Those crazy Valve engineers actually did it!
Cool! I wish for a new chipset too. 😮💨
can u do a giveaway
and its not in the uk ffs

Of course this gets announced only a month after I cave in and get myself a steam deck..
Same 🤦
same, i bought it because they said they dont plan on doing any significant upgrades for years to come, and then they release an oled version a month later! im fucking fuming
same ...
SAME =(
I bought mine a full week before they announced it lmao
I know this channel's main attraction is Adam's videos, but I really appreciate Norm's thorough, detailed reviews. Thanks!
Same. He covers every single detail.
Nah these videos are the main attraction
80% norm, 20% Adam.

I’m here for the norm!
Once AGAIN. I feel the need to comment the fact that Norm is the most underrated reviewer on RUclips. Just like the original Steam Deck video he did, full of facts, no filler and elegantly presented. Give this man his own channel.
I agree he needs his own channel. That way when I click Adam I know I'm getting Adam 😅
Tested always doing the best interviews with Valve. Thanks for sliding in the VR question Norm!
Always a great time hearing about the product by the people who actually worked on it. Genuine thrill to be able to talk about their project.
Exciting to see a screen and battery update. Maybe in a couple more years there will be full new CPU/GPU/Materials hardware.
I think their next hardware is vr or steam machine 3.0
it has new apu and new ram
@@DonnDonn799 The APU is just a die shrink. Isn't something "too new".
They said 2-3 years for Steam Deck 2.
That's what we really need! that and a gaming library that works without needing to fiddle with them lol
This is an insta buy for me. It literally addresses every issue I have with my Deck. Far better looking screen, bigger screen, higher refresh rate, bigger battery, cooler temperature, quieter fan, a little better performance, and all the little tweaks they made as well. Like the top model being 1TB now. Absolutely insane upgrade. I only got the mid tier model when I first bought it. I'll be getting the top tier model this time around.
Im upgrading day one as well (if I can get one). I think mid-tier for me, mostly cause I have the 256 and don't run out of room and don't care about the etched glass.
@@austinnafziger4159 Oh, I do want the screen, lol.
@@omnicognatesnr5947 My brother has it, and I do like the looks of it compared to my normal one.
@omnicognatesnr5947 apparently a screen protector for the most part nullifies the etched screen. Dave2d has a video demonstrating this
you can put a screen protector on the 1TB model and it fixes it
@@omnicognatesnr5947
They really updated everything about it. I was NOT expecting that crazy 2 in one carrying case upgrade 🤯
Except the hardware specs and Proton's awful compatibility..
@@MorrisseyMuse well proton is being updated every day by plenty of people outside of valve (and some in). Hardware wise the chip has been made smaller which is a spec bump
@@MorrisseyMuse Proton doesn't have awful compatibility at all. I have yet to run into it being a problem.
@@MorrisseyMuse This is an insane comment. Proton is amazing! Only 12% of my 900 game library is unsupported. That is amazing considering they are not running on Windows. In fact there are a load of older games now that do run on Proton that DONT run on Windows anymore. The main roadblock is crappy DRM and anti-cheat. But that is on the companies. Valve has provided the tools and support to get them working.
Good on Valve for adjusting the prices to match the original lineup after getting rid of the 64gb model. They could have easily just charged the same or more for less but didn't, like i feel most companies would.
yea, beside that the 512GB version no longer has anti-glare glass
@@namegoeshere197well yeah, cuz the 512 is now the price of the old 256
I wish they had a 64gb OLED model for 399 instead. I got the og 64gb model was very cheap to put in my own SSD if you don't want to do that the 549 model is the go to.
@@namegoeshere197 think of the new 512GB as the new mid-tier. The mid tier didn't have anti-etched glass (old 256GB).
This steam deck is a building block for the next VR headset I am patiently waiting for from Valve.
