Thanks for this tutorial. I thought playing PS1 games was just as easy as putting PS1 ISO to the drive and worked like PS2 did. I managed to play Nascar Rumble and it works great.
Thank you so much!! I'm trying to play an old Tiger Woods game with my old man (lots of memories) and I couldn't get them to work! Stupid me thought the OPL could just read PS1 games normally, as if they were PS2 .ISOs!! I seriously can't thank you enough for this video, it means a lot to both me and my father.

I'm glad to finally play them on the big screen. I just wish whoever is responsible for the Popstarter emulator could update the program so I can play Tekken 1 without the sound glitches, and Tekken 3 without the visual glitches, and etc.
It works but the game's compatibility varies. It is best to check its remarks on any PS1 game you want to start so that you can find out their problems until the next update.
The OPL manager renames your VCD files to the "SERIAL.Game.VCD" structure so that OPL can load them. Unless you look up each serial id of each game and rename them yourself, the "batch convert VCD naming" part of OPL manager is mandatory. You kinda mention the file structure in the description, but I was completely skipping this step at first because you mentioned OPL manager was optional (the art part is). Still appreciate this video, just something that threw me off at first.

Here's some tips for component cable users, mostly YPbPr or Yipper cables and even PS2 HDMI adapter (the black ones) - use GSM to force PS2 to display PS1 games by setting it to NTSC/PAL depending on your game. There's also an option for PS1 HDTV settings but you're might want to stick to default NTSC/PAL mode if the PS1 HDTV settings displays incorrectly. However, there's some caveat - missing colors but minimal and also 240p display tends to be in widescreen so you might need to use TV display settings to adjust the super-widescreen display. It is best to use RGB component cables like SCART cables to enjoy PS1 titles or using good PS1/PS2 HDMI adapters like Pound and Hyperkin as well.

Thanks very much for this! Didn't realize how simple it was. Have been playing PS1 games off my PS2 HDD for the past few months but whenever I used WinHIIP to fix something with a PS2 game, it seemed to wipe my PS1 games off the HDD or mess up the POPS folder they were in. I finally thought I would just try them on USB so I can avoid this and it works perfectly. For some reason, the PS1 games load up faster too compared to when I played them off HDD and I would have a blank screen for 40-50 seconds.
To anybody having the issue where when you start a game it boots to the launcher make sure you have a good pops_iox file. Mine kept doing that until I downloaded a new one and now it works. Edit: I got it working, thanks! 've been trying this for the entire day, and it literally does nothing. I tried it on a USB drive, and I tried it on an SMB pi. The game simply does not show in the apps folder through SMB, and it doesn't show anything on the USB drive I made for it. I literally just want to have one PSX game on it, Street Fighter EX2 Plus. It's in VCD format, followed everything to a T.

As I was having problems with sending files via USB I decided to give rad host a try. The connection keeps flashing between connected and in connected I've tried different ethernet cables. It won't connect at all as an admin. Often the PS2 just freezes up. Every attempt to get this to work is a nightmare. But I still keep trying.

How do you play multi-part games in opl? Played RE2 on both discs no problem but... scenario B on both characters does not allow me to continue. Any suggestions?

