  • "Cenk Uygur ( / cenkuygur ) host of The Young Turks discusses recent claims from John Stewart that Barack Obama hasn't followed up on his promise of change we can believe in.
    John Stewart may be retiring from his acclaimed television program The Daily Show but that doesn't stop him from giving his strong opinions about things and stuff. Stewart claims that Obama hasn't pushed enough true reform through government, or delivered on his promise of change and hope from not one but both of the U.S. President's campaign slogans. Stewart put the whole issue to bed by stating that with great rhetoric comes great responsibility."
    Has Obama given us the change he promised? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

    Obamacare passed by a single vote. This is politics, if you go too far in one go you won't get enough votes in d.c. So if Obama went too far progressive with Obamacare then there wouldn't be an obamacare. Obama had delusions of grandeur when he got into office and he was humbled just 2 years later and during the years after that. he's the president, he shouldn't waste time chasing after goals he knows he can't reach. He should go for what he can, why ? Because that's politics

      yeah, but "Obamacare" still sucks as a health insurance plan. My friend is getting hosed and I pay a hefty amount a month for something that will only cover like half of the bill if I ever had to get anything major done. Still would be in debt for the rest of my life if I ever had to have major surgery. Why can't we be like most other countries? Thanks Obama!

    • @qmulus1
      @qmulus1 9 лет назад +6

      Nope. He never really was progressive in the first place. He was just telling the people what they wanted to hear. His first 2 years in office he had majorities in both houses of Congress. Nancy Pelosi passed over 100 bills aimed at helping the working and middle class. They were all filibustered in the Senate by the Republicans. Mitch McConnel was on record saying that the goal of the Republican party was to make Obama a "1 term president". They did everything they could to thwart Obama and his policies.
      And what did he do?
      Nothing. He removed the "Public Option" from Obama care because it would have severely hurt (and potentially killed) the private insurance cartels and big pharma before he even finished writing the bill. He bent over backwards for the Republicans every time they held the nation hostage while at the same time telling those of us on the progressive side that compromises must be made and that we were being hysterical.
      Had he had a pair of balls, he would have been on TV every night telling the American people that the Republicans were getting in the way of him doing the job he was elected to do. He could have started a grass roots campaign to pressure the Democratic majority to change the filibuster rule in the Senate to allow the 100 or more progressive bills passed in the House to be voted on and passed. And the people would have responded, with gusto.
      He could have been a fighter. But, he wasn't.
      Why?
      Because he was never really a progressive. Like a wolf in sheeps clothing, he was just another puppet for Corporate American.
      The people who believed in him were duped.
      He was corrupt from the beginning (perhaps even before he won the Senate seat in Illinois).
      Nothing changed with his election, at least not to extent that it could have.
      And it's a shame. It's a shame because in his first 2 years, he had an opportunity to change our nation for the better. Universal Healthcare, true financial /Wall Street regulation, clean energy, campaign finance reform, you name it.
      The people would have supported him all the way, but he blew it.
      It's not just politics, it's corruption.
      We're screwed.

    I am not a member of the Obama fan club; but having said that I have to defend him and disagree with the Young Turks. The Rep. party took an oath similar to the 40-man oath in Acts 23:21 that they were not going to play with Obama. name me one thing he has done that was not contested by the Reps.? In addition look at the make-up of the Supreme Court? Instead of knocking his head on a brick wall, he decided to take Executive action on many thing; and even these actions were challenged. Consider the immigration issue or the Gay issue, or the getting his nominees appointed the jurisprudence (Mike Tyson's word!) positions - everything he attempted was met with a resounding "no way Jose!" look at those 47 traitors that wrote a letter joining forces with the hardliners in Iran. In an effort to embrace the president they invited the head of a foreign government without his knowledge or consent to the country - and the list goes on. I think given the political climate he has accomplished a great deal.

