I love this part of Endwalker. It shows what the populace of Garlemald thinks. So a brief history lesson. This snowscape is not the original Garlemald homeland. They originally were from an area far more south on decent land for cultivation. But because they couldn't use magic, they were ostracized and bullied. There was a rumor that breeding with a Garlean would produce offspring that couldn't use magic and eventually would destroy their culture. And so the Garleans tried to build a new place to live eventually making the capital city of Garlemald. About 500 years after the founding of Garlemald, they figured out how to utilize Cerulean. This caused a technological revolution and the birth of Magitek. Within 30 years of the discovery, Garlemald took over the entire continent of Ilsabard. And then went on to conquer the two neighboring continents of Othard (where Doma is) and Aldenard (Where ARR takes place). A tragic tale of the oppressed becoming the oppressors. And so with this history, the Garlean people fear others. Without magitek, without an army, without power, they fear persecution again. And this time, there will be nowhere to run to.
