The top-knot is a something that indicates status. Nobles in the fire nation have more elaborate headpieces. When Zuko and Iroh cut them off they are removing their last connection to the fire nation. If you notice before Zuko was burned he had a full head of hair but after he was mostly shaved. it showed he was banished but was still a part of fire nation. Now that he is no longer a part of the fire nation his hair will change.
Yeah, the Fire Nation took a lot of inspiration from real life feudal Japan. The topknot was a status symbol among samurai, and they'd only cut it off if they wanted to give up their upper-class status and become a peasant or priest.
Also Zukos hairstyle is in relation to ancient chinese culture in that since they believe every part of the human body is a sacred gift from your parents that cutting hair back in ancient times was taboo and considered to be shameful, such as the shame of being banished like Zuko
azula is only 14, yes! but she’s also a full on villain! she’s also incredibly smart and definitely the most complex villain in this show! an amazingly written character and her dynamic with zuko is so so interesting!!
Well everyone says that she is 14... But in episode 8 Iroh said that Zuko is 16 years old. And Azula is only a year younger. So basicly she is 15, no 14.
Honestly, she's so well written that I'm still not sure how she exactly was. Spoilers: Either she was born a Sociopath, and her mother seeing the evil in her didn't really change anything, or she was just close to her father, and her mother calling her heartless made her accept this heartlessness because it is easier to accept the traits of the Fire Nation Royalty/Army than to have a heart, then at least her father accepts her. And I still don't know what of the two is really true, but either way, it's sad, especially since i can see part of the dynamic (perfectionism with mental health problems on one end and anger issues with a troubled past with physical and mental scars) in my brother and me, but we are actually quite close.
No I genuinely just love her. Low key had a crush since 12 years old watching this for the first time. She needs her own redemption arc in a future show. If they give her a redemption arc in a comic. I will be livid.
The saddest part was when Aang gets emotional and is begging the general to stop when he threatens Katara. “I’m trying, I’m trying...” with tears in his eyes. It gets to me every time. 🥺
For real, that scene doesn't get enough credit for how scary it is, from both their perspectives. We don't see Katara scare easily that often but she is fucking *terrified* here, it's unnerving. Not to mention at this point in the show it's probably the closest Aang's come to losing someone he loves since he learned about the Air Nomad genocide 😔
Isnt Azula just year younger than Zuko? And yes, kinda spoiler here. For example in "Zuko alone" baby Azula looks just as old as he is. (Btw when i watched the show first time i thought that they are twins). But she does not looks like 2 years younger. They both seem like 7 years. @@sabotuerelthendo2578 stfu lol she's 14 here, she dresses and puts on an old person look so that she would be intimidating to people to please her dad
That scene when they cut off their hair...well their top-knots would be a mark of their noble status. In Japan, to cut off one’s top knot was a symbol of great dishonor, and in Avatar it is the same. Adding to this the fact is that Zuko and Iroh need to change themselves physically after realizing that their homeland has branded them traitors and it’s a hard moment for both men so that scene symbolic of them cutting themselves off from their old lives and starting anew and basically denouncing their rank in the Firenation.
I think Zuko doesn't exactly resent Aang, but he probably does associate him with feeling incompetent and powerless and having to prove himself, all of which are things firstly acquired in the dynamic between his father, his sister and him. But I don't really think he blames Aang for anything. Azula's 14, just like Katara. Azula is actually a very good antagonist for the show and she isn't even the main antagonist. She's actually a threat. Like, I'm pretty sure she is one of the most powerful benders in the show. At least, at the start. I'm not sure if she's more powerful than Ozai because I haven't seen enough of his bending but one weakness Azula has is that she's fully under her father's control, wanting his love. That's one sad part. Azula is a 14-year-old kid wanting love and attention from her father, similar to Zuko. Although that really doesn't justify her actions. A lot of her actions throughout the show are actually monstrous, even if she does it as an attempt to gain her father's love.
Spoiler Alert :::::: Azula currently at 14 years old isnt stronger than Ozai. But even at 14 Azulas fire burns hotter than Ozais and is the only fire bender able to create blue fire. So she would eventually become stronger than Ozai and would have been the strongest firebender ever but you know what happens to her at the end. Sad how Ozai ruined the life of the strongest firebender they would ever have had.