I appreciate Valve's software approach more than competitors going for raw hardware power -- Valve is focusing on long-term software support, looking for developers to include Steam Deck specific performance modes in their games while also continuing to improve performance on the OS level. I feel like a Steam Deck is going to last a lot longer in someone's hands than a Windows-based handheld PC that will have discontinued software support in 1-2 years. I prefer that they're trying to create a better user experience on this refresh so developers can CONTINUE to get used to developing with the Steam Deck in mind before coming out with a big core hardware upgrade. I'd MUCH rather have this new version's hardware that's cooler and less power hungry for a handheld than be able to hit PS5/XSX-level graphics while the thing sounds like a jet engine and lasts for only 1.5 hours on a charge.
The intv with the valve guys was super refreshing and a great listen. They seem genuinely into making a good handheld
I really appreciate how knowledgeable you are on the Steam Deck, as well as your honesty on performance compared to other systems, this was great journalism and not a hyped sponsored video. I have had my steam deck for well over year and these are nice upgrades but not nice enough to abandon my deck. Sort of like I didn't switch out my switch for a switch OLED.. For now I will stick to my deck as much as I love the legion go but I really want a generational upgrade from the Z1 extreme.
Though this does seem like a more substantial upgrade to the steamdeck than the switch oled was, which was basically just a nicer screen. The list of improvements that other (and this) reviewer have pointed out, are kind of impressive.
I can absolutely see though that if you have the original version, that you kind of just get used to the "flaws" (comparatively) like the slightly higher temperature won't bother you, you got used to the battery/recharge cycle, you're fine with the screen, the fan noise is what it is etc. I don't think I'd jump to an upgrade myself if I already had an original steam deck.
But MAN is this a thorough upgrade at this price point even. I think Valve really earned some plus points with a lot of tech reviewers, and of course, potential customers, with this one.
And I think for original steam deck owners it's just great news that steam is sticking to their device for another couple years. More steam decks being sold, will also mean that developers still can optimize for that one target spec and the refresh putting it into more players' hands.
It's really a win for everybody (old users, new users, developers). Like I don't even own a steamdeck and 90% am not going to buy one (I don't have a good argument to get one, besides "I want it" 😅) but I'm just really happy how this is such a huge win for proper mobile gaming.
@@paulszki as a long time user of the steam deck my problem is that originally we knew we would be running games at 30fps, that's fine on a 7 inch screen, but that's not the case anymore, newer games are barely playable on low settings. Where the Ally and legion are pulling in 40-60fps on the same games.
If I didn't have any handhelds I would pick up the legion go today, but I'm waiting for them to go down in price like the Ally already has. The steam deck hasn't aged well and I have a 512gb model, I love it, so does the community, but we are all noticing it's not keeping up.
@@robertwendal5894 I guess it's really a matter of expectation. People are loving their Nintendo Switch despite it being even weaker, simply because most (not all) games that are released on the estore, and especially in the digital format arte specifically targeting the switch hardware or being more or less optimzed for it. Nobody is expecting wonders (ha, mario....) here anymore.
Meanwhile you can theoretically try out most games on steam that would never even be attempted to be ported to switch. E.g. you CAN play Cyberpunk on Steamdeck and be slightly disappointed that you have to dial the settings down. Or God of War, or Starfield. But you can't even begin to hope to play that game on a switch, so there isn't much disappointment. So sure, you could get the Rog Ally or whatever other alternatives are out there by now, but aren't those also pricier and are missing some other key features (e.g. touchpads)?
But really, I feel like it should be a matter of setting yourself the right expectations for the form factor and the price at the given feature set.
I have a pretty potent PC (3090 & 5800x3D) so for me a steam deck wouldn't be my primary gaming device for tripple-A games but realy just games that suit the steam deck. E.g. the steam deck should be a great device for a game like Baldur's Gate.
Holy cow, the temperature really dropped with this new revision, there is more than 10 degrees of difference
6nm chip, crazy how one bump down in lithography drops temps this much. Undervolting this will be fun
imagine the battery life with low tdp and undemanding games. this is gonna be a crazy upgrade
... Who cares about temperature??

