    After over 20 years of homeschooling (and still going strong!), my favorite math and language arts curriculum for k-7M/8LA is Christian Light Education. It’s foundational, complete, and has seen 4 of my kids flourish through high school and 3 do the same at university (the 4th one is a senior in HS currently). Our 5th and 6th kids, ages 13 and 6, are both going strong with it as well. Just another alternative for those that may want something very hearty and strong, but also very affordable.

    I so appreciated your review! I am a new homeschooling mom and definitely felt the same way you did about selecting a math curriculum. I also landed on TGTB. You were exactly on point as we are a secular homeschooling family and felt that TGTB math would still be a good fit for us (although we haven’t used it yet). We have selected other programs for year 1 but saved your video as we work through our trials and may need to switch our curriculum if something isn’t working. Beautiful job, thank you.

    Thank you for this. We have been using Christian Liberty Academy’s curriculum. Our daughter is in the fourth grade now. The school keeps records of her tests, transcripts, grades all the way up to the diploma. They are INTERNATIONAL so wherever you are located, they can help. We are corporate presenters who were hit bad in the pandemic and our daughter was in kindergarten at a brick and mortar Christian academy that was VERY expensive. We will never go back. This path has been amazing. So it’s cool to see so many people on this journey. Our testimony video on the curriculum is on my channel DESCRIPTION area..not in the video area. Just wanted to help cause I recall how hard it was to find the right place. Thank you! 🛡

    We love IEW and Fix It Grammar, too! I also use AAR. I kept all of the activities that go with AAR and organized them in page protectors in a binder. I have levels 1-3. I don't have to cut out and staple all those pages again when I re-use them with my youngest, not too mention no need to purchase them again.

    I started homeschooling midway through the year & we've been using TGTB LA & Math and my kiddo seems to enjoy it. We're learning way more than we were ever learning with virtual through the district. My daughter is autistic and the pace of the program doesn't seem to be too much and if it is we just take 2 days to do one lesson. That's one of the perks of homeschooling. My kiddo has also thought some of the stories were boring.

      I love TGATB for language. I did not like their science programs. I ordered 3 different ones. The wording was a bit too technical for me and my kids. We all go bored with it. After much research, I ordered Masterbooks Science for next year. It looks really nice on first glance. There is a section for reading and a worksheet for every day, which I like. We have used Masterbooks for history for 3 years now, and it works very well for our boys. Just my 2 cents.

      I think it would be fine. The experiments are great for that age. Some of the textbook explanations might be a bit advanced, but I think a second grader could still grasp most if it. For example, the idea of valence electrons is pretty abstract for that age.

    I’d love to hear about how you weave TGTB and IEW together. It seems like that would be really time consuming, and I’m not sure how I’d manage it personally. However, I agree that a little more writing instruction would really beef up TGTB’s LA program. I was thinking of doing IEW for 8th grade since there is no LA8, but if it can be done sooner-even better 😉

      Apologia recommends starting with the book that your child finds the most interesting. That being said, astronomy and flying creatures seem to be the ones that are quite easy for a second or third grader to understand. However I have used some of the other books, even physics and chemistry with a third grader when I was teaching it to one of their older siblings and my child at that time did just fine with it. Apologia books are very easy to understand in my opinion.

    I have a question if I wanted to supplement with AAR for my kindergartner, what would you recommend that I purchase. I am going to be using the TGTB as our main LA curriculum and I don't want to purchase a bunch of unnecessary material. I am assuming I just need the parent manual and student activity book. Also do you suggest starting with level 1 or the pre reader if your child already recognizes letters and knows their sounds. Thanks.

    • @TheFromScratchFarmhouse
      @TheFromScratchFarmhouse  2 года назад

      Definitely level 1, and you need the activity book, parent book and the flash cards. Honestly though, TGTB just redid their Kindergarten level and it will probably be enough by itself. If you are on a budget I might hold off and see if it’s even necessary.

    Just to help clarify, Math Mammoth lessons are not intended to be completed all in one sitting. The author recommends simply setting a time limit and completing whatever math the child is able to do during that time.

      I have a Kindergartener this year too. For him I have TGTB LA (new K level will be released soon), TGTB Math K, TGTB Handwriting K, and AAR Level 1. I wouldn’t do a science or soc curriculum just for this age. Instead, use Teacher’s Pay Teacher’s or free online resources to go along with topics that interest them. The focus for K should be learning to read, basic math concepts, and developing a love of learning. Hope this helps!

      I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes, my oldest is going to high school at the local school. It is a small school (200 kids grades pre-k through high school) where we know everyone (huge factor in our decision). We decided that she was old enough to make the decision to attend that school in order to bond with others her age and take in-person college prep courses. She is also welcome to return to homeschooling if for any reason it doesn't work out. I think the decision of how to handle high school is complex, so I understand people's strong opinions on the matter, which is why I don't go into detail in my video. But I'm certainly willing to explain our reasoning to those who are curious!

    My girls are currently in public school (5th grade & Kinder). We are thinking of homeschooling in the fall. I’m trying to find a curriculum that will be a good transition into home school. Like I don’t know if I should do a really structured curriculum since that is what they are used to from public school or if we should start right off the bat with a more relaxed Homeschool environment, if that makes sense? What do you recommend?

    • @TheFromScratchFarmhouse
      @TheFromScratchFarmhouse  Год назад +1

      I personally needed the structure to make the transition. I would recommend using a premade ready-to-go curriculum, but don't get too much of it. Leave a lot of wiggle room in your schedule for all of the fun stuff! As you get more comfortable, you will naturally lean more towards doing your own thing.

    • @TheFromScratchFarmhouse
      @TheFromScratchFarmhouse  2 года назад +3

      It depends how behind. I noticed this year that they really learn the same things year after year, so there is a big chance to catch up. If I were you I would take some time off from curriculum completely and spend a set amount of time each day working on mastering the basics. Multiplication. Division. Fractions. Decimals. Anything you know he struggles with. Then maybe try TGTB’s level 6 math they are releasing this summer.

I love that MB is so simple that we can use it as a fun activity book that she was able to finish through on the weekends. I chose a grade above her level for MB. She finished it by mid January without any guidance. I recommend both. Honestly it depends on your child. All curriculum’s work well for someone. Can I ask if you plan on putting all your kids in public school once they get to 8th grade? And if so, why?

    • @TheFromScratchFarmhouse
      @TheFromScratchFarmhouse  Год назад

      Nope. To understand this you have to know that we are relatively new to homeschooling. My oldest did not make the transition well and suffered mentally after having been in the public school system for so long. It didn't help that it was Covid times and we couldn't get out much. Any way, we sent her to a local VERY small school that we were comfortable with. It's pre-k through 12th and a total of 250 kids. We know all of the teachers. They don't teach/support things we aren't comfortable with. If we didn't have this option, things would be different. For our other kids we figure we will let them make the decision to attend this school for high school. The main reason is social/high school cultural experiences. Of course if things change at that school, we may change our opinion on this. Hope this makes sense and sorry it took so long to respond.

      Ok... here is my honest advice... your 4, 3 and 2-year-old don't need to be doing "school." If it's fun for you and them to sit down and learn shapes or numbers, great. If not, go outside and count leaves. Sing the ABCs together. Practice writing letters in the dirt. Don't overthink it and just have fun. More formal schooling can start later and one kid at a time.
