Good explanations! You reminded me of an old gardener's adage: the first year they (trees) sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap. Definitely applies here.
Nigel pulls a stick out of year 1 pots and proceeds to chop 3/4 the roots away and then proceeds to whack 1/2 the guava tree without even sweating it. Meanwhile, I try and keep my plants alive. You’ve got major skills thanks for sharing your talents.

Hello 😊I’m a new Bonsai freak ( Christmas present start box got me hooked ) 🤣 You are great . Calm easy to follow , your explaining everything with passion / love for your Bonsai .
I too grow many many bonsai from seed. I love you argument on comparing a bonsai to a painting - and not wanting to paint someone else's painting, must remember it the next time I'm speaking to my students about propagation and growing their collections; with your permission of course. :)
Hi Nigel, I finally managed to watch your full video without any interruptions today. My last few attempts were jinxed, with something always interrupting my watch time. Nice to see all the parts coming together for a great playlist 👍. You are right about not wanting to create a painting by copying someone else's painting or artwork. When i see bonsai experts working on trees that they bought either as mature bonsai or as prebonsai (including some japanese experts), i feel that they are not starting with a clean canvas.
They either bought a crude painting or a great painting and refined it further by painting over it and this for me creates a situation where I do not know how much credit can i give to the current owner of a great bonsai tree, since i do not know the contributions made towards the tree's development by various individuals involved. On the other hand, a collected plant or a tree nursery plant would be the equivalent of a canvas with dotted lines printed on it as a drawing guide. A bonsai from seed would be the only clean canvas actually :-)
Very well said Vinny, my wife calls some bonsai artists "hair stylists" They don't grow their own trees, they just style the tree like a person who gets a trim and a perm at a hair salon!
25 year's it's a long time for your ficus. it's quite exciting. thanks for the seedling tutorial, it will be helpful for us. I have some guava tree few months old. i was thinking to do something now. but after seeing your this video I Chang my mind. and decided to let them grow for 1 year. although my bonsai journey is only 10 month old.
Well Nigel, I found your channel back at the start of October 2017 and I've caught up on every single video! I must admit, I'm a bit sad I have no more new videos to watch! But thank you for the many hours of entertainment and information, and as always, can't wait for the next video!
Good evening Nigel, I've just watched your three segment of " how to grow a bonsai from seed". Thank you for such a wonderful and concise explanation. I'll be waiting for part 4. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you so much Nigel. I was exactly looking for such insights. I just planted few ficus religiosa seeds and I am planning to keep them indoors. I will use these tips in the upcoming years. :-) Waiting for part 4.
These three videos saved me I got all the answers I need :) Thank you very much :) I will go on now just enjoy your videos and look at my seedling having their first year not in perfect bonsai ground and year two I will go get some bonsai soil and bonsai pots :)
Those are developing very well! Third year Guava tree looks great. You could probably just go buy one that size at a nursery, but then you wouldn't get to guide the root growth, branches, and see how it responds over the years, like you said! I've got some live oak acorns and pine seeds I just put in soft moist soil to stratify over the next couple months! We'll see!
Sounds good Joseph, I hope your seedlings grow well. I've never seen a Guava tree for sale in this part of the world, it's too bad, they are such a nice tree!
I have a small assortment of bonsai that I grew from seed, and about to start another batch! a trick I learned to have them start with interesting trunks naturally is to put some mulch over them before the seeds sprout. Hey there! This video was exactly what i was looking for! I currently have 2, Maples that I started from seed last year. So from what I learned in the video, I should now cut the tap route. Do you have e any advice on how much to remove? And again thank you so much for all the info.!!
Hi Nigel! I really enjoy your videos...Unfortunately, it is like reading a very good book series...hard to wait for the next installment. I am currently waiting for the next update on the Poincettia. I have two from cuttings that I am putting through the darkness to light daily cycle to promote the color change. Your videos are the best!
Thank you James, I'll be working on the Poinsettia cutting soon as it has grow tall over the summer. My Hibiscus is about to flower, I just noticed the flower bud today!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone I was inspired by this video, ive always love the art of bonsai but ove never tried it. So bought some seed. I would like to know if your intrested in some of the seed I bought so I can send them to you. These are the seeds, chinese Wisteria, dragon tree, poinciana, and azalea. It was a bit of a spur of the moment and didn't take into consideration leaf such.
