      Skeletons have no intestines so milk is difficult to drink. They could coat themselves in concrete or butter tho. But I still think that the best weapon to unalive skeletons is a pommel.

    For magic that reanimates skeletons, I always thought it would invoke "the memory of the bones" and make them move in the way the bones did when they belonged to a living organism. This would also mean that the skeleton of a highly skilled swordsman would also be a lot more powerful than a skeleton of a farmer. Anyone got any thoughts about this?

    • @johndododoe1411
      @johndododoe1411 2 года назад

      I imagine the opposite: The bones being controlled by being inside a full ghost of their former body with all skills, memory and soul. Any armor would do the same. So the ghost can fight and talk and do everything else, using the bones and armor as body substitute. Prisoners chains remain attached too.

    I like to imagine reanimation magic for skeletons as a spectral muscle system, as in something that gives them the ability to move and the strength to actually wield and swing a weapon, certain variations in systems like in D&D can make the skeletons tougher as well depending on the power so it is a nice way to imagine it as the magic force becoming more solid, in that sense the force field isnt too out of the question as long as we keep in mind it wouldnt be an invincible one or in fact a rather weak one, as far as weak points well of course anything that breaks the bones so no wonder blunt weapons would work best, some instances have a magic focus such as a particular type of gem on the eye sockets in which cases you might need to break whichever part the magic focus is on or they might continue moving regardless, yes I have put a lot of thought into this so I wanted to add a bit, who knows, it could be useful advice... some day... maybe...

    • @cobraglatiator
      @cobraglatiator 6 лет назад +1

      personally i've created a few different types of skeletons i hope to have implemented, there's ones that use magic runes to act as joints/tendons/ligaments, ones that have a central rune that controls the whole thing that has to be disrupted, haunted ones that you just have to kill again(as if they were alive.) and ones that you either have to smash into dust/bits, and/or find the mage who's risen them,and end him/his magical influence.
      P.S. if you don't mind commenting on this, which do you find a more interesting/cooler idea for dragons: they can change shape between two forms, a beast like, dragon form(just look like a dragon.) and a more humanoid form, but they can't jsut be whoever they want, they have a face, that's their face. or there's two types of dragons(this one, i feel, really only makes sense if i provide the lore/context,so if you need/want that, let me know.) ones that are only dragon like, they're just as intelligent, but bigger, meaner, monster-y-er, and ones that're all humanoid. ? if you care to answer that, thanks!
      ~Cobra.

    • @AmaresHappyGamingFamily
      @AmaresHappyGamingFamily 6 лет назад +3

      I tend to go with both, actual dragons being powerful magical creatures capable of changing into a specific humanoid form (although depending on the situation/magic they might be able to choose other forms too), as well as there being dragonborns, half-dragons and other draconic beings that have dragon traits without being an actual dragon or having the monstrous form

    • @cobraglatiator
      @cobraglatiator 6 лет назад +1

      well, the original idea, was the first one, y'see, the dragons long time ago had a thousand year long war against their gods, when they came back they were pretty terrifying and fought each other a lot,so many races banded together to drive them off, they went into hiding, and originally:they learned polymorph,learned how to have their children know it upon birth, and then at the point of any of the campaigns i hoped to take part in,they'd be able to switch between a dragon form and a more human looking form. they were in hiding and assumed to be extinct,btw. but now i kinda wonder, what if the dragons couldn't switch, but there were dragons that look human(maybe a bit elf-ish) but are most definitely dragons, and dragons who look like dragons?

  • @Bluecho4
    @Bluecho4 6 лет назад +14

    "They probably wouldn't fight with finesse."
    Ironically, a skeleton in DnD would probably be armed with a Finesse _Weapon_ (that is, a weapon with the "Finesse" property), allowing it to use its Dexterity score for to-hit and damage rolls, rather than Strength (the default for melee weapons that don't have Finesse). At least that's how it's done in 5th edition.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 6 лет назад +4

