    you have helped fuel my love and aspiration to become a marine biologist. you have helped clarify questions and confirmed ideas. you have helped me realize what i want to be and helped point me in the right direction. im going to miss watching your videos. and i hope in 10 months i will still remember you, but on the off-chance that i dont, can you please tell me your name. i dont think you have ever actually said the whole thing before and years later when i become a marine biologist, i want to have someone to thank. i know this is kind of personal but it is sort of important to me. but i would understand if you dont want to. privacy and stuff but just keep in mind that you DID help change someones life.

      Your comment reminded me of Dan Pondella, the marine biologist who inspired me to pursue a career in marine biology. It was at my local aquarium where I attended his lecture on kelp beds and why they are so vital to our local ecosystem and others all over the world. He worked on removing a huge chunk of the invasive purple sea urchin purple that are native of Japan that woild eat up the kelp beds and as a result many fish that are important to the ecosystem and the local economy left since there is no species to control the urchins rapid population growth. He also replanted kelp in the area to help create a more suitable environment for the fish that left to come back. I found it amazing how successful his work was in bringing back the kelp beds that provide many benefits to the local community and the ocean.
      Anyways sorry for my rambles I'm a little high. Just found your RUclips channel and I loved this video I hope there is more to come and I'll be watching your other content but maybe another day. #finals

    My inspiration to become a marine biologist is the fact that there are creatures out there that we don't even know that we exist, that are dying, and there could quite possibly be some type of aquatic creature that has a way of resisting the pollution that we have been causing. This is only a factor of what inspires me to become a marine biologist. Every since I was 3 I've fallen in love with the ocean, and have been yearning to learn more about it and the fact that people that have been destroying it's ecosystem and wildlife and just brush it off their shoulder as if nothing happened. There is so much out there that is unexplored, and there could possibly be creatures that could have cures to diseases, or introduce new inspiration for technology. Ocean exploration and ocean conservation are the two main things I want to get a career in because it's my passion.

I just started my journey to becoming a marine biologist (I'm an undergrad) and I'm definitely learning that it's not 100% fun adventures 100% of the time, but it is still an amazing career! This is one avenue I want to explore. I'm graduating in ten months with my Bachelor's of Science in Geoscience (with a concentration in natural resources and conservation). I'm trying to decide what sort of master's degree program I want to go in to. Marine biology is on the top of my list (because I'm not interested in the petroleum industry, I'm more interested in the impact humans have on the environment). I love the ocean and the creatures within it, and I find it to be a very mystifying and ethereal place. I'm definitely leaning more towards this degree as time goes on. Thank you for this wonderful video!

    I"m only a sixth grader that really wants to be a marine biologist and make it big because I know I can do it and I know that I will do it i also know that anybody can do it and explore and meet people all around the world and i can go to a great college and explore the ocean. However, I know that I'm only a 11 year old girl but i have a passion in marine biology. I prayed about what I should be when I grow up and my prayers were answered! How were they answered? Well I the beach in and I saw a jellyfish on the shore and I picked it up after that, I a guy was sitting along the shore and saw me pick it up. I walked over him and he told straight to my face that i should be a marine biologist and I will. I hope this inspired you. :)

      depends on the research. some have to cut open the fish to implant a thing that reads certain data. and stitch them back up. but they will heal over time.

    • @SciallOrg
      @SciallOrg  7 лет назад +3

      Funds come from many places, but when people start out in this field, they are most often working under (and being paid by) a grant from a senior scientist. After working under someone else, eventually you apply for (and are hopefully successful at) acquiring your own grant money. Some people live off of this entirely, while others are mostly supported by university salary (e.g., as a professor, researcher, etc). I'm going to make a video about how we get paid -- keep an eye out! :)

    ive always been fascinated about science, and biology is like magic to me. i really want to be a marine biologist. i actually want to be a deep-sea marine biologist, ya know, the ones that go really deep. like super, super deep. bio-luminescence and bio-fluorescence is so cool, i would love to learn more about it. i cant find much sources though. also(this is very ambitious but still) ever since i found out about chimera fish, i made it my life's goal to see a long-nosed chimera fish in person.
    ahhh
    i had a small idea of what marine biologists did besides field reaserch, this was a cool video to help me understand a bit of what im getting myself into.

    I grew up in the desert, and really wanted to be a marine biologist. Ironically, when my family moved to coastal California when I was 16, and I was close the ocean and actually CLOSE to all the university programs, my interest plummeted because of all the other kids that said they wanted to do the same. I guess it either wasn't "sexy" enough or it was too darn intimidating with the perceived competition. So for the kids and teenagers watching this, don't let the perceptions and friends drag you down. If it is in your heart, it is worth exploring.
    I am now in my late 30's. I never really did find that passion. But I am happily raising my two young kids. However, at some point they will be old enough and busy enough that their whole world is not going to revolve around me. I have a hunch that I will be a very late bloomer in the career department once the kids are grown. My question is, is it realistic to think that a 40 (or even 50 something) woman can still have a meaningful career in marine sciences, especially just starting out?

