Jack White is all about harsh sounds, simple riffs that permeate the songs, and being the only musician there besides the drummer. That keeps the soundscape uncluttered, and the sound a little crude. But he's an instrumental and compositional genius.

Twenty One Pilots is also only the singer and drummer, Tyler (singer) and Josh (drummer)😅. They have many many songs and videos out over the years and have traveled the world. Tyler can also play several different instruments.... Keyboard, guitar and drums.
Voiceplay did several of their songs. Ride, Heathens, Stressed Out in a mashup with Kurt Hugo Schneider. They also did Ride by itself.

In no way is this down-playing Jack White's brilliance, but his lyrics aren't the sort you need to spend time dissecting. He tends to adlib them, while working out the melodies; whatever pours out of his soul and fits the music. He doesn't usually start with a story concept. He starts with music, and lets the spirit of blues carry him away. Many of his songs had no lyrics until the moment of recording in the studio.
This is a testament to his genius, in fact, as the lyrics he comes up with on the fly are so strong, vibrant, and profound, they feel like they must have taken ages to construct.

    • @Silvermoonscorpion
      @Silvermoonscorpion 2 года назад +3

Not entirely true. I heard him explain how Carolina drama came to be. I'll agree lyrics come later but that he's not telling stories, no I can't get on board with that. He's specifically stated that he creates characters to make songs/stories about.
Where I tend to disagree with him is that none of his characters have anything to do with him.. I do agree he does channel what he creates, however, any artist filters their craft through their lens.. to some extent, but that's where the beauty is.

This song, especially, is tough for a duo to pull off. There is a bass line (played on guitar, but still), rhythm guitar part, lead guitar (including using a slide), the drums, and obviously the vocals. This live performance is nothing compared to what they did in the studio, check it out. Meg is a simple but compelling percussionist. Jack is an insane wizard. You could explore their entire body of work and continually be delighted and surprised.

That aggressive and persistent riff just annihilates me every time. It's so great to re-discover so many great tunes through your reactions to them.
"Tusk" by Fleetwood Mac, "Grazing in the Grass" by Hugh Masekela, "Bron Yr Aur Stomp" by Led Zeppelin, "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull, "Rock the Bells" by Run DMC .... they all (to my loving ear) have that hard-charging, persistent sort of beat I just *cannot* get away from even if I wanted to!
You reacting to this song has just set the rest of my Sunday afternoon housework playlist theme.... thank you!
I just discovered your channel _this morning_ and I'm really enjoying your articulate, thoughtful, authentically nuanced takes... Jack White takes a lot of influences from early blues, delta blues and a little Detroit rock radio...
He blends it up with some modern gear and rips out some really great tracks. I find genius in his simplicity and his selection of gear. I think the guitar here has a "clean" pick up and a "dirty" pick up that he is switching between. This allows him to not require a pedal. ZZ top's Billy Gibbons has a few set up this way as well.
Jack's voice is like a third instrument in many tracks, using vocal modulations and scat lyrics to perform fills. As for bands, the white stripes have some interesting stuff.

He had an upholstery business, and one day heard a Led Belly record and how hearing how he could do so much with just a guitar, decided he wanted to do that. When I heard this song on the radio for whatever reason I thought it was good but wasn’t wowed. In 2003 my friend asked me to see them (at a relatively small venue in Ohio). I was BLOWN AWAY. I couldn’t believe so much sound was coming from two people. It was amazing.

