  • Goliath was the name of a giant warrior from the Philistine people. Some people say that he was three metres tall. The Old Testament tells us about a duel between Goliath and David the shepherd boy, who later became King of Israel. Goliath wore a helmet and scale armour made of bronze for the duel that was supposed to weigh 600 Kilos (five thousand shekels, with a shekel equivalent to 12 grams). He also had bronze pads on his legs and carried a bronze scimitar.
At the time, the Israelites and their neighbours, the Philistines, were at war with each other. An enormous warrior from the Philistine army challenged the opponents to a duel - man against man. "Who is the man who dares to fight me? Be he father or son let him come, I'll be bound. I'll beat him right down into the ground."
But no-one from the Israelite army had the courage to take on this swaggering giant. Except David a shepherd boy in a shepherd's smock. He put his faith in God and, in the fight against his mighty opponent, he faced him with only a stone sling. David said to him "You have great pride and protection, but I'm under God's direction."
When the fight began, David shot a stone at Goliath that hit him so hard on the chin that the giant fell to the ground. As was customary at the time, David cut off the giant's head and presented it to the opposing army. The battle was over and David was victorious.
Even today you hear of a "David and Goliath" fight when two unequal opponents compete against each other.