Having a small issue, whenever I enter mass:/, the browser freezes so I can’t install OPL manager. My USB is exFAT since it can’t format to fat32, but my PS2 games load fine off of this USB though.
I just solved that issue yesterday, you're in luck ;) 1. turn on (or restart) your ps2 2. as soon as you do hold the start button, you'll see something like 'infinity disabled' 3. restart your ps2 (don't press anything this time) 4. proceed to install opl as you normally would
My MC0 does not have a boot folder... when I tried to create one and paste the OPNPS2LD, when I try to open it, will just show a blank screen and lock up
Later OPL doesnt have the option for PS1 games (latest version 1.0.0), not sure if thats why I cant get it to work. doesnt recognise any games on the USB.
when i try to run a ps1 game with this (it appears correctly in opl), it quits to uLaunchElf with a message saying 'No Disc !'. Any ideas what the issue could be?
All my PS1 games fail to boot. I'm using the provided OPL version (newer versions don't seem to have PSX support...). The provided POPSTARTER version etc. The VCD files are properly renamed for OPL to see them. But when trying to start a game all I get is a black screen. The games I tried (Broken Sword 2, Harry Potter 1 and 2, all PAL) did the exact same. Notably with almost no USB activity (though not none, but for about 0.5 seconds at the very start, probably just POPSTARTER?) I will soon try games the compatibility list notes specifically as working. But due to the way it fails I'm assuming I did something wrong in the setup, any idea what it could be? (/What information about my current setup is needed to diagnose the issue!)
It doesn't work for me i can't see any PS1 games in PS2OpenLoader why? Did i have the wrong Version OPL 1436? I have this version because all my PS2 Games works there. With the older Version not all games works... Do I need a special Version of OPL for PS1 games? I don't have the PS1 Games option on the settings for Default menu and no PS1 Games display mode to set....
Where are you storing your PS2 games? If it is an SD card formatted as exFAT that could be part of the issue. I noticed that the OPL version that could read my exFAT sd card (and show my PS2 games) could not load PS1 games. Switching the SD card to fat32 and using an older version of OPL loader made the games show up, but I still have not figured out how to get them to work yet.
I made everything as said in this tutorial with same game and also other multi cd game. Both PS1 games say, NO CD. I have everything named correctly and all covers downloaded and everything looks in order. So what might be the problem?
Question. My popstarter is written by japanese language everytime I exit from my game? I saw an English version but i don't know how to change it into it.
I've tried this multiple times and have struggled with this issue for at least a month now. So I've done all the steps - converted the files to vcd-format, renamed them through OPL-manager, created the right folders and inserted the right files in them but I still can't see my PS1 games on the ps1 games list in OPL. They just don't appear at all, whatever I try to do. If I refresh the PS1 Games page, OPL freezes and I have to restart the system. Tried 4 different versions of OPL daily builds (1.641, 1.609, 1.392, 1.406). Still doesn't work. Some other things I've tried: - trying another POPSTARTER.ELF file (POPStarter_r13_RIP_06) - also putting POPS.PAK in the POPS folder - tried another cue2pops converter (PSXVCD) I don't know what to try anymore. Is it possible that the fault is in my usb stick? It's just a regular 16gb FAT32 usb 2.0 stick.
Update: tried once again with 1.609 after redownloading everything and I get the ps1 games list now! Too bad any of them don't still work. What the fuck

I had the same issue but I solved it by simply following all the instructions from the tutorial and then changing POPStarter's USB access delay value. To do this you have to edit the POPSTARTER.ELF file, located in the POPS folder in the usb drive, with an hexadecimal editor (xvi32 for example): Go to offset 0x413 and change the default value from 0x02 to 0x03 or to 0x04 or even continue to increase it to a value until it works for your usb drive, then finally save the file and try again in your console. Make sure your usb drive is a reliable one. A value of 0x04 did it for my usb drive. I have a ps2 slim model 90010 with a modbo 4.0 chip. It works fine now.
Hey I followed this 100% to the exact things you did, but once I copy the OPL build to the memory card and boot nothing happens. Just a black screen. I tried a few different OPL builds and none of them loaded. Do I maybe need to erase the very old (0.93 or something) build currently on my PS2? Because I tried just loading OPL from the main menu in FMCB and it wasn't the new build but just the same I've had on there for a long time
Give that a try, follow the text guides at ps2 home. Not sure why you are having issues, just make sure got all necessary required files, and use opl manager v21.6 to rename game files properly

I mean, how can I merge them into one .VCD file and apply it to OPL Manager and if I can do it, how can I switch discs in-game?
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Can I ask another question? After playing the game, can I return to OPL by pressing special button combinations on the controller instead of restarting the console? It sometimes becomes annoying to repeat the whole path to open OPL via Fortuna.