38:51 RIP my OLED Deckard dreams
Yeah, but we do want pancake-lenses and they are preferably combined, sadly, with lcd because of the light drop off.
I haven’t owned a gaming system since PS2 . I bought a Steam Deck and totally got hooked !!! Love it and have become a total fan of Valve !
So this is how I find out my 512 gb Steam Deck has been replaced with a new 1TB top of line edition
Keep up with the times old man :p
just buy a 1-2tb 2230 NVme and replace the storage, like for me I got the 64gb model and upgraded the storage to 2TB so If i get the OLED 512 I can just take the 2TB out my old steam deck into the new one.
it's a "make this thing more attractive to buy" kind of change not a "V2 is here, upgrade now" one
It happens to everyone, it's called time
i was honestly more upset that the 256gb model is at the same price I paid for my 64gb model two years ago...
it would be cool if they had a trade in upgrade program if you already bought one and its still in good shape
i hope so'
It's doubtful but if only
Right, I would definitely do it. Now I'd have to sell at a loss. Noone is going to but a slightly reduced steam deck knowing what they could get spending the 500.

Glad that you asked about supply chain and was so happy to hear that they are in a much better position to meet demand for the new models.
Great video Norm! As one of the 20th Anniversary sale SD buyers I'm still happy. I got the 64gb for a bargain price and will let this slide until the Steam Deck 2 shows up..... That OLED sure is stunning though!
I am having the strongest case of the Mandella Effect I have ever felt. I could have sworn Grant Imahara passed away a few years ago.
I really appreciate the designers focusing on efficiency improvements with their current goldilocks chip and then waiting for a better model soc. They are right some chips are marginally better now but at the cost of more power or not enough improvement to change from their current.
Hey Norm, Yazan who you interviewed, is probably on the Valve Deckard team as well, since he developed an algorithm for low bandwidth foveated rendering for VR HMDs in 2018.
Friends and I all just got Steam Decks recently. This absolutely blows to come out of nowhere.
and they refuse to sell these at normal retailers in the US so no chance of trade in programs either, not a fan at all
same here. This exact same scanario happened to me with the switch.
An upgraded steam deck was estimated before the end of this year.. Reddit and the discord have been talking about it
@@juancedeno494 there are always speculations, "leaks", etc. it has come out of nowhere
Yes, it is shady. I don't go on the internet or social media all the time so I wouldn't know unless steam themselves plastered it all over the app. I haven't seen it on the app and I'm blind sided too. I get a lenovo legion go on Monday so this ship has sailed for me. Feels like a quick cash grab to buy some time for their actual SD2.
@@juancedeno494not everyone participates in niche communities on various platforms
Glad I waited. I never saw this coming!
People need to quit asking for a 2.0...damn thing is way too new and there's nothing wrong with it.
Does the anti-glare etching really cuts the vibrance and deep blacks in a significant way, compared to the glossy OLED
screen? I'm seeing conflicted reports on this.
It diffuses the ambient light, so if the ambient ain't 100% dark, then it will diffuse the light into its surface, brightening the blacks. But you can just put a glossy protector screen and that no longer happens (but you lose the anti-etched effect).
Oleds should never have matte screens…even if you slap a screen protector on a matte screen the deck it’s still etched underneath. I saw a comparison somewhere on here but even with a glossy screen protector on it didn’t look as sharp and vibrant as it did glossy screen oled 512gb most of our screens are already glossy, phones, iPads, MacBooks…
Praying the upgrade would be sold and compatible with the old decks :)
if it is i might consider it if i ever damage my og screen but for now i am perfectly fine with it. Honestly even if its not valve recommended someone will probably find a way to fit this screen into the og decks housing. if the actual diameters are really different
It won't be, you need to change a lot of components and battery completely to have an oled screen
It's a different device. In the review Norm talks about how the screen is a completely different size, among other things.
@@aspacegamer92 dmged mine from the case swap, lost the left side touch screen ability😅
Hoping so too. The shell being the same makes me hopefull but untill someone does a teardown we can't be sure.
Norm you did a good job with the questions to get them up to the edge of what could be revealed about the production process. I've just purchased a spiritual 512GB OLED Steam Deck for you.
I'm pleased to see they didn't change the resolution. It is perfectly fine for the size and doesn't waste performance for pixels I just don't need.
I hope valves leaves the 'more is more!'-approach to the competition.
I would be big if they even stuck with that resolution for the SD 2 - more frames and higher detials is way better than microscopic pixes I can't even see.
Wireless streaming mentioned as a big factor for their future plans in VR.
That fits exactly into our current predictions of split rendering console + VR headset for the next VR hardware.
Great videos as always, Norm. It would be great to get a RUclips playlist of your content on the channel similar to Adam's.
Thank you for the video and especially for the VR questions during the interview! // -Marco
The Steam Deck looks so beautiful. When it first released, I was a bit iffy, but when Adam held it in his hand, I"m just like, omg, it's such a mature gaming device, it's not a "Toy" but fun all the same!
Thank you posting this video, i feel a little better to know this gives the same performance, and a 2.0 is still coming.
Very good purchase if you don't have a deck. But not worth an upgrade if you already have one imo. Sticking with mine
"we are still working on VR..." Music to the ears of a member of the Cult of Deckard!!!
Norm does such a great job with these videos. Love to see it.
The re-engineering they did on this is incredible imo. GN's teardown was awesome. Can't wait for their breakdown on acoustics, thermals and benchmarks 😀
Thanks for this video, a good run down on everything and awesome interview with the designers 🙂
This new model really is the benchmark for handheld gaming.
I have not bought a steam deck yet, so this'll be perfect for me, as I'm wanting a switch oled to upgrade to from my og switch model which has some things that I don't like. Now that valve has the steam deck oled announced, I've changed my mind and want the steam deck oled. This video helps with the details of this new steamdeck compared to the original and helped me make a decision.
Def go for Steam Deck... my Switch is collecting dust since April 2022 when I got my Deck. Didnt play even new Zelda because I just dont want to play in 30 frames ler second with those tiny drifting controllers.
@johnhorak2000 exactly, those joy cons suck, yet nintendo does jack all about them. At least third party companies help out with their own controllers to remedy that issue.