      He should, as the keystone pipeline, to be more exact, will be piping an unrefined form of oil from Canada to Texas, this oil is extremely toxic to the environment, really costly, inefficient, hard, and creates a lot of pollution when extracting from the unrefined oil and would cause a ton more pollution. Regardless of if global warming is real or not, pollution is a bad thing.

    I think Obama has done quite enough for this country.
    - A record 92,898,000 Americans did not participate in the labor force last month,
    according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics
    - The labor force participation rate is 62.7 percent. The last time the rate hit 62.7
    percent was in February of 1978.
    - Fewer Americans are at work today than in April 2000, even though the
    population since then has grown by 31 million.
    - The number of Americans on Welfare has hit record highs.
    - Welfare spending has hit nearly 1 trillion a year.
    - A record 47 million Americans are on Food Stamps.
    - The National Debt is now 18 trillion (Do you know what the INTEREST on that is?)
    - Eighty-five percent of the projected growth in spending over the next decade is
    due to entitlement spending and interest on the debt.
    - The "Unfunded Liabilities" is now at 4.6 trillion (A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM)

    • @mayrodneir7496
      @mayrodneir7496 7 лет назад +1

      Hmmm. I think it depends on if you're just talking about "checking the boxes" on a list {however one chooses to interpret the items on the list), or rather than just analyzing each piece in a binary manner you weight each item based on what was actually achieved vs the promises/expectations. If also depends if you do it based on "what he said he'd do" vs "what he did", or "what he said he'd TRY to do (given the circumstances)" vs "what he did".
      If you go by checking the boxes only and take into account circumstance, I'd give him 65%. If you weight the circumstances, I'd give him 80%.
      If you actually weight the items, it goes way down. He did very little on climate change or criminal justice or immigration reform or reducing corruption. The executive orders "check the box" but it wasn't really the change people were expecting or that he'd promised. On healthcare we got Obamacare, but people were expecting something a little better than heritagecare, even if it was just a public option. The economy and more specifically the budget is where it gets bad: he signed a stimulus but nothing that made any lasting change besides extending 90% of the Bush tax cuts into law forever; his promise to "cut the deficit in half" people were thinking as referring to the Bush base-line rather than the 08-09 budget blow-out to over $1trillion. No changes to NAFTA. He ended the wars but didn't do it very smoothly and then we ended up back in. Overthrow Qaddafi in an unbelievable act of irresponsibility (though mitigatingly he was initially averse to the idea until Clinton convinced him). He codified NSA spying and extended the Patriot act. So overall I'd give him 35%, and that's being generous.
      However, if you also weight the circumstances, that 35% probably comes back up to 50%.
      Overall, I'd give him a C+. He's the best president since Bush Snr, but it's pretty hard to be worse than Clinton or Bush 43. He'll certainly be better than Trump is going to be.

    I have such mixed feelings. there's part of me that says that we forget that the president is a human and it's really almost impossible to imagine being the leader of the free world and all that entails. it's hard to be prescriptivist towards the president and to expect things of him when we don't know what that job is like it all. And I think he actually accomplished a lot when you look at all that he is faced and the f****** mess that he came in with.
    But then there's the other part of me that agrees with Cenk. After several years of battling wouldn't you get to a point where you would say to yourself that you only get one life and it happens to intersect with being the leader of the free world. so why not go absolutely balls to the walls and do absolutely everything you f****** can?! It's really hard to know how much effort he has put in. At times I think it's been a lot of effort and sometimes I say try harder but in reality we just don't know.

      Ron Paul energized voters, young and old. Rand Paul is a less intelligent, as well as a bigger asshole. Pro-corporate, conservative douchebag and I think most people know that already.
      Of course he's in with a shot because he's slightly less objectionable than the rest of the republican party.
      I think a lot more people would trust Stewart, and Warren would attack Wall street, so that is a ticket I'd like to see.

    Campaign finance reform should be on the top of everyones list. if Obama made a big deal out of it he would have pissed off a lot of the people he needs to negotiate with for legislation that has a possibility of becoming law. also, his presidency isn't over yet. he may just be waiting for the time when it won't mean giving up on other avenues of change.