Hello Nigel, I'm Kiir, from Singapore, a tropical climate island. I've been following your channel for quite a while because I like how you naturally grow the style of your trees without using wires etc. Last September, I root prune my fukien tea tree I've got because it had about 2 thick tap root, I suppose, that's what they are and fine roots. I've kinda aggressively prune one tap root and left the other pruned just a little bit. In the process, a lot of the fine root hairs that were attached got accidentally trimmed off too and I'm left with a weak root structure now. So I'm really worried about the health of my tree. It's been about 2months since. Initially, after the process the leaves started drooping and doesn't look lively. After about a month, I tried using a very mild fertilizer ratio to water it and the leaves started showing more health and even sprouted a few new leaves. But the new leaves never grow much bigger. However, now the leaves are suddenly turning brown, drying out and quite a quantity has fallen off. I guess, the tree has been struggling real hard to survive in it's not so so good health. Currently, I do not know exactly what I should do to help it regain vigour. Do you have any ideas or suggestions in your years of experience to provide me with so I can help the tree grow well? I'm real anxious to see the tree in it's current state. Any advice will be of great comfort to me and greatly appreciated. It's my very first bonsai, so it's got some sentimental value to me..
I would place a clear plastic bag over the tree, be sure to poke some ventilation holes in the bag. Keep your in a bright position, but avoid direct sunlight. Don'r over water your tree when it has no leaves. Keep it warm and humid and hopefully the leaves and roots will start to grow back.
Hello Nigel, I was hoping you could help me with something. I'm a young bonsai beginner and i think I might have made a mistake on my first work. I've been growing a lemon, orange and apple tree from seed, and i decided to root prune them AND start the clip and grow process after only 2 years. Was the trunk clipping too early in your opinion? Will the base trunk stop growing? Thank you so much for the passion you show towards trees and nature, you're very uplifting!!
This was such a helpful video. Thank you a thousand times for making it. It really helped me with the care for my apple seedlings which just started their second year so I am crossing my fingers their tap roots are alright and they keep growing (I am already really attached to the little guys :-) ). I have yet to see all your videos so I do apologize if this topic has been brought up before, but do you have any tips for the good bonsai soil for fruit trees or if the usual mixture is enough? In any case, keep up this great work and I wish you and all your trees good health.
Hi, thank you for all the knowledge. Quick question, in year 1 its about watering and fertilizing.. at what age is good to start fertilizing? Or how long after they sprout is it ok to start fertilizing?
Nigel, I am wanting to start a bonsai from seed. I'm thinking something tropical so it can be kept indoors in winter. Can you suggest any good species for a small size bonsai?
Thanks for the interesting videos! I have a question, see if you can help me. In the second year you plant the trees all together. Won't the roots going to mix? I have 5 apple trees, 1 month old, in a pot and I don't know when I have to separate them.
Quick question, when would year 1 begin? Would year 1 start as you plant them for stratification or as they start to grow after winter? Would year 2 begin 1 year after you planted them or 1 year after they started growing?
This is exactly whatci needed to know. I have 4 seedling, very small. Sat in coconut. Guess they need to establish more before moving them to new mix. Hope that right.
Hi Nigel! I am starting growing a lemon tree from seed. How long should I let it grow before the first root trimming? Thank you so much you have inspired me to start my journey.
I would wait until the tree gets a woody stem and at least 6 leaves on top. This will take a year, maybe two. You can root prune and top prune at the same time and with good growing conditions, the tree will continue to grow!
Nigel, I have Cedar and Grey Birch seeds that I just sprouted a month ago. The seedlings are about an inch tall and are clumped in the compartments anywhere from 1 to 5 seedlings per inch and a half squared. When is the time to separate them into their own compartments or pots and how big of containers? Also, would I use a different soil other than the good bonsai soil (would I want organic matter involved, finer particles or other)? Thanks for the great uploads and knowledge shared.
I would carefully separate them now and try to disturb the roots as little as possible. They can go into any soil, as long as it drains well and you are careful with the watering. I would let them grow for this year untouched and then root prune lightly and re pot again next spring.
Hello my friend. My delonix regia is 2 months and they are groing great. When should i star fertalizing? Ill go find that vid on what fertalizer to use. Im sure you habe one. 😄
Hi Nigel, What you're doing is great and I am just about to begin my journey with bonsai. I am planning to start growing pomegranate and lemon tree. Would you say it is a good choice for start?