Did you notice that Azula has blue fire? Her flames are blue due to her precision and mastery of the element. Also this season is going to give you ALL kind of emotions :D

16:00 this is one of the deepest moments in ATLA. Top knot or ponytail is sacred for the Fire Nation and only you can touch it (except when you have someone to brush your hair and someone to make that top knot.. like.. royal family, lol)They basically gave up everything
Rewatching Azula’s debut this episode is honestly *mind boggling* to me, especially when she came in contact with Zuko. Like, she knew of Zuko’s insecurities about their father and exploited them to try to capture him. Then when her plan was accidentally revealed (that captain got BODIED later, just saying-), she took the opportunity to brutally throw the harsh reality of how their father viewed Zuko, as a *”miserable failure,”* into his face. *Her plan was cruel, calculating, really fucked up...* *It was precisely Azula~* Also, I personally feel like this episodes content with the Gaang is massively overlooked by Fire Nation shenanigans and Ruko’s explanation of the Avatar State. It kind of expands on the subject of *The Individual v. The World* that was touched in *The Storm.* The war had been going on for *100 years,* which makes for a LARGE body count. So the fact that the Gaang had discourse on how to handle the general’s plan was just really interesting to me, is all~
And the warning to Aang about being killed in the Avatar State not only a frightening piece of forshadowing, but also a PHENOMENAL limitation for a "power boost" if I've ever seen one in a story. Not only is it a limitation for justifying him not "just going berserk and win every battle" like an action hero (wich Aang ovbiously is not), and would also cause him great trauma and distress, but also is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS TO HIMSELF in a completely undeniable way. It's put very clear that the Avatar State is meant to be a Last Resort Only... or not only Aang could end up killing many or dead, but the Avatar entirely would die along with him. That's fucking amazing writing.
At 14:10 the girl on the right asks “the lightning is that like healing for fire” and her friend quickly responds “yea yea yea” lmao! The girl in the glasses is so into the show at the moment, she politely told her friend to “shut up” so she can listen and focus on the show haha
*At that point, Zuko was yearning for a shortcut. It has been years of his struggles, and it is once again hitting him hard how long it's been. Azula played into that. It wasn't her most intricate manipulation tactic, it was simple. Coz she knew he'd be so full of delusional hope he won't see through her flawed statements. Except for Uncle Iroh. Coz he knows his Brother more realistically than Zuko knows his own Sister*
That whole conversation in the beginning about the beauty of Sokka and Katara's relationship and sibling dynamic is spot on, and unfortunately cements my annoyance at the recent announcement/rumor that in the Netflix live-action adaptation, they are changing Katara's age to be older (16) while keeping Sokka and Aang's age the same. Imho, it completely changes that very beloved dynamic they have.
The psychology of Azula is pretty interesting. Once you're done with reviewing I recommend looking at one of the various RUclips videos examining who she is and how she became that way.
Azula is one of the greatest villains in entertainment history. Deadly skill, dangerous intellect, master manipulator. Y’all are gonna love to hate her!
Zuko's hair is SO important for his character development. This was a HUGE moment. Pay attention to his hair throughout the series. I'm not going to spoil much but you aren't ready for book 2&3 :) It is truly amazing.
My cousin and I were HUGE fans of this show! He missed this episode, so I recapped it to him. He was shocked (heh heh) when I told him about lightning-bending
The top-knot is a sign of honor in the Fire Nation. After becoming fugitives of the Fire Nation, Zuko and Iroh cut off their top-knots and threw them into a creek to symbolize their rejection of their homeland and the beginning of their true exile.
