    Weird and random video or not, I love it man. Watching this on father's day, and it made me think of the times I got to hang out with Dad in his garage and work on random shit. It's my first father's day without him. He wasn't into motorcycles at all but he would have loved a project like this, if only because it would have been a chance for us to hang out and swear at inanimate objects while we sanded and grinded them to our will. Thanks for continuing to bring us along for this build. I'll keep watching every week and waiting to see this thing in it's final glory.

    Great vid as always, little tip, get a roll of emery cloth cut a long strip and pull it back and forth across the width of the fork leg and it will naturally follow the radius and get them scuffs out very fast and smooth and the shape will stay perfect. Stay well dude.

    Looks good Josh. Technique I have always used to minimize the hand sanding is course wheel (60 or 80), fine wheel and then I use a wire wheel. The use of the wire wheel really helps get at those little nicks and leaves a pretty smooth surface.

    Shady Tree. The best way I have found to get it all put together is to remove the tabs with a grinder then get it close, however leave it all a bit high. Then use a long file hand to bring it down to final height. The long face gives you a great guide. Then step through the sand paper and polishing.
    Took me awhile to figure it out, and yours is much better than my first attempt.

    Great video as always. One tip, for little work like lopping off those fender tabs, use a hacksaw. Hacksaws are slower and require more elbow grease, but you'll have much more fine control than a grinder with a cut off wheel. Hope this helps.

    I've done similar with old cast iron implements, corn grinders, cook pots, and drills, and everyone says "but you could have bought a new one for less than that!" Yes, and it would be a new one. The fun is in the restoring/cleaning/polishing/mending. No-one wants to look at a new pillar drill, but an 80 year-old one that works just fine, is way cooler.

    Fork legs look pretty damn good. One thing I've seen done for sanding round parts like those is cutting a section of pvc pipe to use as a sanding block so you get a nice flat finish.

  • @Viewofandrew
    @Viewofandrew 5 лет назад +5

    A steel rule would really help with grinding the forks. Lay it across like you would a level on a 2x4, mark the high spots and grind away. Also the aluminum is extremely soft and clogs up grinding wheels. That’s the reason for the blow out. Non ferrous metals are best with grinders. Ok I’m done being “preachy”. I love your videos Man!

    The thick grinding wheels aren't scary, Josh. They work nice. Those thin ones though, they dont have the nickname death wheels for nothing... and yes, when they start coming apart like that one you had... it's time to replace it.
    That aside, the fork tubes look nice, well worth the effort, and those little imperfections prove it was hand done. Can't wait to see the finished product!

  • @vincentmorelli4549
    @vincentmorelli4549 5 лет назад +1

    When you use a grinding wheel with aluminum it destroys your blade faster. Aluminum has a lower melting point then steel and the aluminum builds up on the wheel. This throws off the balance of the disk which causes it to fly apart. PS: I'm loving the build. Keep up the great work.

  • @pdxmix
    @pdxmix 5 лет назад

    Hi Josh!
    I'm not much of a commenter, so while I'm here let me first say; I'm really loving your content and this is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Thanks for what you do!
    With regard to cutting and polishing; I'm in the metal working business and want to let you know that there are special discs for aluminum. When you use steel discs on aluminum they get clogged up and can come apart. Which can be dangerous. Your broken up disc is either from that, or from plunging deeper than you need to. Try to minimize wear on the sides of the disc by using minimal depth when possible. If you're doing a bit of aluminum, grab an aluminum disc. They're relatively cheap at any big hardware store.
    And you can get some Meguiars ultimate compound from any big retail or parts store to replace the toothpaste. People use toothpaste on stuff because it has some grit, and most people have it on hand. But a decent polishing compound is better, much easier, and cheaper in the long run. Most comes in different grits. Meguiars ultimate compound basically starts as a heavy grit, and then breaks down to a light grit during use. So it's a good product to have it the garage.
    Again, I love and appreciate the content, and it motivates me to see your motivation. Great work! And great job not getting bogged down by the little details as you learn!

  • @tezocsdad
    @tezocsdad 5 лет назад

    Secret to polishing you want all the scratches to run the same direction . The smaller the width the shinier the surface becomes . No spark no grind . Because aluminum is a softer metal it usually clogs up grinding wheels. It's better to use a hacksaw and a belt sander. Belt sander will actually start the polishing process since the belt moves in one direction instead of an orbital. And I learned the hard way .

  • @willyc7873

    Nice work on the forks... I love watching you struggle and end up with little imperfections because its real and not some phony video where everything turns out amazing with some guy grinding with a nail file and polishing with a damp sea sponge... and for the record, I had a choice between going out riding my bike or watching your video... and I chose you... doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy? 😂

    Hey josh I don’t know if anyone commented this but the cutting wheel you had been using is probably for steel they make aluminum cutting discs. What happens is the aluminum being a soft metal will get stuck in the surface of the disc and tear it up. On a separate note beautiful polish job man