Yes, I find that growing the tropical type trees are great to start with. You don't have to deal with the crazy weather that the hardy trees get! I put mine out in the spring when the weather warms up and then in fall, back inside they go. You will need a sunny window to grow your trees in. Happy growing!
In growing an African Baobab tree from seed, it grows long, tall and skinny. At what point would you cut it to desired height or go by the process to transform it into a small/medium sized bonsai?
Hi Nigel, what if your tap root only has feeder or support roots after the point of curl? I was repotting my peach seedling after a year or so of it sprouted and i noticed there were no roots until after the tap root began to curl up. I made do with the situation and did the best radial establishment I could make. In a way, if it curls quite radial and untangled, would that be appropraite? I would imagine the nice radial curl of the tap root provides a good stand aid in the soil as well.
They will be coming indoors soon, as they can't take a lot of cold like some of the other trees. Hopefully they will make it through the winter this time! I'll have to select some in spring to develop for the up coming summer.
Thank you Michael, I was hoping to finish the series with part three, but I didn't want the video to get too long and technical. Part four will be coming.
I don't have a lot of experience with the Eucalyptus tree, I've only killed one of them! I would re pot and root prune in spring as the weather is getting nice. I would try and sort the roots out the best you can using caution at first. Root prune lightly the first re potting, then a couple of years later, see how the tree reacted to the root pruning and adjust your techniques accordingly. Check out Sam's channel, he has some growing! ruclips.net/channel/UCeG4j3ikpP76jME7EKmfetg
When do you start fertilizing a seedling? I've germinated sequoia sempervivens in vermiculite and they've popped out a week ago. Thinking about when to put them in some soil en when they're going to need more than just water?
I start to fertilize right away, I use a very, very dilute mix of 20-20-20 mixed with a lot of water. I put about a pinch of the powdered fertilizer in my 2 liter watering can and water and fertilize daily. Too much fertilizer can harm the new root tips, so you want a very dilute mix.
Hello Nigel, greetings from Mexico. I have a question: I'm also growing a bunch of tropical seeds and some of them are in year two of the process. I not sure which season is the right one to prune the tap root, should I do it on fall or winter? Or is it best to do it in early spring when the growth is starting? Thank you for all your insight, your videos are really helpful.
The best time is when the tree is about to go through a growing phase, this can be spring for most trees, but for some tropical's, early to mid summer is best. As long as the tree has nice warm humid conditions for recovery they should grow fine without the tap root.
Hi Nigel, I've enjoyed watching your videos over the past year and it inspired me to start thinking about doing bonsai (and working on my patience haha). So I had harvested some Eastern Redbud seedlings from the yard last fall, and overwintered them in a slightly cooler than room temperature sun room. In the spring, one pushed out pretty vigorous leaves and then after I watered it, the leaves wilted and the seedling appears to have died. A month or two later, the second seedling is pushing out tiny leaves, much more tentatively than the first seedling. I'm afraid to water it because of what happened with the first one. But I'm also thinking about doing your Year 2 root trimming and transferring to bonsai soil with it. Do you think it would survive? Thanks for reading!
Excellent as always ! i'm actually growing a serissa's cutting, about one year ago, i will try "year 2" of your Schedule. I'm thinking air pot technology, any experience in this area ?
The pots for air pruning the roots works very well. You will still need to go in and prune the roots for balance and order, but they are a great way to start a good root system!
I have an opportunity for a Ficus Lyrata about 3 ft tall with a trunk that divides into 2 about 2 ft up. Healthy looking material. What can you recommend to me if I wanted to begin the bonsai process? I'm not sure what the roots look like yet. I will update. If it's possible to make a good bonsai from it I will purchase. I appreciate the continuous advice. You're a great educator. Thank you.
I always start with the roots, then the trunk and finally the branches. The Ficus Lyrata takes a lot of growth to thicken the trunk. I would get the roots sorted out first, then let the tree grow to regain vigor. The top of the tree can be pruned back when you get the trunk to the desired thickness. After this the branch work can begin.
So the thickness of the trunk is made by allowing the tree to grow tall and then pruning back hard? How many seasons without pruning generally? I had thought that making hard cuts back before the growing season was the way to develop the thick trunk.
Well, that explained why I couldn’t find it! Looking forward to it then! Thank you so much for all the time you put into this and all the knowledge you share with us! :)
thanks for the tutorial. I'm growing figs and pomegranates from seeds. They're about 2 inches high now. What kind of fertilizer do you use? Thanksgiving week here in the US. I'm thankful I found your videos. As a bonsai beginner, it's helpful to start with good instructions.