    So.....I am gonna disagree with this a lot. Can there be things to criticize Obama on? Definetly(Drones, Wiretaps, Money in politics, not prosecuting the banks and torturers, Libya, entrenching the Bush Tax Cuts, etc). Does that he didn't make any changes? No....and it would be stupid to say that he didn't. LGBT rights, Womens rights, Health Care reform, Climate Change, Net Neutrality, Immigration reform(executive order) normalizing relations with Cuba, and other things are areas where he has made important changes. You can't just say that because the dude sucks on Drones and money in politics, therefore the other stuff he does on issues like LGBT rights and Health Care reform is "pocket change". Passing legislation that bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the military, as well as expanding hate crime laws to include sexual orientation and gender identity is not "pocket change". Passing Health Care legislation which, though not perfect(should have been single payer) expands Medicaid access to those living under the poverty line, bans insurance companies from denying you insurance for a pre-existing conditions is not "pocket change".
    If we were to expand that criteria, and apply that to all the other presidents Cenk mentioned......FDR shouldn't be recognized as someone who brought change because even though he did the New Deal and Security, he also failed to pass Anti lynching legislation, presided over one of the worst violations of civil liberties by throwing Japanese and German Americans in internment camps, and expanded the military industrial complex through things like the Manhattan project(as well as committing war crimes in Dresden, and Tokyo). LBJ(who Cenk also mentioned) would also fall into the same category because even though he did the Great Society and Civil Rights, he also presided over the Vietnam War(the most disastrous war in American history) pushed COINTELPRO(wiretaps on leaders like MLK, Malcolm X, Civil Rights Movement) and other things like the Invasion of the Dominican and the support for the overthrow of the Democratically elected government of Brazil in 1964.
    This criticism also barely factors in the amount of obstruction he has faced from day one. No other president has face the amount of vicious obstruction Obama has face, from the rhetoric in Washington where you have idiots question whether he is even American, to stupid government shut downs, to Congress passing NDAA legislation with enough votes to override his veto and prevent him from shutting down Guantanomo Bay by transferring prisons unto the mainland(not many people know this).

    Get money out of everything. It is a made up concept, it worked great for a few thousand years, now it's outdated. If you think we would go back to riding horses without money, you need to watch the free movie -Zeitgeist Addendum- here on youtube. Or just think about why money and jobs exist and the state of technology we already have to render them obsolete. Or just argue with me.

    I'd love to hear a piece on why you think it is that "he didn't even try". I personally believe you are being a bit harsh because this has probably been one of the most scrutinized Presidents in our history. People doubt, question, derail him even before he acts. Worst of it is, they say things like "he doesn't know what he is doing" and "hes a socialist kenyan islamist", rarely making legitimate arguments backed by statistics and facts. I also definitely believe there is a racial component to it because of a pattern of relentless and repeated attempts to derail his character, no acknowledgement of his successes or crediting him with it (when is the last time Fox News or a Republican said something positive about America under Obama since he was elected), and directly (almost treasonous) acts like writing letters to foreign leaders to question his word while he is negotiating with them. That being said, after a horrible horrible Bush presidency, we are no longer in all out war, the country is in a much better place economically (though we still have problems to solve), there has been a resurgence of scientific and technical innovation, and the country relative to how it was when he got in charge is significantly better.
    I wish he could have followed through on other things as well like closing Gitmo, true immigration reform, and as you say "taking money out of politics". But when is the last time in history when we were in such a harsh economic and military time and the country and government was so split on our leadership? Why have they been out to make sure he fails in everything he does from day 1?

    • @danny5534
      @danny5534 9 лет назад

      maybe because they feared he would have been able to do some of things you wished he could do because they feared his idealism and they feared his connection to the middle class? maybe they knew that if he even succeeded a little bit or rather people thought he was getting things done and doing well, he would bring about "change we can believe in", and their "capitalistic" jaws and control over our government would be in serious jeopardy?