      While we're on the subject, it's worth looking at the Skeleton stat block in DnD 5e, to sort of understand the logic the designers put on it.
      They're physically weak - Strength 10 - so they get no modifier to Strength-based rolls (including to avoid being knocked down). Skeletons have no muscles, so that's logical. They have to rely on their 14 Dexterity for their attacks, limiting them to Finesse or ranged weapons. That's borne out in their default weapon selection, which are shortswords and short bows.
      Armor Class is 13, with a parenthesis saying "armor scraps". Part of that AC obviously comes from the +2 Dex modifier, which means "scraps of armor" give an AC of 11 + Dex mod, which is only 1 better than having no armor at all. For reference, Armor Class works at the target number an opponent must meet or exceed on their to-hit roll; otherwise, they do no damage. In DnD 5e, damage is all or nothing.
      Finally, Skeletons have Vulnerability to bludgeoning damage. Because of course they would. Although it's interesting that the designers went with giving skeletons Vulnerability to bludgeoning, while other damage types (besides Poison, to which they are immune; Poison always gets the shaft) do normal damage. As opposed to making skeletons take normal damage from bludgeoning, and be Resistant to piercing and slashing. Then again, skeletons are low CR (Challenge Rating) monsters, so it's reasonable that a starting level party could take them on without too much difficulty.

    The magic that keeps the skeleton tgater could be keeping the armor on the bones. Also usually skeletons aren't strong, his advantage is that they don't die easy and it's a lot of them. And yes they're smarter than zombies cause they can use weapons, sometimes even magic and stuff like that.

    Here's another good one to talk about with October around the bend. How about an animated suit if armor. A suit if armor brought to life via magic, or possessed by a soul. How do you fight that? The whole thing is nothing but armor. Imagine how difficult it must be to fight just the armor with no one inside to kill to stop it from moving.

    • @alaskarii007
      @alaskarii007 6 лет назад +2

      same issue with skeletons though...it'd be stupidly light weight. though if it was intelligent I guess it could fill itself with lots of heavy cloth or something to give it extra weight. also the rules of this particular magic has to be taken into consideration. depending on the system you could literally just say "pour some water on it and it'll scare the spirit away" though if you mean it just stays in the suit of armor indefinitely then I guess you'd just tear it apart piece by piece. at which case a poleaxe with a hammer head or the mace/club/bat shown in the video would do the trick.

    • @killgora1
      @killgora1 6 лет назад +2

      Makes sense. Something to do with fire could work as well if the pieces are held together physically with say leather or rope. Unless the suit is magically put together then trying to break off pieces would work fairly well.

    If you are an enterprising necromancer, you would want to get an armourer to build custom protection for your skeletons. Because they feel no pain, don't have internal organs, etc. you could directly reinforce the skeleton with metal bars and rods bolted or riveted to the bones. A couple cross-support rods inside the skull and rib cage would make them much harder to crush or collapse. If the skeleton has strength fairly close to an adult man, you could put an awful lot of armour on it without really slowing it down because they are so light to start with.Then fill out all the empty space in the armour with horsehair, straw, old rags or whatever manner of stuffing to fill up all the empty space and further pad the skeleton from impact. Trying to fight something like that would be a real challenge.

  • @ericolsen5592

    As a gun guy, I think that difficulties in hitting them would be a huge problem. A good idea would be combat shotguns, such as the full-auto AA-12 or my personal favorite M1014. You'd still have to aim like a rifle, but even considering the smallest degree of spread you'd still have a greater hit chance against a bone than with a rifle, SMG, MG or other weapon. At longer ranges, grenade launchers are the way to go. Those things are extremely capable at a distance when you know how the sights work. The fragmentation would be a highly effective, as opposed to other long distance weapons like MGs, snipers or AT platforms. The reason this is such a huge factor is because in fighting against skeletons with numerical superiority, keeping them at long range is essential because they'd be much deadlier up close. This would mean a lot of moving around and mining whatever path you take, and if you want to stay mobile than grenade launchers have major advantages over MGs, snipers or AT platforms. Aside from weight, these weapons require extra men to operate. MGs need a gunner, ammo bearer/feeder, and someone to carry spare barrels and equipment like a tripod. Snipers require spotters. AT weapons can require someone to carry ammo and load. And if you're running around placing mines, explosives and booby traps then this is a lot to deal with. For a squad or even a platoon I recommend combat shotguns, carbines with grenade launchers, or standalone launchers. In addition to plenty of mines, explosives and booby traps plus combat engineering equipment. If you're gonna move away from them, might as well slow them down while you're at it. And if your outfit gets cornered or surrounded, then melee fighting might be your only choice. I've always said the best melee weapon is a long-gun with a bayonet, but you can't stab a skeleton. So bayonets and knives are out. A combat shotgun can be used like a club, although you risk damaging the weapon. A hatchet or entrenching shovel is a good idea. In urban environments I'd go with a crowbar.