    I reslly want to be a marine biologist I want to know more about the ocean, and what really lay beneath besides shio wrecks, and the little mermaid. Not even 10% of the ocean has been discovered, and I mean that's CRAY CRAY, besides I love math, and science, and writing is good, you can't just become marin biologist to go to Honolulu, and get high with hula dancers you have to study, you have to be seriois about your dream, even if it's working at hooters, I really take my dream seriously, and when I don't get something right I do it sgain, til I understand. That's a marine biologist,that's how you become one.

      It can certainly be boring or difficult at times, but for me boredom was only an issue when I was starting out in undergrad as a volunteer in labs (e.g., cleaning glassware, organizing other people's data). The difficult part comes up constantly, but I mostly look at this as a challenge that I try my best to rise to (and if you'd like some examples of some of the most difficult field days, just check out my Confessions of a Marine Biologist series ;).

    I also want to become a marine bio but I also want to become a RUclipsr so my idea is maybe being a marine bio animation channel or something like that because there is a channel that teaches about Greek so I figured that if they can do that so can I but I'm not sure how though.

    I'm already majoring in Marine Biology. I already know for sure, that a real job in Marine Biology is not really going to be just hanging out by the reefs all the time hi-fiving turtles and certainly not having a mansion near a beach or on some private island. However,I have a question to ask you: Is it true that a deep-sea marine biologist, who on average, makes about $60k-$70 a year, gets to use a multi-million dollar submersible, like the Alvin on a marine biology research vessel, like the Atlantis by using funds and grants from his research and ideas to charter this stuff?

    • @SciallOrg
      @SciallOrg  7 лет назад

      Yes, many marine biologists get to play with expensive toys. That's what's so cool about this career -- your salary doesn't matter as much if you pull in a bunch of grant money to fund your adventures :).

      Great question -- I collaborate with other scientists frequently. It's actually one of my favorite parts of the job. I've collaborated with scientists in Mexico, French Polynesia, across Europe, the US, and most recently Thailand. It's a great way to meet great people and get great work done.

    For a few years now, i’ve wanted to be a marine biologist and work with mostly sharks, rays and marine mammals. I’m almost 19 and I’ve done quite a bit of self study but i can’t find much information on the jobs i’d be able to get after coming out of college. I don’t want to spend $80,000 on a degree that will stick me in a lab or at a university teaching for all of my life. Could anyone explain any of the different job opportunities, actual pay from start to seniority?

  • @littlestolivetree9426
    @littlestolivetree9426 5 лет назад

    It’s upsetting to know that most of your time is spent behind a desk and not in the field. So much can happen in the time you’re gone, it’s easy to miss something causing damage and later come and think it was something else because it’s easily explained.

    Not trying to discourage students, but most biologists can do funded research for a limited time only, and most need a stable job at some point or you will live like a student forever or become homeless (as in no money what so ever). Its sounds like an adventure, especially with that "you can do whatever and should give up whatever to do what you love" slogan, but it's really not fun after a while and when reality hits most realise they don't love being broke most of the time, doing very little of what they dreamed about - and its not a choice or you not working hard enough, its something you can't fight most of the time - like this guy says there are limited amounts of funding going around, and NO ONE wants to fund you studying the psychology of say, gorillas. These people want to fund something they are invested in, which will provide their company with something useful, funds to save wildlife also happen but you travelling to exotic places most likely won't help save anyone, so more often than not, again, its watching a screen and studying patterns from there and doing calculations. Most likely you'll end up working in databases or doing some sort of math combined with lab work since that is where the money is. Water testing, contamination in ponds, aminoacid dividing, RNA testing etc. NOT observing orangutans or saving wildlife by watching their livingspaces or studying their psychology. Even on field trips its 90% getting samples and 1-10% observation mostly. Become a biologist if you are interested in molecular science, chemistry, math-modellation and lab work, become a zookeeper if you mostly just enjoy animals. Oh and I live in a rich country where the university students have more opportunities than most, and there are only around 4 percent of unemployed biologists. The rest 96% however are NOT working in a remote exotic location, mostly in labs and/or as teachers. Sorry for my bad English its my third language (I'm scandinavian).

    I have the opportunity to study marine biology (and oceanography) at a university that excels in the field; however, I'm worried about the salary here in Canada. Obviously, I want to do something that I'm passionate about and it's not only about money, but I also need to be realistic about having a job that can sustain my living expenses and support a potential family. Does the job pay well (where you're living)?