Here's a suggestion for future reactions: take a tour of some of the most influential black guitarists in rock 'n roll (I'm not going to say African-American because one of the artists I'm recommending is African).
Jimi Hendrix: The single most influential guitarist in rock 'n roll. It is literally impossible to understand hard rock or any of its derivatives (heavy metal, punk, etc) without understanding Jimi Hendrix.
Living Colour: This black rock band is known for blending various styles of hard rock and hard rock derivatives. Although technically a one-hit-wonder, they are still out there making music, and long after their one hit, guitar magazines were obsessed with guitarist Vernon Reid, so the influence of the guitarist extends well beyond their one hit. The one song they are known for criticizes the notion of the "cult of personality." You seem old enough and educated enough to remember listening to adults talk about that subject in concerned whispers.
Lenny Kravitz: He brought back old school 70s-style hard rock in a big way back in the 1990s. Amazing talent. Iconic. While the bands in Seattle were putting a modern spin on 70s hard rock, Kravitz was tapping the main vein and bringing it back straight.
Rage Against the Machine: Tom Morello is the single most innovative guitarist in rock history. You simply would not believe the sounds he can get out of a guitar. Famous for once playing a guitar solo without the guitar, by pulling the aux cable out of his guitar and jamming it into his hand. His mind is that far out of the box. Morello has a master's degree in political science from an Ivy League school, while vocalist Zach de la Rocha has a Ph.D. in anthropology. Their music is more politically charged than just about anything you've ever heard before.
Animals as Leaders: This newer, unique band has two guitars and a drummer. The guitarists use strange 8-string guitars that each have 6 guitar strings and two bass strings, so they effectively have two guitars and one bass guitar being played by two people. It's utterly insane. Tosin Abasi (one of the guitarists) is the future of prog metal, and the future is in good hands. There are no lyrics for you to react to, but it's mind-blowing.
My apologies if I left out any important influential black guitarists, such as Chuck Berry (one of the inventors of rock 'n roll), or Ledbelly (blues guitarist whose fingerprints are all over rock 'n roll if you know where to look), or Sister Loretta Tharp (one of the other inventors of rock 'n roll who basically blended blues with gospel music).

I had a Picture of Jacks Pedal Board from the White Stripes. He had a Big Muff Distortion Pedal ,Digitech Wammy Pedal ,Electro-Harmonix POG for Octives. I use to trip on his Guitar sounded like a Bass and him playing with a Slide.

    The guy is really eccentric.
It's a duo because he is obsessed with the number 3. They have voice, guitar, and drums. Adding another person would be more than 3, so he doesn't like it.
People criticize her drumming for being simple, but honestly, keeping the drums simple helps put more spotlight on the amazing guitar work if you all me. A drummer who's knows how to stay out of the way is a good thing. Another example of this is the drummer from AC-DC, who is famous for never ever using a fill.
They are divorced. He kept her last name after the divorce.
There is no bass player. When you hear what sounds like a bass, he is using a pedal to drop the sound of his guitar an octave.
Do check out some of their other songs.

I believe he is using a digitech whammy pedal. The pedal gives him an octave above and below the note he plays - giving him the bass and guitar parts in one. Then for the chorus riff he is using a fuzz pedal on top of that for the distortion.

Jack White also did a mini documentary called "It might Get Loud" with Jimmy Page and the Edge where they talk about guitar playing and jam together in the end. Worth a check out.

Meg was his wife. Jack is amazing, a genius even... but weird. Meg and Jack were married for 4 years. After they got divorced in 2000, he would introduce Meg in public as his sister. I don't know if it was some inside joke or Jack just being Jack, but it was a pretty strange thing to do. .... and here we are almost 22 years later, everyone thinks Meg was his frickin' sister.

  • @bobhiggins77

yeah Jack White usually uses a few fx pedals to fill out the space. Usually a "P.O.G." by Electro harmonix (Poly Octave Generator) makes a guitar sound like a Bass guitar or an organ its cool.
he likes Fuzz distortion too which definitely sounds wild and out of control (Hendrix used fuzz too) or the almost broken tone you can get from vintage gear pushed way past what it was intended for.
the documentary "Its about to get loud" is quite good for a bit more guitar culture stuff.. Led Zep's guitarist and the edge from U2 are on there too ✌✌

When you are watching a live version, you notice more that Jack is playing that guitar as 2 separate instruments at.the.same.time. that's why it sounds a bit rough. In the studio version, i believe he plays multiple instruments overlaid.

Jack White also has a lot of solo work, as well as his side projects. His best known side project is definitely The Raconteurs, thanks to their hit “Steady as She Goes.” He’s also a member of the supergroup The Dead Weather- you should check out “I Cut Like a Buffalo.”
He’s played drums for a band called Goober and the Peas, and has also been a member of the bands The Upholsterers and The Go (according to Wikipedia). But I’m not familiar enough with the last three bands to recommend any songs from them

The NFL team Baltimore Ravens have adopted this song. I have been in stadium with 65,000+ people all chanting “Ooooh-OH-oh-Ooohh-oh” it is amazing. It can even been easily be heard on TV, especially when the D makes a good play or a Ravens (named so due to Edgar Allen Poe’s live and grave site in Baltimore) TD.