Hello, I got a freemcboot memory card but wanted to run PS1 games. It has OPL already installed on it and detects my files game and art, but when I press run game I get a "no disc" error and sent to a file browser. If anyones got a fix, I appreciate it.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks his intro is lowkey hilarious.
I cannot play Sony 1 and Sony 2 games at the same time Why? How can I play them with one flash ?!
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Well is there a way to work together
Edit: I got it working, thanks!
've been trying this for the entire day, and it literally does nothing. I tried it on a USB drive, and I tried it on an SMB pi. The game simply does not show in the apps folder through SMB, and it doesn't show anything on the USB drive I made for it. I literally just want to have one PSX game on it, Street Fighter EX2 Plus. It's in VCD format, followed everything to a T.
bitbucket.org/ShaolinAssassin/popstarter-documentation-stuff/wiki/quickstart-usb for ideas, or look into mechapwn and use that play burnt cd-r and be done with it.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Well I did kind of end up getting it to work, but not like how you have it. I can run the elf from ulaunchelf, whichl; you know what, is fine by me. Thanks!
I've been trying to run resident evil 3 in opl for a few weeks with other tutorials. Thank you so much!
I couldn't can you help me?
Thanks for the awesome tutorial
One question how do i save my PS1 games files? Thru my old memory card? If by USB, can i migrate my save file from my old PS1 memory card?
As I was having problems with sending files via USB I decided to give rad host a try. The connection keeps flashing between connected and in connected I've tried different ethernet cables. It won't connect at all as an admin. Often the PS2 just freezes up. Every attempt to get this to work is a nightmare. But I still keep trying.
Radhost is not the simplest way to go about this. I prefer USB or smb with ps1 game playing.
I put my cue file in pops but wont show up on the menu what do i do? nm i got it thx
IT WORKS 100% MAN THANKS
Doesnt seem to say bad iso and ask to convert when I open OPL manager. I've tried literally everything and it just wont work but will recognize fine in manager
Probably bcoz you're using the laatest opl manager. must use the same version of opl manager as the above.
Failed for me, It shows the game but just an endless black screen when booting
same
Is the game fragmented? How about try a game we know that works to make sure process is good?
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia No, the issue turned out to be the dvd firmware version being incompatible
Can we switch to a seperate disc for the longer PS1 titles
How do you play multi-part games in opl?
Played RE2 on both discs no problem but...
scenario B on both characters does not allow me to continue.
Any suggestions?
Hmmm.. all the solutions I see are quite old. They involve writing a DISC.TXT e.g www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1593&p=8413&hilit=Multi+disk#p8413 any help on that would be cool.
Having a small issue, whenever I enter mass:/, the browser freezes so I can’t install OPL manager. My USB is exFAT since it can’t format to fat32, but my PS2 games load fine off of this USB though.
I just solved that issue yesterday, you're in luck ;)
1. turn on (or restart) your ps2
2. as soon as you do hold the start button, you'll see something like 'infinity disabled'
3. restart your ps2 (don't press anything this time)
4. proceed to install opl as you normally would
My MC0 does not have a boot folder... when I tried to create one and paste the OPNPS2LD, when I try to open it, will just show a blank screen and lock up
it says it is a 7z file and I have no clue what that means
IS ALIVE!! ty :D
DUDE U GOTTA HELP ME ,,,,I'M GETTING THE GAME NAME ALONG WITH ART COVER UNDER PS1 MENU BUT THE GAME IS NOT LOADING AT ALL.
Resolution not supported in oled tv?! Why?
You need to get bitfunx adabter HDMI ... ps1 games only Show on RGP colors
but what I do when the game ask for swap CD example and the game I wanna play : Legend of Dragoon
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia yea was bit dumb its all bout the save stats xD
Later OPL doesnt have the option for PS1 games (latest version 1.0.0), not sure if thats why I cant get it to work. doesnt recognise any games on the USB.
when i try to run a ps1 game with this (it appears correctly in opl), it quits to uLaunchElf with a message saying 'No Disc !'. Any ideas what the issue could be?
Could try using opl manager v21.6 to see if it can fix the issue.
Notably with almost no USB activity (though not none, but for about 0.5 seconds at the very start, probably just POPSTARTER?)
I will soon try games the compatibility list notes specifically as working. But due to the way it fails I'm assuming I did something wrong in the setup, any idea what it could be? (/What information about my current setup is needed to diagnose the issue!)
Figured it out! Turns out I somehow forgot to copy the POPS_IOX.PAK file causing it to not work obviously!
what about games with 2 or more cds? i followed the instructions and decided to add in re2 but the game won't show up on my usb opl menu
You ever figure this out?
Where are you storing your PS2 games? If it is an SD card formatted as exFAT that could be part of the issue. I noticed that the OPL version that could read my exFAT sd card (and show my PS2 games) could not load PS1 games. Switching the SD card to fat32 and using an older version of OPL loader made the games show up, but I still have not figured out how to get them to work yet.