  • @durhamdf
    @durhamdf 9 лет назад

    I'm a bit confused. You say you like his rhetoric but not his action...What exactly is it that you think a President does? Rhetoric is 99% of the power of the presidency when it comes to legislation...It pisses me off when neo-cons use vague criticism. So someone please help me out? Most of the criticism I hear seems to be that Obama has flip flopped on opting out of public campaign financing and accepting corporate financing...But this is the post Citizens United v. FEC world...It is all well and good to say that politicians should act on principle but at the end of the day their number one goal naturally is to get elected and reelected or they have no chance of changing the system. We need bipartisan consensus in Congress like we did with McCain-Feingold or there is no chance of any true campaign finance reform, and with this congress you would have to be entirely delusional to argue that bipartisan cooperation ON ANYTHING is plausible. They could vote on whether puppies are cute and the vote would be split on party lines and the GOP would block the vote arguing that Obama was trying to pass a backdoor bill to murder kittens...

    you have to remember the president's power is relative to the legislative/judicial. He is the most powerful man in the world but he's not a dictator. You have to remember he has had to manage 2 wars and domestic issues in the middle of an historic depression. So working on gay marriage or marijuana legalization or stuff like that are back burner issues.

    I 100% understand it...but everything Obama's done is leagues better than what a republican POTUS would have done. He started from behind & had the worst #filibustering Congress is history. Nonetheless, I understand that, as a democrats, we hold our leaders to a much higher standard....nevertheless, he deserves credit too. I'm just arguing that Barack Obama isn't just a success or a failure. There's actions we detest, because of our standards, but there are actions we adore too. He is not the sole sum of his faults as our elected Democratic representative for #POTUS , imo. I understand everything else though too.

    Go back and find us tape of BO actually 'defining' the Change he called for.
    He never described Anything he promised, just as All pols do not.
    That 'getting money out of politics was Your Fantastical Idea of the 'changed' you hoped he actually meant.
    By not defining the 'transparent' changes he INTENDED from the beginning, his Carnival Barker delivery caused the majority - those who ended up voting him in 2X - to ASSUME his change idea(Unstated) would be to 'benefit' THEM. lol
    He Actually has been, since 2008, making every change that he intended.
    His changes ARE;
    - to get every one who was opting out of buying Health Ins. to be by Law obligated to Pay for the services they'd been getting for Free at the Emergency Rooms of America their Every Minor maladies fixed.
    In MA, there are people on FREE MassHealth who call Ambulances to act as Taxis just to get a Free ride to the ER.
    - once those who can pay are All on board, he would like to Nationalize Healthcare, so the USA can collect the Premiums or Penalties for Not Joining and give out only the services that account managers deem worthy of shelling out Any Money for, from the pot. The Public Sector will then have the pot of Gold to draw funds from at will, just like they've done since Social Security was enacted.
    - little did the insurers know, that their time was coming to and end.
    - by letting in, over the borders, Canadian & Mexican, NOT just Hispanics, but the poor of every nation, the Dems will have a constant group that would need Obamacare FREE Health care so those newbies would vote Dem, forever.
    The Rep are just pissed they didn't have the foresight to make the bold moves first, so they'd be the beneficiaries.
    They thought that by letting BO win in 2008 that he'd look like a loser when he couldn't fix all the deficits they had set him up with from the Dick Cheney/Halliburton War.
    Instead, these pols on both sides have banded together behind the facades they've built and are printing the US Dollar into Extinction. They have No Intention of paying back Any Deficit Trillions of $s.
    They'll sock away every dollar they can get from lobbyists until the floor falls out from under this manufactured 'thriving' economy, they have us believing we should gamble in.
    Who has yet to figure out that Warren Buffet is the BO Puppet master behind not letting the Keystone Pipeline get passed.
    He bought up the Railroads in the Northern USA to be the sole mover of fossil fuels from Canada.
    The Whole World's economies are in for a Full Reset from this Fiat Based System they've exhausted.
