Thank you! I am an active cyclist for work and as a hobby,
Neck pain used to bother me quite a lot as I tend to have what I call 'turtle head' posture, with my head moving forward even while just standing straight.
Woke up with big neck pain after yesterday longer ride couple of exercises shown in the video, helped immediately to relief the pain. I will follow your instructions to strengthen my neck. Thank you once again, well done video!

After years of headaches from swimming with head above the water and recently cycling, I managed to self diagnose, some time ago already, the cause of them being neck strain. This is the first video I've ever seen on MTB related exercises that even mentioned this correlation. Thank you for explanation and exercises set.

Those were game changing tips thank you so much just what I was looking for. I was doing some of them along with you after completing a 50 mile MTB ride yesterday and noticed instant relief. Some of these I had been doing just because they felt good, but now I know why they felt good and I don't have to worry they're not doing any harm. Thanks again, subscribed!

Road cycling and latterly "gravel" have hammered the back of my neck so much I'm off them and on my HT 100mm travel Rockhopper for a while for some relief as it's way more upright. It's not the frame or fit , size is correct it's the excessive prolonged lean that road and gravel put you in, and wearing prescription glasses is what has made all this so much worse I need to tilt the head back to see through them otherwise I'm looking over them with the frames in the lower section and can't see anything clearly...If I didn't have old age failing eyesight I'd be seeing fine with my head and torso aligned but now I don't see any solution to this so am turning my gravel bike to an "all roads" bike with a massively raised and shortened stem to get the saddle and bars almost level(Can run 24psi 40mm tubeless tyres, helps with any jarring from the road) and will probably sell my road bike... I seriously now think that a FS XC bike like a Specialized Chisel but running a double groupset may be what I need....

This video was great! Thanks! Do you have any tips for hip pain? Lately I’ve also be having quadriceps tendonitis. Seems to get aggravated by riding. Trying to use orthotics again to see if it helps with the hip and knee stuff. I’m 34, too young for pain!!! But riding is my primary exercise 3-4 times per week.

Thanks for the feedback. And believe it or not, next installment of the Biking with Pain Series is hip pain. Be sure to subscribe and turn on the notifications so you don't miss it. I'll try to remember to put up a link as a reply here as well. Should have it up within about 1 week.

Mine came on a few hours after a steady downhill / trail ride. Can hardly move left to right or forwards or backwards. Dead centre of my neck hurts to swallow, cough, sneeze. Becoming very painful, catching me unaware and jarring or spasm is excruciating.

You should really consider going in for an evaluation for what you’re describing. Your situation may require additional treatment beyond the simple advice given in this video. Hope you get some relief soon!

Dr. J- In addition to minor neck pain, I'm also experiencing tightness/sore traps when riding my MTB. Any suggestions for traps? I will start to incorporate your recommended exercise. Love the videos, thank you for all that you do!
I'm going to bring my spacers up (10mm) to reduce reach & bring me up in a more upright position.

Over-extending your neck and excessively shrugging your shoulders are likely culprits. Try the exercises and bike fit tips and consider this in the process and see how it goes. Thanks for the kind feedback!

What can I do for the pain I feel in the middle of my butt muscles after riding the bike for 20 minutes. Is there a seat adjustment or seat that is better for reducing butt pain

As a fellow PT who loves mountain biking, I've seen people with "forward head posture" who have some kind of neck pain, but we both know it's misleading to say the research suggests the posture is causative, or even correlated, with neck pain. I love a lot of what you put out, but there's a lot to debate when making that claim, and I don't think you'd come out on top

    • @DrJMTB
      @DrJMTB  9 месяцев назад +1

I've never met quite the crew as the "posture doesn't affect neck or back pain" folks. It's so weird how therapists get so offended by this. Our profession is one of the few I know of that spends more time tearing each other down than advancing the profession. I could have thought of a thousand kinder ways to say what you had to say than, "I don't think you'd come out on top". I'm not interested in debating anyone who implies that I'm intentionally being misleading. I might be wrong about the topic (I'm not), but intentionally deceiving is not in my cards bro. Keep telling your patients it's fine to stay on their phones for 3 hours at a time, and I'll keep making constructive recommendations to help folks improve their posture in a meaningful way.

    Shoulder pain....
Left shoulder , looking from the top of my left shoulder pain at the 7 o'clock position when raising my arm or putting my arm in my shirt sleeve.... I think caused by handle bars crossing over to the right in a front wheel skid in mud at about 17 mph coming to an abrupt stop twice in a 5 minute time period.... No impact, just body weight and momentum through the left shoulder.... Any ideas or suggestions....

I noticed you have a Jeep Gladiator. Have you found a solution for the head restraint’s head forward orientation?

Putting in a lumbar support almost always resolves this issue as it will move your torso out slightly in relation to the headset, all while supporting your lower spine which then promotes better alignment in your upper spine.
