Why is it that in US TV they call each other by their family name. It's really weird and certainly rude in most western countries, so why does US TV do this? I've even seen US TV where someone picks up the phone and says "Jones". How weird is that??
Nulanula It's called acting, don't take it so serious. In real life, professionals don't address each other like they do on t.v...and it's not rude of offensive, it's just acting. But if it troubles you so much about American t.v., then I suggest you send t.v. shows a letter or email asking why. And not all t.v. shows are like that. Also, it's for dramatic performance. We're not rude or disrespectful to our co-workers or our supervisors. It's just acting.
To add on, there is also the question of formality and a sign of emotional distance to the person. If we were sitting in a meeting, I wouldn't call you by your given name, I'd say "Well then Mr or Ms West what's your opinion on the situation?" Granted, in reality, this is only found more rarely anymore. I saw it all the time in the Army though.