Loved this video❤️!! Finally you saw lightning bend, yes it’s like healing properties for water benders, but maybe you may wonder why lightning? Well let’s say that lightning is another form of heat, so that’s why only a few amount of firebenders can lightningbend. Can’t wait for you girls to react to episode 6
you're right about the animation being a little different from the first season! it's less cartoony and more smooth in general, an overall more mature look
The hair is very important to the people of the Fire Nation especially the royal family That top pony tail is a symbol of the royal family like if you have that specific ponytail then your part of the royal family or your part of the Fire Nation (like a citizen) (no one tuches you're hair, for that is a show of great dishonor) So Zuko like shaved his hair because he was dishonored by this father (no honor = no hair) but he was still part of the Fore Nation and the royal family but him cutting that off to now symbolizes his and Iroh's renouncement from their Nation and family which would obviously be very difficult for Zuko Now he's basically no one just wondering the Earth Kingdom Men without identities
love your reactions to this series. it truly is one of the best series to ever be made. Really wish we could get more episodes per week. It is really entertaining to see you guys experience this for the first time :D
It turns out you really understood the Avatar state by last episode. Except for dont die in the avatar state/reincarnation thing. But who knew about that? And you're learning about being the avatar at the same time Aang is. Thank goodness for Roku I love everything about this book. And you're right, the animation is changing its going to do a lot of that. Mostly just to make them less kid like. But they definitely feel like teenagers now. Zuka is 16/17, Sokka is 15/16, Katara 14/15, and Aang is 13/14.
Cutting the hair has a deep meaning. Up until this point, even though they were a symbol of failure (Iroh) and complete disgrace(zuko) to the fire nation, they were still active members of it, as they had their own fire nation ship and crew and also as we could see when Zhao invited Iroh to take part in an official war operation and also when we see zuko is still recognised as the prince in a few occasions. After Ozai gives Azula the task to take care of Iroh an Zuko their status changed and they are now wanted enemies of the fire nation. After realising this, they abandon the royal fire nation tradition to have the ponytail as an acknowledgement that their ties to the fire nation have been officially broken. It also serves as a means of infiltrating the earth kingdom as common travelers and it also has a deeper meaning of a new phase in their lives, especially zuko, who now has taken away from him the possibility of recovering the most important things in his life, which are the throne, his father's recognition and his honor to his country, as he states himself in this episode. Their hair will be the same as Jeong Jeong's as now they are also, like he was, deserters.
Girls. Don't read the comments of the ATLA video's. People are (soft) spoiling things all over the place. And many don't seem to care if you read their comments. Or get some mods at least if you do want to read everything.
Chinese philosophy, the ponytail is basically resembles who they r, where they come from. It's like their birthright/badge of honor and if you or someone else cut off the ponytail, you are disowned/revoking ur birthright/or betraying ur country
I would love to see your reactions to the Dragon Prince. I think it was made by some of the same people who made Avatar. Also, Castlevania, as well as The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian and The Outpost are also shows worth reacting to (IMO). (The Dragon Prince and Castlevania are on Netflix.)

now that we’ve reached this point I would like to recommend to skip the previously on intro that appears on the next episodes, it kinda spoils you about the episode great episode btw!!
I don't know exactly what it means, but I DO know that certain styles of hair had symbolic value in ancient (and possibly modern) Japanese culture. The Fire Nation has roots in Japanese style, so the cutting of the ponytail and bun DOES have a deeper meaning.
lightning bending is a “sub-style” of firebending, like healing is for waterbending that’s right! and just like katara is a very special and talented water bender, azula is very special and talented firebender. she’s the definition of a prodigy! she can lightning bend and also her fire is blue instead of red/orange. she’s the first and only fire bender we see having blue fire which is very telling!!
Season 2 takes ATLA to another level and i fee like you guys are going to hate/love Azula she’s just such a great character you hate her but can’t help being entertained by her.
I feel like a lot of people don't really consider the general's position. Obviously what he did during this episode wasn't an absolutely positive thing but you have to remember they've been at war 100 years and people have lost thousands of friends and family to it. If the only reason it doesn't end in a week is because of some tradition that's expected to play out in peace time of course people wouldn't care and they would be pushed to rash action.
Lightening is a bending power that Zuko can learn but it takes a level of concentration and determination that he doesn’t have at this point. Such a good reaction video today! 💙

@@wandanemer2630 *The best* goddamn foreshadowing, *the best* goddamn writing; *we do not deserve this show-*
No one:
Literally No one at all:
These girls: BABYYY!! MY BOYYYY!!
Hell even Iroh too lol, I'm not complaining I just love it so much 😁
At 14:10 the girl on the right asks “the lightning is that like healing for fire” and her friend quickly responds “yea yea yea” lmao! The girl in the glasses is so into the show at the moment, she politely told her friend to “shut up” so she can listen and focus on the show haha
Agreed I always miss her name because of how fast she says it but I'm sure that when we are in the zone we're all like "STFU!"