    In the fantasy i'm used to, the skeletons can reatach bones as long as they're not broken, that's why smashing the head usually works as well, because it works as a core (if the head is deatached but not broken there's usually two options, the rest of the bones fall and try to reatach to the head or it just goes full dullahan).
    Also undead are usually weak to fire because it purifies, then there's the usual salt, holy water, sometimes fresh water works too.

    Unless they're a very newly dead skeleton it's also important to note that the bone would be easier to cleave through than you might think. Once stripped from their fleshy slim Jim's, bones get pretty brittle and easy to break through. It's not too hard to cut through a skeletonized femur with a common meat cleaver, the skull even more so

    Basing what you say off of Dark Souls skeletons - Skeletons are held together (and reassembled) using magic, and move using a sort of telekinetic energy similar to having “ghost muscles,” allowing them to move very quickly and preventing “muscle damage.” The “stronger” the magic holding them together is, the more lethal force the skeleton is able to sustain before it is disassembled. A necromancer could reassemble the bones, but not if the process were disrupted by some form of “divine energy.”
    Grappling a skeleton would be risky depending on how well it could move. Dark Souls skeletons are fucking ninjas, so that would be a bad idea.
    Of note is that in dark souls, a disassembled skeleton can’t really act, meaning the magic animating them can’t multitask that well.

    I think a sword can still work pretty well. Assuming the probably not top shape bone isnt easy to cut, you can stab between the ribs and then use it as a lever to pry those bones out. Would probably do massive damage to the rib cage, which would like collapse everything depending how the magic works.

    FINALLY! SOMEONE ACKNOWLEDGES THE SHIELD CHARGE!
    This is (IMHO) the most effective way to deal with skeletons. It essentially turns your entire body weight into a blunt force attack and keep you almost entirely protected from attack. And due to their light weight they would simple be bowled over or shattered regardless of strength. Personally i would prefer a tower shield or scutum over that round shield but at least your mentioned it.

    skeletons are in 99% of cases ( assumed statistic, might be less, might be more ) made from magic, so the "sticky magic" thing is a good explanation.
    magic can also easily explain why skeletons still seem to have the weight of a human; inertia or weight magic, like making the bones more dense, its not too far fetched considering we already add necromancy into this scope of thought

    I like to imagine skeletons in fantasy settings need to have their bones intact to be reanimated.
    For example, if the skull is split open, the skele will be reanimated missing its head. If the forearm is snapped, the Skeleton will only have half of that arm. Broken bicep bones, and the forearm bones have nothing to attach to.
    So to destroy a skeleton? You would have to either break all 4 limbs, or perhaps just the spine, or some other bone that is central to the skeleton’s structural integrity

    The skeletons acting like angry people thing isn't all that far-fetched depending on the fantasy setting you look at, as goofy as it sounds, a lot of necromantic magic is themed with summoning then forcing a spirit to animate something bent to the will of the caster. So at that point, if you are dealing with sentient angry skeletons ala Sinbad, demoralization is also entirely an option making it harder and harder for the spirits to keep the psychic strength to animate the bones. Needless to say, skeletons are generally treated as joke and cannon fodder for this as well as all the reasons you listed in a lot of settings.... right up until you hit those full plate death knights, then you have a problem.

    sticky magic(k) = gluons or the strong force. Not really trying to science magic up, but given you said that about sticky magic holding the bones together, I thought I would add this. Last year I started to do some research into almost exactly this thing. For me, magick can work with certain forces (if not all) such as electromagnetism or the strong force, quarks etc.

    ectoplasm, either holding the bones together, or acting as an actual skin/flesh with which the bones are contained within.

  • @somnioid
    @somnioid 5 лет назад

    I think the semi-sticky mystical material your trying to think of connecting the skeleton together would probably be ectoplasm.
    I also wanted to say while bone isn't easily cut with a sword blade, ectoplasm might be severed (especially with an anti-undead sword through enchantment or silver). So it may not be ideal, but if you aim for a joint a sword may help separate a skeleton's key parts, making it less of a threat at least temporarily and opening it to something like smashing up the severed arms legs and what have you.
    ... this is all if you are fighting one or few skeletons however. When fighting a horde 3 skeletons and 4 severed hands may be more dangerous than 5 skeletons when we are thinking of direction of attack.

    One possibility with a skeleton is using it's lack of bulk against it. If you hit it with anything heavy it's gonna go flying because it is very light. Like less than 10 kg or something.

