It was like being at a dinner party. Often when play was boring as watching paint dry he would lead the story telling and then just call the ball by ball play incidentally - Golden voice.
I watched him at Old Trafford in '85 or '86, I think.(Aussies or Indians). He was hopeless. Dropped a sitter right in front of us at the Warwick Road End. Very sheepish because it was off Ian Botham's bowling. Lots of double teapots from the other fielders. Gooch quite vocal.
