Interesting. A soap/lime reaction is the basis for some waterproofing methods like tadelakt, but this is the first time I've seen anyone use it with clay. I am curious if there is any chemical reaction like there is with lime, or if the soap itself is the waterproof layer? In either case it seems like reapplying soap as needed over the years would be simple.
I had the same question so I looked it up. Black soap is soap made using the ash of plantain skins, palm tree leaves, cocoa pods and shea tree bark another version use the ash of camwood. It is then made like traditional soap mixing the alkali from the ash with fats and oils like coconut or palm to make soap. Any kind of natural "Wood ash" soap may be worth trying. Hope it helps.