I have a problem. Crash bandicoot 1 is black and white but the second game is not. Also GTA Vice city is black and white too. How do I fix this?
Ps2-Home seems down all the time. Anywhere else recommended for program downloads such as these? popstarter etc
Popstarter there is a bitbucket website (via google). Other homebrew check out psx-place.com
I made everything as said in this tutorial with same game and also other multi cd game. Both PS1 games say, NO CD. I have everything named correctly and all covers downloaded and everything looks in order. So what might be the problem?
Latest opl version? Could use opl manager to fix any issues too
Question. My popstarter is written by japanese language everytime I exit from my game? I saw an English version but i don't know how to change it into it.
SharpShark I know exactly what you are talking about. I have it noted for a future tutorial
The are some files you need to replace.
Google IGR Textures, or wait for a tutorial from versatile. There may be videos about this on youtube too.
Hello how can i swap disc on popstarter like playing disc 1 of metal gear solid then swapping to disc 2?
Thank you!
Some other things I've tried:
- trying another POPSTARTER.ELF file (POPStarter_r13_RIP_06)
- also putting POPS.PAK in the POPS folder
- tried another cue2pops converter (PSXVCD)
I don't know what to try anymore. Is it possible that the fault is in my usb stick? It's just a regular 16gb FAT32 usb 2.0 stick.
No I don't have it working yet
Update: tried once again with 1.609 after redownloading everything and I get the ps1 games list now! Too bad any of them don't still work. What the fuck
@@bman8363 UPDATE 2: GOT IT WORKING!
- Using 1.609 daily build: www.ps2-home.com/forum/download/file.php?id=13695
- POPSTARTER.ELF which is way newer, a work-in-progress from 2019, from here: tinyurl.com/y4r6nt4s (thanks to Olivier Deleauvive B.)
- POPS_IOX.PAK from here: filelayer.com/1cQE
Just follow the tutorial otherwise. This should make it work!
did everything games showed up but when i chose one it stayed black for about 5 seconds then it took me to the browser menu did i miss something? EDIT: I figured it out i need to have pops.pak and pops_IOX.PAK in the pops folder then it worked
Bryan Mendoza what should I google to find the pops pak file I can’t find it anywhere on google
I just looked it up and it was the first site
@@JustBryan0419 hey man, i have both files in my POPS Folder on the USB but it is still not working, i get the black screen then it returns me to the browser menu
I had the same issue! Did you find a fix?
My USB thumb drive already has an ART folder will just it put the cover art files their? I'm new
Please help anyone it says the game i want to play needs popstarter WIP06 b17 but dunno what the b17 means and can only find popstarter wip06 dunno if its a b17
i dont understand it either... can anyone explain?
Hello, I can play single-disc PS1 games thanks to this method but I have a question: How can I play games such as Driver 2 and Resident Evil 2 without separately downloading and applying all two discs? I mean, how can I merge them into one .VCD file and apply it to OPL Manager and if I can do it, how can I switch discs in-game?
I don't know about that, it isn't that difficult to use a 2 disc setup.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Well ok then, for now, rolling with the old method of downloading discs separately and loading them in order will be alright.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Can I ask another question? After playing the game, can I return to OPL by pressing special button combinations on the controller instead of restarting the console? It sometimes becomes annoying to repeat the whole path to open OPL via Fortuna.
Got to do a restart. I asked same questions to the dev and they said no they are not going to implement that feature (I forget why if that is a limitation of architecture or something else)
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Alright then. :) Thanks for the answers by the way.
The pops_iox.pak file is impossible to find. Most of the sites that hosted it have it removed, reported or you need to risk some obscure sites that hid the link behind 18 ad-waiting sites just to redirect you to a hosting site where the link is either expired or you can't download for one reason or another.
Broooooo!!! You are a ps2 god!!!!
I can't get into the cue2pops link. The Page doesn't come up.
I found a different place. It's all good.
Awesome tutorial! Is it possible that some games will run faster? In my opinion Resident Evil DC is running few fps too fast - any solution?
I can't comment on this, is the game correct region as your console, i.e. PAL for PAL console or NTSC for NTSC console?
HAY MUCHOS VIDEOJUEGOS DE PS1 QUE EL POPSTARTER O EL OPL NO ME LEEN TALES COMO POWERPUFF GIRLS, POWER RANGERS LIGHTSPEED RESCUE, YU GI OH FORBIDDEN MEMORIES, TARZAN ETC.... A QUE SE DEBE QUE NO ME LEAN LOS PROGRAMAS CASI NINGÚN ROM PS1 ?
Thank you so much you just got a new subscriber
So here's my issue....I have a relatively new OPL which shows me options such as USB, HDD, APPS AND ELF LOADER(not PS1 games) ..... It tried the method you suggested and no game appeared. Next I tried the conf_elm.cfg method (both present in the USB root directory as well as copied to the MC0:/opl folder).....and the XX.game name.ELF (with the SLUS game code created by opl manager).... What happens is that game shows on the OPL list ....but when I click it, it turns black for 5-10 seconds then goes back to the black browser menu.... And unfortunately as a result no PS1 games are working...... I deleted both the conf_elm.cfg files from.usb and memory card and tried to play through ulaunchELF ....it works.... But I would definitely like for my games to be playable on OPL...please help