Nah, don't sell your Steam Deck.
Just wait or save.
Or hell, just replace the screen if you can.
Wait for the inevitable successor. I agree with the fomo part. There are already more powerful handhelds out there with competitive pricing, Valve will follow suit.
Got a family member you can gift the first one to? That's my game plan.
I can't justify upgrading my launch Deck but man these are some really nice updates. Hopefully anybody who was on the fence takes the plunge because the Deck is my favorite handheld of all time.
I say just wait for the Steam Deck 2, it will be a major step forward in graphical performance.
No, this version is all I need. The performance is fine but I need a better screen and better battery life.
Yeah I’d probably also wait. I have the original, so as cool as the oled screen is, it isn’t worth the upgrade for me. I also mainly play docked, so it isn’t too crazy for me. I’ll wait for better internal upgrades
@kakakrabbypatty1234 exactly, just wait when it really is a major leap in tech...before you know it 2 years will pass by quick

Welp, RIP Switch 2 before it even comes out.
Exactly my thoughts 😂
I much prefer that they made it more efficient instead of more powerful
I don't think people realise just how much better tech would be today if efficiency was a priority
The new Steamdeck runs better (not faster) and it's very clear
When a new more powerful SteamDeck is released not only will it be more powerful it will run nicer, better battery life and cooling than any of the other hand helds
Apple’s M desktop chips prove that. Took the industry by complete surprise, seems like the future.
@@jon4715 they're not that good
M1 chips are basically Adobe chips
If someone released a CPU that plays Fortnite at 1000FPS would you want to put it in your computer?
An M1 or M2 chip runs Adobe at ludicrously good speeds but that's about it
They're definitely a good example of efficiency but I wouldn't say they're next level computing technology or anything, just really good for Adobe stuff
I also wouldn't say they took the industry by surprise, the industry noticed right away it couldn't do anything other than Adobe, it took people who didn't look past the marketing by complete surprise
@@officiallyanthony Guess you’re right, but i meant more in terms of efficiency, battery life, and effectiveness with specific applications tailored to it. Using one certainly feels like the future finally caught up. Still 8gb base memory after who knows how long though.
@@jon4715 that's very true, even under load it's power draw is ludicrously low, and at idle it's basically not consuming anything which is extremely remarkable
Just wish it was common practice to focus on efficiency
Apparently (I heard this a while ago) phones are under clocked by like 25ish% because cooling isn't good enough, if we had overhead on cooler efficiency instead of overhead on power we wouldn't be wasting potential power and our phones would be cooler and stutter less
Efficiency is way more important than companies act like it is

