Thanks Donna, I appreciate that. If I don't feel I have useful or well grounded things to say, I don't make a video. My opinions or viewpoints expressed might at times be wrong... but they are NOT without careful thought before making a video. I have also tried to mostly focus on topics that were not "dated". Meaning they will still be useful several years into the future.
This is also approximately what I have been doing. I have started to deviate into buying singles to bulk up my playable collection as they pertain to specific decks I am trying to build. Love this channel so far - stumbled across you looking for tips on organizing.
Probably 5-6 years ago I put together a goofy take a bunch of turns/make your opponents draw their whole library deck. Pay a dollar each for the Power Artifacts and I think 5 for the beta Basalt Monoliths. Afterwards I thought is should by 20 of these power artifacts. Never did though. Now I can’t afford too.
I've started trying to pick up sets of cards that I think will be broken, unfortunately most of the time it's a swing and a miss. I try to pick up enough to help support my habit and build new decks. Thanks for sharing your methods
There are times where I swing and miss for 15 years... then suddenly I'm proven right. I had Tabernacle of Pendrell Vales back in 2001 because I thought they were very under appreciated but it took like 15 years of MTG being out before people figured it out. I STILL SAY Standstill is one of the most underrated cards out there. It's popular in one major deck and it's as if people just stopped TRYING to use it in other decks. But if what you have on the table is better than your opponent... drop a Standstill. If he stops playing spells... great! Or if he does and you draw 3... great! You don't need the entire "Landstill" deck strat... just be in the lead on the board.
I remember how I dumped my Magic lot in the dumpster. yes, I was that stupid. But I didn't even have friends who played MtG anymore. After Mirrodin/Kamigawa all my friends quit and it looked like Magic was going to die. I remember how I threw the cards into the dumpster and looked at them and thought, "don't you want to keep at least one card? Maybe it's worth a lot in 10 years." I grabbed a random card, it was an Aether Vial. Then I thought to myself that I quit Magic for exectly that reason, I wanted to become an adult and stop daydreaming about things that will never happen. Now I'm sitting here, watching videos while I sort my binder. I am 27 years old and figured it out: becoming an adult is a lie and throwing your cards away is the ost stupid thing you could ever possibly do.
I have been collecting Alpha through The Dark for a few years now and it is definitely a race to get the cards you want before they spike in price. I love Old School Magic.
You definitely started scrambling earlier than I did for Old School, good job having that foresight. But yeah, get'em quick before they cost a fortune! Because Old School is rad!
I love love love CE and ICE cards and I'm fully in support of them being Legal for Tournament play. They are absolutely beautiful! I had a chance like 3 years ago to buy a full set of CE still in the box (not sealed, but all there) for $800 and I didn't do it. I regret that so much now!
I buy cards the exact same way, just at a lower level. I try to speculate, like recently i did well with scrying sheets. I cant really get into alpha and beta, but ive been picking up the dark and some revised. Also reserved list ice age and mirage etc. Like you ive been playing since 94 but unfortunatly i sold my entire collection when i was 13 and lost all my OG duals and wheels and everything else that has skyrocketed since. Fortunatlyi have the knowledge of the game enough to know whats good so speculating is a bit easier.
Great insight! I'm just starting to look into oldschool 93/94 and am trying out some of your budget decks! I definitely feel the desire to buy into it before the spikes, but looking long-term, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get reserved list as the prices keep getting higher =/ Anyway, keep up the great videos! :)
In my experience for the newer sets it takes about 6 booster boxes to make one whole set which is not even close to 4 of each. I also have been buying up tons of Alpha and Beta NM cards, but mostly I do it from private parties rater than a dealer just because of the huge price mark up. Just yesterday I picked up a Beta NM Time Vault for roughly the same price as a UNL one that way. Old School players are already starting to cause the prices on Old School cards to sky rocket.
Definitely yes! Old School players are certainly driving up prices on original cards. It's such a fun format, and it's so nice to know money you spend there is not likely to be inflated away via reprints. I would buy from private parties more often if I could, but there really does not seem to be a large "old card" market here in Houston TX. The best deals I get is from Ebay and from the High End Magic Facebook group. Sounds like you got a great deal on the Time Vault!
Cody Niles not to the extent I was expecting it to be broken. I was expecting it to go big in Legacy, Modern, Commander, as well as Standard. But it didn’t and you can see that reflected in the price. www.mtgprice.com/sets/Oath_of_the_Gatewatch/Sylvan_Advocate
Buy by the case I usually get them for 80$ and 2 cases will get you 4 to 6 mythics each depending on foils, 8 to 10 rares each depending on foils then about 128 plus of uncommons then about 300 of Commons. Then you can sell playsets of Commons for 1$ plus 2 shipping. Uncommons non money for 2$ for playset plus 2$ shipping. Then extra rares and mythics for money. Usually I get a case for 500$ and if I sell everything I usually make 1000 to 1300$ but since hour of devastion it has not worked.
lol no no, I do that all day long as I write code too. It's one of the ways I'm odd... it just makes me feel better to jiggle my leg. Back in my Track and Field days (High School and College) it helped get the calf muscle exercised :)
Edwin the Magic Engineer I buy stocks for dividend payout I do not care about the daily trading price accept when I buy with half my quarterly dividends and interest payments. For the most part I buy and hold you only lose if you sell well price falls! To be honest unless I bought you with in the last year not to worried i mean most of my stocks I have had since 1994 have split, also if I am buying the stock even if it does tank won't worry because hopefully in 90 days or less can buy more dirt cheap.
Thanks for your videos. I really like your topics and style. No gimmicks, just honest thoughts.

Sounds like you're doing it right. Buying cards that will continue to get reprinted low and turning them into reserved list.

Thanks for the kind feedback Mathew, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
As usual a very Edwin video, love it. Keep up the good work.
Good video. What are your thoughts on collectors edition cards for old school? They are legal in eternal central rules and look great.

What do you mean no one has broken sylvan advocate? Dude was a standard all-star for a good year.

Joe Cariati Thanks Joe
Trading up!
That would be Mishra's Bauble from Coldsnap, not Urza's Bauble. I'll take a free box of HoD. LOL.
Nice
Your legs are shaking you are nervous :)

Thanks for the video. Wow, what event did you run in college? Which college?
Sorry, which comment of mine is this question about? Was I talking about Track and Field? Or Magic Tournaments?
Really a coder issue :) Specially when you're stuck into something :P As always, a good video, by the way! Cheers! @foodbylucas
LOL so true, so true. I'm doing it right now at work while I try to figure out this BIOS issue.
I was expecting a different way to buy boxes, lol
There was! I buy them from Rudy at 79.99 each. That is WAY less than my LGS who charges me 140 for the same box, before taxes!
$140! No wonder Rudy is so popular
don’t you just throw money at wizards and they show you the secret of their power?
Firefore TCG’s lol
Investment buy stocks and bonds
Psychozen 71 generally yeah, but at this exact moment I believe we are at the peak of a stock, bond, and real estate bubble.
