- Like many teenage girls and their mothers, Chase and Teresa Culpepper often have heartfelt conversations about what it means to grow up. Teresa always knew Chase would be different. Chase knew, too. She felt for several years that her assigned gender (male) made little sense, but could only articulate this to her mother a little over a year ago.

Has anyone else noticed that the mom avoids using "she" altogether and just says "Chase?" My family does the same thing, and it's so annoying. Like, it's not really misgendering but it's still not affirming.
Stefka Lanyon Okay I guess, that's fine, but generally people don't repeat a person's name multiple times in a sentence instead of using pronouns after the first time. It sounds very awkward, and it's just not something done in everyday speech. Also, if you're not a trans person who experiences this, I'd rather you not argue with me about my experiences as a trans kid.

Everyone has to make a transition, not just the child, She prob hasnt had her name changed yet, and tbh chase is a gender neutral name. Nothing wrong with still using it. Changing pronouns is hard on everyone, especially if its later in life.
J Dornier perhaps that's Chase's preferred "pronoun". Perhaps the mother wishes to avoid using contradictory pronouns when referring to her child at different times of that child's life, esp as they did discuss the range of identities that Chase tried before the final identity realisation.
I'm a mother of teenagers. I hope that I can be as poised as Chase's mom when one of my children does something that is outside my comfort zone, as young adult children invariably will do.

There's an awful lot of pseudo experts commenting, pulling "facts" from their behinds. All I know is that human kind is proving to be more complex than we really understand sometimes. She looks great and I suspect the world has enough room for her and others like her. Now I'm going outside to see if the sky is falling down.......all good, its still there.

Chase, you seem like a positive, smart girl! My 15 year old daughter is trans as well, but she loathes herself, which makes me so sad. I want her to be her best self and to help her with anything she needs, but it's almost as if she hates herself so much, she's unwilling to let anyone else love her, even her parent. I'm heartbroken, and I love her so much.
@Lisa Freeman I think I’m going through something similar with my 17-y.o. She just came out to me as trans ~ 6 weeks ago, and seems to be very depressed. She’s seeing a therapist and getting a lot of support at our local clinic, which is a blessing, but I just wish I could take the pain on for her, or at least do something to alleviate it. This is a scary and heart-wrenching time for me right now. I sure hope your daughter is thriving and living life to her greatest and happiest potential!
@@riledmouse4677 Hi, my heart goes out to you. We just want our kids to be happy. My post was 4 years ago, and a lot's happened since then. First of all, they are identifying as non-binary now, not trans. I'm staying fluid and just going with the flow of what they prefer. Some days they wear makeup and pink ruffles, some days they wear a tie & jacket. I look at it as high fashion! It hasn't been an easy journey though.
Since they were 15, they attempted suicide two times that I'm aware of, and they say it was more. :-( They spent some time in a psychiatric ward of the hospital, and we had some rough, heartbreaking years. When they turned about 17, things just started to get a little better. They had a breakthrough with their counselor and started paying attention to academics all of a sudden. Successes in that area helped them gain some confidence in the rest of their life. Now, they are a sophomore at university, and doing really well. There was a period when they were angry at me for trying to help with hormone therapy and having them see a gender specialist. They said I shouldn't have listened to them because they were too immature. *sigh* Ya can't win. But love has been the constant, and they are a really thriving now. These years are so hard. I hope for the best for you and your daughter! Feel free to get in touch any time.

It’s funny: just a few minutes before I read your message, I happened to see my child and had the same thought - that I wonder whether some days my daughter might feel pigeon-holed into this new identity she has disclosed - and I was trying to think how to convey to her that it’s ok if these things shift over time. It’s hard to explain things like this, especially when she resists having conversations with me (which is most of the time). Two weeks ago, she said the idea of starting hormones immediately was her only source of hope. But since then she seems even more sad and isolated (it’s a very low dose, not likely a side effect). Like you say, sometimes it really feels as though I can’t win.
The idea of going through what you all went through during your child’s mid-teens sounds horrid. I can only hope my child will have an easier path, but that’s all it is: hope. And the knowledge of how your child is doing now gives me hope, too. I’m so glad they have found some peace and a growing sense of confidence.

I almost cried at 2:14 because you can see cut scars under her bracelet and I'm going/gone through the cutting thing because of my dysphoria and my parents not supporting me in being trans, I haven't come out fully yet but I've given subtle hints and they won't let me get a pixie cut because they don't want me to look like a boy (I want to look like a guy but I can't tell them that),but overall I don't think they would support me maybe my mom I'm not so sure about my dad though. They say I can't get a pixie cut or even a haircut past my shoulders because I wear guy clothes and they say "I've already been mistaken for a boy" or "no you'll look like a boy". I just want to get mistaken for a boy one day so I can tell them.

My brother is trans, I defend him. He has a wife and 3 kids. He is happily married. (he's not gay I don't believe. However, he cross-dresses and is using hormones) my mom was literally crying and so upset and it shocked me. We are both adults who have made mistakes but he told her like he's felt that way since a young age. Even asked my permission to be trans. I said I love you brother that's not gonna change anything and I love my nephews ( I still call him he/him and by his guy name, he has never corrected me not yet). Not sure yet what his whole plan is, but he does want to be a woman and is married to one. You can understand how this is perplexing to a family who came from a harsh country that hangs gays and throws them off of buildings for fun. Growing up to be a christian since I was a child and him having no faith. I always loved him. Anyway, I used to use terms like F*ggot or use derogatory terms and some of these gay people even touched me when I said stop. I believe that led to a bad connotation from the beginning. After seeing him with nails, dress, living his life, using hormones. I chalked this up to trans people are beautiful ( just not the way I see beautiful when I look at a woman, which is okay ) Anyways, good luck to all the trans living a hard life.