Wouldn’t be surprised if it is true since most OLED screens (like the switch oled, oled tvs, oled phones) are glossy instead of matte for better contrast
Digital Foundry say it's the best ever screen on a handheld ...
Fun fact: valve never actually said a word in some of the article quotes that they’re wouldn’t release a revision. They just said they wouldn’t create a new deck with next gen stuff until a generational leap in processors happen.

A more powerful 1080p 120hz vrr version of this would be the perfect handheld.
@@eternalbeing3339nah they should stick to 800p, 1080p would just drain battery life and performance. But 120fps would be nice
1080p is overkill. 900p should result in better scaling. They don't just go bigger number better, so there has to be reason for 120hz screen in a handheld. 90Hz upgrade is more to allow 31-39 fps lock range since cpu can't keep up anyway. Unless performance scaling will improve to not get into the wall of diminishing returns
I’m interested in a steam deck. As a portable media player, how does it function? Can you watch Netflix content in HDR?

Sell old deck or keep it for backup ?
With all these handhelp consoles coming out I knew to wait
Yoooo! The missing piece!
As someone who already has a Steam Deck, I'll still get this. It fixes a lot of stuff that bothers me on the current model, especially the screen and the battery.
I've had my Steam Deck for over a year now. It has been my prefered way of gaming for the past year. Seeing this I'm definitely tempted to sell my old model and get the OLED. Not just because the nicer screen, but the better battery life, less heat, and quieter fan would greatly appreciated. I just want to know if i can slot my current 2TB SSD into this and be able to continue on as if on my old system? I have things set up pretty much the way i want them to be on ny current Deck, and the thought of having to redo all that does sound annoying.

If the Oled version goes on sale I’ll probably get it. If anything I wanna see update news to a steam deck 2 next year.
Looking at current APU releases.. I really don't think it'll be releasing next year.
I dont think we will have a 2.0 until 2025/6
I would say that'll come out a few years after switch 2.
Yea I’m just curious about ports. I don’t want to get the Oled and then another deck releases with added minor upgrades.
Thanks Norm for giving a professional and insightful tech review as always. Also, Bill!
WHY, WHY, WHY is the translucent version only a limited edition?! Obviously many people want to own one of them. Please don't make it just a limited offer.
A much lightweight steam deck in the future will be awesome. This one it’s not too heavy anyways but it will be better for the hands
So not a steamdeck 2 but a steamdeck better in every damn way 😂. I returned a switch oled for the steamdeck and I will say that oled screen was awesome.

If I had to buy a Steam Deck today, I would definitely buy the oled version. But having a lcd version already, I think it's not worth the change, I'd better wait for the Steam Deck 2.
the 16th is gonna be mayhem 😂 glad I already got a deck and this is just a nice refresh and good luck to those trying to get one.
I'll wait another year and buy one.
@fionnmaccuill415I hope they will be too 😅. I’m so excited, I’m going for the 1tb. It’ll be my first handheld gaming pc!!
In terms of getting the limited edition oled deck it's gonna be a free for all. I would only get the oled deck if it's the limited edition. Otherwise don't care for it. I had the old model and gave it away cause I barely played it
I ordered the 512GB OLED model. I haven't owned a handheld since the first GPD Win (and a Nintendo Switch for my son) and the biggest issues I had with the GPD Win were the short battery life, the heat while holding it, the fan noise, and just how unwieldy windows is on a handheld that small. I also owned a gaming laptop (Lenovo Legion 5), but the heat, fan noise, and battery life were again issues. I didn't end up using it very often because I had to plug it in to really use it and by that point I might as well just use my powerful desktop PC.
It seems that the Steam Deck OLED addresses all of these issues. I know it won't be perfect in these areas (no portable gaming device is), but I think it has reached a point where it will be acceptable. I should get mine today. Valve seems to understand what makes a good handheld gaming device.
