Steve Harris who wrote this song, was inspired by the movie “braveheart” played by Mel Gibson in 1995. So you guessed right about the historic war between England and Scotland. By the way, at the beginning and on the middle, he was playing acoustic bass before getting in to elettric lines.
When he speaks freedom to the Brazilian audience, we must remember that this is from 2001, and it is relatively short time ago, of Brazil was a dictatorship state. Freedom !!! Thank you for your good reactions.Up the irons
I've seen them several times going back to the 80's, and every gig has been brilliant. Their gigs are a show, theatre, opera, concert and rock spectacular in one.
No one better musically out there at story telling. The music is so expressive then you have the ultimate frontman in Bruce who is so theatrical with his diction. Iron Maiden rule the roost
Great choice Randi ... Some people have a difficult time realizing the difference between clansman and Klansman. This song describes the struggle of the Scottish clans to free themselves of English oppression; the ill-intentioned people who tried to see some analogies with Ku-Klux-Klan in the lyrics are sorely mistaken. This is a song about freedom and resistance against an oppressor, and there is no hint of racism in it whatsoever .... love the dancing by the way 😀
Part of the magic of maiden is having three lead guitarists on stage. Most of maiden’s songs are based on historical events or fictionary writings or poetry.
Every Iron Maiden song is a story of good or bad...Rime of the Ancient Mariner (poem about the sea by Samuel Taylor Coleridge) Hallowed by thy name ( a man about to be hanged) and more...say Aces High (about the battle of Britain their home by the way) and plenty more.
You must watch the documentary of maidens world tour using a boeing 757 to carry the band, stage crew and their equipment. Video is titled 666 and you get a great insight of band members touring and stunning performances of many songs. By the way the 757 is captained by lead singer Bruce Dickenson a fully qualified civil airline pilot.
Why are you so lovely😊, Anyway I've been a Iron Maiden fan since 1991, so good to see you really enjoying watching and listening to them and also trying to understand and wanting to know what they are singing about, All covered by previous comments now, Yes I have watched all your other Iron Maiden reaction videos to, Please do Moonchild, Infinite Dreams, Hallowed be Thy Name, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Iron Maiden, and more from the 1988 performance on the MAIDEN ENGLAND DVD 🤞🤞🤞 You will love it.
Fan-tas-tic reaction. Thank you! 👏🙂 By the way: Yes, you are right, the song is about the struggle for freedom of the Scots. (Today's northern part of Great Britain.) William Wallace (1270 - 1305) and Robert Roy MacGregor ("Rob Roy", 1671 - 1734) are two historical persons from Scotland connected to that. And the movie "Braveheart" (with Mel Gibson) is based on the person of William Wallace. Greetings from Germany! 🙂
after the defeat of bonnie prince charlie, at the battle of culloden..the goverment forces (the english) decided to ethnically cleanse the rebellious scottish clans once and for all..it was, and still is today, known as "the highland clearances". Those clansmen not killed. hastily fled to america and canada..whiich is why, so many north americans, can trace their ancestry back to this period
Nonsense. Culloden was the last battle on British soil between the Government forces of King George and a foreign usurper who was Charlie. George was a Hanovarian. Some Clans were loyal to him, typically the Campbells who opposed Charles and fought against the rebel Jacobites. Fun fact - this is the reason there are no Scots at a senior level in the British Army. In case of insurrection.
It has more to do with the Jacobite rebellion when the Scottish highland clans supported the return of a Stuart king, formally the royal house of Scotland that got England too after Elizabeth I died, to the throne instead of the German interloper, George I, they had the time.
Bruce Dickinson also had throat cancer and he worked his ass off to regain his ability to sing again. He didn't suffer the same damage to his vocal chords that Julie Andrews sadly did from surgery.
In answer to your question. Yes, this is a story of past history, BUT...the message is timeless. To be free. Maiden is a live band. Story tellers. They be getting on in days....see them if you can. Bruce just had to retire from flying Ed Force One...mortality's a bitch.
I am an Irishman. This song resonates throughout the isles. But. The message is clear and strong for all. We do our part but don't ask too much. Freedom.
Have you done "Blood Brothers " LIVE (beautiful guitars) & "Hallowed be thy name" LIVE from Flight 666/Toronto ,where they end the song with fireworks ?
Metal performers and listeners are always with high energy and that default . Have heard this millions of times during childhood and still fresh but just that high quality A/V is not available :( . Thanks
I always considered Janick a great guitarist, but in the studio. I mean his technical ability with the instrument. In the studio the solos he composes sound great, but live he modifies them a lot and I think he's not a good improviser. I generally don't like the way he solos live, except in some cases when he sticks more to the original solo. But this is a personal appreciation of someone who has been a fan and listener to the best metal band of all time for almost 20 years.
HI FROM SHEFFIELD YORKSHIRE ENGLAND YES I THINK ITS LOOSELY BASED ON A CHARACTER LIKE WILLIAM WALLACE AND THE FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE FROM ENGLAND IN MEDIEVAL TIMES ❤❤
its about the english destroying the clans system in the 18th century. it happened after the scots were defeated at the battle of colluden, the last battle between the two sides
Believe me we did good in Scotalnd...we made them better a fact, they had a standing in thé World (as being with us ) as independentants they would have never ....but by all mea ns Indulge on hating us (The English) so much to hate right? so do tell uas what we sdid wrong? enclined to think so give me clues.
Probably the best show ever. Rock in Rio. Period