Excellent work, Nigel. I wanted to ask about the soil you used for those ash trees after repotting. Can you tell components of the soil. Here in Pakistan, it is very difficult to find bonsai soil, or if you get it, it is very expensive. I have started bonsai-ing for about a year now and have hunted many bonsais along with growing new ones from seed and from nursery stock, I like your videos. Regards. Please answer soon...............
My soil is 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. There are many different ingredients that will work well if you can't find these in your area. Check Mammal bonsai, he has some good videos on making soil.
could you do a video where you tell how to water bonsai trees from seed and how to let it grow from seed. becuase I did water them and let them grow but they died

Thank you James, I'll be working on the Poinsettia cutting soon as it has grow tall over the summer. My Hibiscus is about to flower, I just noticed the flower bud today!
Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful. What fertilizer do you use?
I use Plant Prod 20-20-20, here is a video on this....

Already my favorite, can't wait for the next part
Thanks Jonattan! It will be coming soon!
Nigel Saunders, an advice coming from you is a relief. Thank you so much. I'll immediately try that and keep the tree warm and humid..
As usual a nicely done explanation
Thank you Ahmed!
Any bonsai soil is good for fruit trees, here is how I fertilize mine....

I hope your Apple trees grow well!
Hi, thank you for all the knowledge. Quick question, in year 1 its about watering and fertilizing.. at what age is good to start fertilizing? Or how long after they sprout is it ok to start fertilizing?
Cool video love your energy
This is exactly what i have been looking for. Thanks for the great advise!
Thank you, nice to hear!
Hi Nigel, is too early to put the seeds for stratification process now in august?
Quick question, when would year 1 begin? Would year 1 start as you plant them for stratification or as they start to grow after winter? Would year 2 begin 1 year after you planted them or 1 year after they started growing?
This is exactly whatci needed to know. I have 4 seedling, very small. Sat in coconut. Guess they need to establish more before moving them to new mix. Hope that right.
Thanks for great series Growing Bonsai from seeds ... Waiting for part 4 😂
Today At 5 Feb 2019 I just put some maple seeds in my fridge 😂 ...
Part 4 will be coming, I haven't forgotten about it, I still have part 3 on my white board as a reminder!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks Nigel Sir
I'll be February 6th
From seed videos are my favorite! but what kind of tree is the first one, that you've had for 25 years?
That is a Ficus microcarpa. I still remember it sprouting out of the soil!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone my trident maple sprouted recently and i feel so proud
Seed or Tree, you decide the Bonsai Journey my friend.
Thanks, good words of wisdom!
Thank you!
Hello my friend. My delonix regia is 2 months and they are groing great. When should i star fertalizing? Ill go find that vid on what fertalizer to use. Im sure you habe one. 😄
Here is a video on how I water and fertilize my trees...

I love watching trees slowly grow from seeds!
Excellent video, new tree for each year, great! :)
Thank you!
I generally prune about half of the tap root off, here is a video on this....

thank you sir....love it

I love your videos ! i am really exited about this brazilian guava tree (goiabeira) !
I think it will grow nicely this winter. Some of my trees grow even better inside than outside. They love the warmth and humidity of the plant room!
Really good explanations ! I was wondering : what about your Catalpa seedlings ?
Thx !
They will be coming indoors soon, as they can't take a lot of cold like some of the other trees. Hopefully they will make it through the winter this time! I'll have to select some in spring to develop for the up coming summer.
Great information Nigel. Thanks once again.
Thank you Michael, I was hoping to finish the series with part three, but I didn't want the video to get too long and technical. Part four will be coming.
Personally I enjoy your long detailed videos with minimal editing. Ive watched this video 3 times. looking forward to part 4
I have few Japanese maple seeds. I was to plant them but in unsure which direction the seeds should be sown. Plz suggest.
Hey Nigel, you have inspired me. How would you prune the roots of Eucalyptus after the first/second year?
Thanks Nigel.

@@TheBonsaiZone thanks Nigel. I'll give your suggestions a go.
Hi Nigel, how did your seeds turn out? Did most of them sprout?
You inspired me to go BONSAI! !
Very good Asif, happy growing!
Never mind! I went ahead and did it so this is one less youtube comment to deal with.
How often do you water your plants and what kind of fertelizer do you use?
Did you put in nursery pots before having that trunk?
Excellent work.
Thank you!
Hi, Nigel! I have been looking for part 4 of this serie without any luck. Did you do a part 4 and in that case, could you help me find it?
I never did get time to finish part 4, but it will be coming this winter!
Hello Vicki, happy thanksgiving! I use Plant Prod 20-20-20 with micro nutrients. Here is a link.....

Excellent work, Nigel. I wanted to ask about the soil you used for those ash trees after repotting. Can you tell components of the soil. Here in Pakistan, it is very difficult to find bonsai soil, or if you get it, it is very expensive. I have started bonsai-ing for about a year now and have hunted many bonsais along with growing new ones from seed and from nursery stock,
I like your videos.
Regards.
Please answer soon...............
My soil is 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. There are many different ingredients that will work well if you can't find these in your area. Check Mammal bonsai, he has some good videos on making soil.
Brilliant! Thanks Nigel!
Thanks for watching Ehsan!
could you do a video where you tell how to water bonsai trees from seed and how to let it grow from seed. becuase I did water them and let them grow but they died
Hi Nigel, I have a question. Can I airlayer a healthy hybiscus indoors in the fall? Thank you. Longtime fan.
I think if the tree gets sunlight from a bright window and it is watered and misted carefully, you will have success.
Well done
Improvement of your video making is nice to see
Try making more often
Maybe some time even start daily vlogs on the bonsai zone !!!!
Thank you Hamed, I' have so many trees to work on, and so many stories to tell!
What fertilizer you give and when? please have a video on Pest and Fertilizing plants
Thank you, here are some videos that touch on these topics.....
