if he was going to be nominated. When he knew this, he informed his commanding officer, rather than a senior NCO. He was honorably discharged in order to campaign for office. He's being criticised by a party who has a leader who dodged the draft several times, and who's deputy served four years as a desk jockey. This is madness.
He instead retires at 24 from Italy, not 25. Lies about his rank because he didn't complete his two year training stint. He was a Master sergeant not a sergeant major. Says he carried a weapon in war, in Italy? Then refers to the national guard as 19 yo cooks when asked to send them in as Minnesota burned. He is what Thomas Paine wrote of as a Sunshine Patriot. My father was a master sergeant. I was in too. His kind were a dime a dozen. Not the guys to count on when real sacrifice was needed.
Trump like Biden and Clinton got a deferment. JD Vance was in Iraq escorting journalists into the combat areas. Walz was home pretending he was in the actual war.

The military didn't "stoploss" Walz and force him to go, so the upper ranks clearly didn't have a problem with it.
Not only did Walz go on to serve in Congress, but he constantly fought for veteran's issues. Maybe Joolin should recognize that, if he could get past his butt hurt status. Not holding my breath.

As a veteran of the Gulf War, he is entitled to retire. I know from my experience, people were brought back after they left the Army. If Walz was needed they could have not let him retire. This is a nothing burger that doesn’t even merit the time they are spending on this topic
Waltz didn't follow procedures to "retire" as he was past the date to refusal and would have been compelled to serve. As the Sgt Major said: "He was under 'STOP LOSS' regulations and NOT ELEGABLE to back out (retire) without showing a MAJOR Cause.
Hey putz, he bypassed his chain of command to get past the stop loss order. Maybe you should actually get a clue or shut your hole. Unlikely you're a veteran, if you are, you're a completely fucking clueless one.
As a gulf war and a Iraq veteran this POS lied about being in a war for political gain he is a coward if you cant understand that I question your integrity
What he did wrong is present himself to the public as retiring at a rank that he never actually completed the requirements to earn... while running for political office. Lying to constituents about the actual rank you retired at is no different from wearing a medal you didn't earn. What is crazy about it is... there was no reason to do it. "Master Sergeant" is more than impressive and credible. Pretending the "Conditional" rank you held for a few days before you retired was your actual rank just creates a problem later in your political career like now.
When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, he dropped out of the National Guard and allowed his unit to go without him. Walz was well aware as a Command Sergeant Major what his battalion was doing & planning awaiting the call to go to Iraq. He went over his units commanding officer's head to get out of the national guard, something you do not do. (Watch the CNN interview of that) If he lied about his military service and that is called “stolen valor,” again never deployed to a combat zone. I'm not putting anyone down that has joined the national guard. And i don't want a man making that might make devising for our country that turns tail and runs at the 1st notion of acton.
People are so insufferable about this. The man did 24 YEARS. Who cares if his retirement was convenient. To have people who never served criticize him is ridiculous. Walz did beyond his time and is still serving to this day.
What's worse, really, is former service members criticizing THIS set of circumstances and voting for a non-combat veteran who rode a desk in Iraq for a year and former president who never served but was asked to 4 or 5 times. THAT'S what is in sufferable to me

False. Walz committed stolen valor by falsely claiming he retired as an E-9, when in fact he retired as an E-8. It's not unheard of at all, and it can make people above you mad, but Walz was running for a government position and he had every right to retire and not go. We have to remember too that at this time Walz was a brand new father around the age of 41, after years of struggling for a kid. A lot or complaints from someone campaigning who has never served, and /or served for a minimum number of years. As a service member who had served over 20 years, he was eligible to retire, and as such dropped his papers, and received concurrence from his Command. The bottom line and focus should be that the Governor received an Honorable Retirement / Discharge for his long service. If, based on what the CSM recanted over and over, his issues was personal and he seems to to be harboring some ill feelings which has nothing to do with the Governor’s “documented service”. It is also important to note as said above and confirmed, that Governor Walz was not on the promotion list. At that point a decision had to be made… stay or retire. Yes of course there was, that is why this guy is being ridiculous. Walz decided to retire because he wanted to run for congress. He filed to run for congress in February 2005, shortly after in March 2005 put in his retirement notice, then officially retired and left in May 2005. His unit was not notified of deployment for Iraq until at least JULY or August of 2005, and they didn't leave for Iraq until almost 2006! So no, Walz did not run away.
They were not even in the same unit. CSM Walz filed for retirement almost a year prior to the alert. He retired as Sgt Major because he did not take the last course to keep CSM at retirement.
I am overseas with the military right now and I am disgusted with this swift-boating of our service members. Walz served 24 years, which is 4 years more than retirement, and it was during wartime that he decided to stay in for 4 more years. At that point, he could have retired whenever he wanted to unless he was designated for stop loss, which he never was. So this is not much adu about nothing; this is pathetic. Vance only served for 4 years as a PR guy, but he served. He also could have stayed in for another 4 years, but he didn’t, so did he leave his troops during a time of war? No. His time of service was up. But compare 4 years becoming a Corporal to 24 years of service becoming a Sergeant Major, and Vance should be ashamed of himself for ever questioning Walz for something like “stolen valor,” especially when his new boss is a draft dodger. What a loser of a human being Vance is, but he did serve. We will not let anyone denigrate Walz’s service. The media should be honoring him, not allowing this nonsense to even be a story.