  • @tropeadope4532

    I feel like if you took a swing at a Skeleton's spine with the blade of your sword you could at least stall it long enough to run if you're not confident enough to fight it. You wouldn't likely break anything but you could separate a spinal column that's between the pelvis and rib cage to effectively cut it in half. Again this wouldn't be effective for getting rid of the skeleton, but it'd be a good way to make an opening to flee unimpeded.

    You often see skeletons function find without a skull but can’t see as they try to find it.
    The skull seems to function as eyes but skeletons function with missing parts. But when a bone is broken it doesn’t hold it together, the joints just attach like magnets.
    If you break one of the vertebrae, it’s effective as cutting a zombie in half. But if you break a shoulder it’s harmless.
    A what you need is something that can break the shoulder blade a few ribs and one of the vertebrae in a single diagonal cut.
    And a skeleton can’t exert an amount of force that would break a bone, since we have fat to protect us they would have to be weaker than us.
    If a bone is easy to remove. A Pole arm. The classic pole arm trip, can fit around a spine and rip them in two! And no matter what it would be incredibly easy to trip.
    I wouldn’t say a pole axe per day cause you can’t stab it, so how about a longer Dane axe with the weight of that spear head just on the axe blade? That can cut through lots of bones and trip!
    If a skeleton wore armor, tripping applies unless it’s got FULL torso and legs, but think about this, gambison rotted with the skeleton, it’s just wearing the plates, a blunt hit to the chest tends to break ribs as is, imagine if there wasn’t the cushion of flesh gambison or the dispersion of force across the body, a single hit or just a push kick with a shield up or a shield punch would break all the ribs, and leave all kinds of fragments floating around in the pelvis getting in the way of the functionality of the legs. There’s no organs so a broken rib isn’t as bad, but if you break a vertebrae, the upper body would fall into the cuirass. It be hard to break one though, short of the first hit, a blow from the back, or dropping a bomb down the neck. You may need to give it a hit to launch him down too.
    Won’t be consistent but give it a few hits you may stop the legs or suck it in like a turtle.
    Use something that doesn’t get suck in a cuirass please.
    But given how if you break all the ribs, none of the vertebrae, and no fragments get stuck, you render the skeleton unbearable without a friend from behind or a bomb, you need a weapon that can generate as much force as possible.
    Never before has striking your opponent made him stronger (let alone unbeatable) if you don’t hit him hard enough. So let’s go over kill.
    Unrealistically large fantasy hammers anyone? It all makes sense now!

    The lore of undead skeletons is quite odd, one solid representation in the book emperor mage, by tamora pierce.
    Goes something like, when a body dies and decomposes the bones and other pieces retain an occult memory of how they where connected in life.
    The magic calls up an imitation of those bonds.
    Both within that book and with roleplaying experiences, this magic skeleton would have similar strength and apperent weight to the living being.
    Damage to the skeleton reduces the effectiveness of the skeleton in combat and at a certain point the magic user or the skeletons consiousness would basically need to choose to let go of the magic.

    Did the vikings, or any other European society ever come up with an axe designed like this? With the vikings favouring axes in battle, you would think one of them would dream up a design like that, especially with how effective it would be. I can imagine it would be good at breaking through mail as well, so it seems wierd that no European, in the 1000s of years of fighting each other over land and title ever came up with such an obviously very good, effective design. If anybody knows if it did exist in Europe I'd love the hear about it

    The skeletons that I usually think of as fantasy enemies have plate or scale armor (a lot of the scourge skeletons from WoW for example), while the skeleton itself might be light, the armor would probably make them more "humanlike" in weight. Also, the skeletons in Zelda for example are easily destroyed like you said with blunt weapons but the magic then reassembles all the parts after a few seconds, the only way to "kill" them is to completely annihilate them with bomb (Many Dark Souls skeletons have this same behavior)
    My point is I guess... If you fell through a fantasy portal into make believe land, and come across a skeleton (or other fantasy monster) you should probably RUN rather than fight it.

    • @phosphorus4
      @phosphorus4 5 лет назад

      It depends on which Zelda game. In Ocarina of time you can kill single stalfoses by hitting them enough and the bones disappear, but sometimes there are two together, and you have to kill both of them before one of them reassembles for them to disappear. The dry bones in Mario games do that though, if they aren't killed by a few certain things.

    I mean, there's a reason why skeletons are typically used as "jobber" enemies in most video games. It's not that they're particularly effective fighters, especially from a 1v1 standpoint. The point is that there is no shortage of corpses for your local necromancer to abuse, and corpses are pretty much the definition of disposable.