This is why Iron Maiden is special. Their performance are incredible. If you have the chance go and see them live.

7:46 "Hmm smooth like butter".
Probably the most accurate description of Dave Murray's guitar playing lol.
Adrian is my favourite though (denim vest).
I'm from belgium and i Say Say Say Say Say freedom for 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘💜💜💜💜💜
So good to be back to the greatest band ever: Maiden! You will always learn something and rock out at the same time! No other band like them.
These are the #GOATS OF Metal. #UPTHEIRONS
Great song, my favorite rendition in this concert!
My all-time favourite live performance of theirs! And I believe that yes it does have historical relevance
No one better musically out there at story telling. The music is so expressive then you have the ultimate frontman in Bruce who is so theatrical with his diction. Iron Maiden rule the roost
Now after the past 600 years plus still now theres an understandable movement in Scotland for independence
Led by people with no love for our country.
As an English man who's grown up in Yorkshire England we learnt all this and the past 1000 years of our history
You can have a good time and learn history from Maiden.....it's why they are the best band ever to exist!
One of the best teacher money can't buy lol 🤣

there was a william wallace. the movie braveheart is a historical novel type of fiction but not absolutely historically accurate.
Check out the 2022 live performance of this song!

It most definitely has historical value
This is Iron Maiden of course there is historical context.

How much you just improved 😃👍
3 guitars is right. But Steve plays an acoustic bass here - additional to the 3 guitars.

If they ever get it this COUNTRY will be more the poorer of the lost of our celt brethren

Bannock burn - Culloden was a Scottish win
@@charliegeorge9393 bannock burn was a scottish win, culloden was a scottish defeat
inspired by Braveheart, one of the most historically innacurate movies ever
I thought of Braveheart when I was listening to this! That movie is actually what made me curious about the Scottish/English history.
@@BetterEveryDayRUclips looking on RUclips at BLACK METAL TEENS HEARING PINK FLOYD
Yep sure correct. England where at odds with the Scots. But the lost so to victors come the spoils.
The song is for sure based on Braveheart. However, that Movie is not at all Historically accurate lol
Yep 3 guitarists...
Have you reacted to Wasted Years yet?
Come on already

All their songs are they don't make up history the sing about it )
I suggest Alexander the Great AG Gold baby 💝💙🍼
Tolerant are we not? Apart for the Brts right? answer from Brits is "we don't care one bit "
Nicko is a awesome drummer but he chokes his snare to death . Now go get the little key/ allenwrench and tune that snare drum.
Freedom from England means=No more money get used to being extremely poor.
She ruined the moment 😂😂😂