24 years in the National Guard equates to just over 4 years of actual uniform service. National Guardsmen meet one weekend a month and two-week stint per year. Walz was at home 300 days of each of those 24 years. There's a reason the National Guard are called "Weekend Warriors”.

@camiesugden4852 Finally, someone with common sense. There are people who keep saying "he knew it was coming so he quit." Being told that a deployment may happen is not the same thing as actually being deployed. It's disturbing that there are actually people here who have served in the military (or at least claim they did), who act like Walz is some kind of deserter. He used his "major"status when he never earned it and said "I carried weapons of war in war"that"s "stolen valor"
⬆️ Wrong. He earned the rank of Command Sergeant Major but retired prior to holding that rank for three years, so like all military retirees (except Ronny Jackson who unethically calls himself Admiral) his official rank slides back to his previous rank, in his case that’s Sergeant Major.
My dad’s discharge paperwork took three months and that was just to end his standard time he signed up for. They even told him he still had 30 days vacation and suggested he take it during his last month because they wouldn’t “pay it out” if he didn’t take it. This was during Viet Nam.
Walz retired, that’s a lot more paperwork and verification time. My uncle retired from the Air Force after +20 years, he notified them a year in advance and then the paperwork process took longer than 6 months due to his security clearances.
This guy is mad at Walz for another reason. I think I heard he was promoted to command sargent major which may have caused him to report to someone else not of the same rank, even though this guy had more “time in grade”. His wording and actions suggest he has something personal against Walz and it may be as simple as he got denied retirement and Walz got it? We’ll probably never know for certain.
vance was a marine and based on the attitude of most of the marines I know, they tend to look down on all the other armed services because they are made to believe they are the best and above everyone else.

If Walz hadn’t gotten his orders and had served his 20 years, then this sounds like a personal issue with this Sgt Major - who, if he claims he knows procedures then he should know that someone still in service after 20 years has the right to retire when they desire. This CSM is simply upset that Walz didn't give him the courtesy of informing him of his retirement. There is no "protocol" of this CSM being involved in the retirement. That protocol is between the soldier (Walz) and the Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard. I'm sorry CNN, but you just wasted people's time with this interview. And yes, I am a retired regular Army soldier.
seems like the CSM said something earlier and CNN was following the story to get clarification.
Cnn wants trump to win so he can become a dictator and implement projet 2025 ending democracy. Oh and get huge tax brakes at our expense.
So out of curiosity, their is no code of conduct that states go through your chain of command 1st, and not jump over commanding officers head when making decisions that effect the battalion? Because what I'm hearing is that he was part of the leadership that was getting things ready and backed our leaving everyone else behind once they once they were scheduled to go to Iraq.
Ageed.
@@RichardJr1134Senior non-commissioned officers (NCO)s are not in the chain of command. Sergeant Majors are in advisory roles and have responsibility for executing tactical orders issued by officers and carried out by the NCO corps and the soldiers under their authority. The CSM seems to have a personal grievance with a peer I this case for not having gotten the professional courtesy of being informed. The CSM also struck me as very by the book and possibly inflexible.
CNN did a poor job of highlighting these dynamics during the interview.

All I got from that is that his commanding officer holds a huge grudge against Walz for speaking to his superior instead of only going through him. He might be angry that Walz spoke to someone higher in rank, but that is Walz's right. Sour grapes from the commander for not being as important as the officer which Walz spoke with isn't Walz's problem. It is also clear from this officer that Walz had been planning and pursuing his election bid before he found out about the deployment, which refutes Vance's claims.