I don't know why the games turn black, I don't recall that. Did you use opl manager v21 to rename your vcd files?
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I got my issue solved, I wasn't able to find a more recent version of OPL untill last weekend....changed all the PS1 game names with OPL manager 2.1 ...it worked. Thank you so much for your effort in making such insightful and helpful PS1/PS2 videos🙏🏻
Can you help me I want to play old tekken 3 Ps1 game on my PS2 but both CD and USB methods are not working i have FMCB installed.
So do I need a PS1 memory card for the saves or is the PS2 one OK? Great tutorial though!!
Popstarter can do virtual saves, so see if that helps you out.
Yeah it worked Thanks a lot!
So could I convert my PS1 memory card onto a USB the same way??
Pops isn't making a VCD on my computer... I turned off all my virus protections ect. Some odd reason I have a different Cue2pops also, but no files is being made.
How about psx2vcd?
Can I save my progress on a ps2 memcard? I can't remember it but someone said to me that I can't save ps1 games on a ps2 memcard.
Should create VMC file on memory card or usb. Otherwise get a cheap ps1 memory card
Popstarter wont use save files on a ps1 memory card
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia thanks, I hope you will still post contents on your channel.
Help please I don't see the "batch convert vcd naming" whenever i open the opl manager. It scans the ps2 games and my ps1 game but that batch convert doesn't appear 😔
Get the latest opl manager see if that helps
Thank you, very useful
I know this is an older video but how do I go about making OPL see my PS1 "vcds" seen on an internal hard drive? I would think it would just require some sort of config edit to make it see the iso/vcd locations.
You may have seen it already, there is internal hard drive video for fat ps2.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Yeah, thanks!
I did this all, it shows Castlevania sotn, but when I try to load the game it's just a black screen.
I don’t know why, but after I press X it says that Disk is not found
I tried playing FF7 on PS2 using the popstarter emulator. However, during battle, only the UI is shown in the screen and the rest is black(cloud barret and the enemies). You think you could help me out?
ive been using popstarter with the POOOF thing that the developer once mentioned, i have a texture error while playing sotn that doesnt allow me to proceed through the game, any help?
i have modded ps2 with hdd matrix 1.93, i tried ur method and copied elf files and clicked O on OPNPS2LD.ELF after entire process but opl didi load. Got black screen.. Any suggestions????
My downloaded game not come up with CUE file :/ What i have to do?
My question is can you have hdd connected with ps2 games and have usb drive with ps1 games at the same time? I have fmcb, popstarter and 10th anniversary opl.
OPL daily build has ps1 and ps2 support, so maybe it is smart enough to load games from more than one physical source? Give it a try
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Thanks for replying. Since the usb ports are so slow, do you know if I can partition the internal hard drive so that I can have ps2 games on one partition and on another partition have ps1 games? Solid videos and a great resource for sure.
One doubt..where do you save your ps1 games?. Do we need to setup virtual memory card for ps1 like we do in ps2
It creates a VMC for ps1 games automatically.
Hi. I need to know how return, reseting, to the OPL without came back to the Usb menù in ps2 backup (I have Freemcboot and OPL in the usb stick).
I think simplest is restart the ps2 and redo whole process
Awesome tutorial
Greetings to everyone. I recently was gifted an unmoded fat ps2. I was looking to play ps2 or possibly ps1 rom downloads from the net, on my ps2. Would i be able to do so, with just a ps2 memory card with freemcboot, along with necessary files on a usb/flashstick? Or is there more items, or things i need to do so?
i have managed to get tail of the sun to work but not digimon world 3 any help please
So they recently updated OPL to a new stable build. And I updated mine as well. I’ve followed these steps and have the ps1 games in a pops folder with all the files and everything on my thumb drive but they don’t show up in opl I’m not sure if it’s something about the latest version or maybe there’s a new process of using ps1 games from usb or something
OPL DB has popstarter support. If you use a different version of OPL that doesn't have the ps1 tab, then this video won't work for you and you got to follow the guide here: bitbucket.org/ShaolinAssassin/popstarter-documentation-stuff/wiki/usb-mode
I face a problem,
Whenever I enter a game it takes me back to the memory cards menu
I tried enterin from POPSTARTER.ELF from ulaunch , same result
Not sure why it does this, follow the popstarter guide and have all files in right locations?
Can I use another usb drive for ps1 games only? I have a spare 4gb usb drive and I don't want to mix the ps1 games with the ps2 games on my usb hdd. I have installed OPL (Funtuna) on mmc. PS2 games work great. Do I need to copy all folders from my usb hdd to the new usb drive? Except DVD and CD folders because they contain ps2 iso.
Yes PS1 and PS2 can live on two different USB drives, that is not an issue.
What's with the sharpness? PS1 games on component are way too pixelated. Is there any image smoothess with this method?
its not convertin the cue file to vcd. It says the message (error to many arguments.)