You met the best animated female villain ever
*At that point, Zuko was yearning for a shortcut. It has been years of his struggles, and it is once again hitting him hard how long it's been. Azula played into that. It wasn't her most intricate manipulation tactic, it was simple. Coz she knew he'd be so full of delusional hope he won't see through her flawed statements. Except for Uncle Iroh. Coz he knows his Brother more realistically than Zuko knows his own Sister*
Nobody:
Literally nobody:
Milena at 16:22 : “I’m fucking babies!!”
This season was really amazing y’all are in for a ride
That whole conversation in the beginning about the beauty of Sokka and Katara's relationship and sibling dynamic is spot on, and unfortunately cements my annoyance at the recent announcement/rumor that in the Netflix live-action adaptation, they are changing Katara's age to be older (16) while keeping Sokka and Aang's age the same. Imho, it completely changes that very beloved dynamic they have.
The psychology of Azula is pretty interesting. Once you're done with reviewing I recommend looking at one of the various RUclips videos examining who she is and how she became that way.
Awesome how Azula fights Zuko as he was nothing, she not even uses bending until the very end.
That's a deliverate way of insulting him, also. As if saying "You're so weak you're not even worth fighting seriously".
Azula is one of the greatest villains in entertainment history. Deadly skill, dangerous intellect, master manipulator. Y’all are gonna love to hate her!
Not only that but the combination of good looks, charm, intelligence and power combined in one makes a very deadly villain. She's my favorite.
16:20 You WHAT BABIES !? LMAOAOAOAOAO
Zuko's hair is SO important for his character development. This was a HUGE moment. Pay attention to his hair throughout the series. I'm not going to spoil much but you aren't ready for book 2&3 :) It is truly amazing.
I get chills when i see you guys react to the possibility of the avatar cycle being broken
If I had to write a list of TV’s top 5 female villains, she’d be on the it. Sometimes she makes me want to hide behind the couch
Zaheer and Azula, the best villains in Nicktoon history. Probably animation history too
Avery the Cuban-American no spoilers please
What about PAIN, or MADARA.....love Amon too
16:20
I'm sorry, but are you saying "I'm fucking babies"? 😂
My cousin and I were HUGE fans of this show! He missed this episode, so I recapped it to him. He was shocked (heh heh) when I told him about lightning-bending
“I’m f***ing babies!” -Milena, 20R0na
cant wait for the reactions of the season
The top-knot is a sign of honor in the Fire Nation. After becoming fugitives of the Fire Nation, Zuko and Iroh cut off their top-knots and threw them into a creek to symbolize their rejection of their homeland and the beginning of their true exile.
No, it's just the symbol of royalty lol not honor.
The hair is very important to the people of the Fire Nation especially the royal family
That top pony tail is a symbol of the royal family like if you have that specific ponytail then your part of the royal family or your part of the Fire Nation (like a citizen) (no one tuches you're hair, for that is a show of great dishonor)
So Zuko like shaved his hair because he was dishonored by this father (no honor = no hair) but he was still part of the Fore Nation and the royal family but him cutting that off to now symbolizes his and Iroh's renouncement from their Nation and family which would obviously be very difficult for Zuko
Now he's basically no one just wondering the Earth Kingdom
Men without identities
love your reactions to this series. it truly is one of the best series to ever be made.
Thank goodness for Roku
I love everything about this book.
16:21 You're doing what? lmao
Don't miss that, in the whole time Zuko's fighting Azula, Iroh puts down thirty odd Royal Guard soldiers single handedly.
Btw just to help you understand Azula is a much powerful fire bender than Azula since they were kids and also a really really good manipulater
The writer of the best episodes of ATLA writes The Dragon Prince. Aaron Ehasz. That's why its a good show and Korra isn't (bc he had no part in it).
OMG YES!!!
Guys I've watched the show x100 times. I recently started learning spanish and just realised azul=blue in spanish and her name is azula and she has blue flames. lol idk if it's connected or just coincidence but I find it interesting. Enjoy the show it's awesome. And don't forget to watch "avatar: the legend of korra" after that
Azula has both lightning (which is an advanced firebending ability only a few can achieve) and blue fire (the only one).
Everyone laughed when sokka knocked that jerk of a captain out.
Lightning is a form of fire it starts fires and it burns so it counts as fire bending. All four elements are like that, think outside the box on what counts as a specific element.
"I start fires",
ligtning, probably
13:30 i loved seeing your reaction to how mean Azula was. She really was a beast.
UAU es triste saber que a pesar de que zuko sabía que Azula le mentía siempre el quería creer esas mentiras, quería creer que su padre lo quería y quería volver a su hogar.
now that we’ve reached this point I would like to recommend to skip the previously on intro that appears on the next episodes, it kinda spoils you about the episode
great episode btw!!
idk If y’all will see this but PLS do not read any further into the comments the amount of spoilers I’ve seen are so bad 🤦🏾♀️
The pony tail represents their Royal status.
Love both of yawl reactions.
Zuko is my favorite character in the show. By far. But yes, I love all of them.
Fun fact: Zuko is 16 and Azula is 14(she was 11 when Zuko got his scar)
I don't know exactly what it means, but I DO know that certain styles of hair had symbolic value in ancient (and possibly modern) Japanese culture. The Fire Nation has roots in Japanese style, so the cutting of the ponytail and bun DOES have a deeper meaning.
after roku told him "if you are killed in the avatar state the avatar cycle will be broken"
he calmed down REAL QUICK 😂
Not enough attention is paid to Aang. When he said "I'm trying, I'm trying..." it broke my heart. My poor baby was so scared...
You always look so stunned when something happens I am seriously worried about you surviving the two seasons :D
azula is such a fantastic villian
Azula is 2 years younger than Zuko, Katara's age. She is my favorite character.
lightning bending is a “sub-style” of firebending, like healing is for waterbending that’s right! and just like katara is a very special and talented water bender, azula is very special and talented firebender. she’s the definition of a prodigy! she can lightning bend and also her fire is blue instead of red/orange. she’s the first and only fire bender we see having blue fire which is very telling!!
Azula is 14, the same age as Katara. Her character design is a bit more mature, so some people don't realize how young she's supposed to be.
azula is two years younger than zuko, only 14!
"Zuko's sister might be a bitch", ooo boy. 😬😬😬😬.
Season 2 takes ATLA to another level and i fee like you guys are going to hate/love Azula she’s just such a great character you hate her but can’t help being entertained by her.
Later, the imagery of the topknots(connections) flowing down the stream will be repeated. I won't spoil it.
aang is triggered emotionally at this moment.
Every episode is “the best one yet” lmao I don’t disagree
The best reactions as always! : ) And I can't wait to see the next reaction because it's such a damn funny episode!
I don’t know how they will handle the finale
Azula is younger than Zuko. Zuko 16, Azula 14
This series just gets better and better. I can't wait for you to get further into season 2 (best season, IMO)...Blind Bandit, baby!!!!
17:30 lol she doesn't know his weak points. Shes just 10x powerful then him at this point in the show.
This season is emotional! Get ready 🙌🏾 love the reactions gals🖤🖤
The bald pony tail is a symbol of your shame in losing your honor
Pony tail implies your fire nation nobility
I think the bald ponytail was a traditional Fire Nation hairstyle, even if not popular at Zuko’s time.
Cutting the top knot is another thing.
People hated her so much that when she eventually crumbles it's both you get what you deserve and sad cause she defines an emotionally damaged person
19:35 I'm not sure if I should elaborate on the difference between Iroh & Ozai and their power levels
16:21
You're what, Milena?
Love the Ramones shirt!
Another great reaction! Love the series
IIRC Zuko is 16 and Azula is 14.
Sokka is 16 and Katara is 14. Parallels!
Lightening is a bending power that Zuko can learn but it takes a level of concentration and determination that he doesn’t have at this point.
Such a good reaction video today! 💙
Azula was always better than Zuko at playing their father's game, so she got his personality also.
Lol we'd be flooding towns with our tears if Zuko did not have Uncle Iroh. Iroh is a general. He is a great bender, probably more powerful than Ozai
Yes, we finally get to embark on the story of the best Earth Bender in history...
But bumi isn’t in it that much
Issa joke lol
THE BOULDER!
The Boulder is conflicted about so much praise.
Fun fact Azula is only 14 years old 😂👌
16:20 wait the fuc* what?
