I love how much work Brady puts into thinking about the situation from Leon's perspective, yet never anthropomorphizing him. Considering both the ways human and lobster experience is different and the things that are universal to us to to empathize without projecting.

If anyone here has wanted something like leon as a pet, but a giant saltwater tank is too much for you, I recommend a regular crayfish from a local river/lake/swamp/pet/bait store. They are just as interesting but you can keep them confortably in a small freshwater tank. Dont even need a filter if you dont want one. You do need:
a bubbler(they can breathe air if they have to and have a way to crawl onto land in the tank). Just get the bubbler.
deep substrate+something to burrow under. personally I think leons enclosure is wrong in this regard. Give em at least as deep as the crayfish is long. Dont try to get live plants.
Diet doesnt have to be all that varied tbh. I raised one last year on just mealworms and algae pellets.

    • @gemmacook1753
      @gemmacook1753 Год назад +27

I've seen many copy him and go and buy a live animal from a store, but it's easy to tell that they are doing it because this channel blew up so fast after he uploaded Leon.
The difference is that Brady wanted to help Leon, and obviously, making a video is for views and engagement. The whole you're only doing it for views is not an argument. Of course they are. Any video uploaded is uploaded for views and engagement. The difference here is that he has a lot of knowledge looking after aquatic animals and genuinely cares about Leon, and obviously knew it would be a commitment to take him on even if the video never blew up.
But just getting Leon isn't only what made his channel blow up. People stayed because he is genuinely interesting to listen to, and he made really good videos with exceptional quality and editing.
I dont mind when people copy ideas. Nothing is ever original, I get that, but the people who copy only because they want views and they don't know how to look after the animal, nor do they care about it, and said animal end up disappearing. It just cheapens this idea

American Lobsters do love cooler water because they are found more north and are particularly more active when the water temperature is just right. I believe he is also loving the larger space and being able to move around more. Overall just seems happy and healthy, the only thing I can really think of to improve his life even more is a proper cave for him to hang out and sleep in. For the cats chewing cables here’s some suggestions: don’t leave cables out where they’ll entice the cat to want to bite or play with it. To do that do things like bundle your cables together so they’re not so skinny, have them behind table legs and such so that they’re not clearly visible at a distance. You can use a pet safe bitterant on the cables as well. I don’t suggest decoy cables because that doesn’t stop the behavior, it only delays the inevitable when they bit through your cables. The cables are easily replaced but that emergency visit to the vet if they burn their mouth or get shocked will be expensive and frightening. You can buy cable covers as well that can deter biting. If there’s a room with cables that you absolutely can’t cover or hide I suggest that they just not have access to that room, at least for a while. In my experience, cats can forget bad habits if they stop doing them for a while but they can also teach the others the bad behavior if it isn’t stopped. Lastly, leave toys that will stimulate their senses. Maybe a cardboard box with some catnip, a spring toy, a toy mouse or something that can be easily activated for self play. Lastly remember to give them your attention when they’re doing well to encourage continued good behavior. If you interact with them when they’re misbehaving they’ll learn that that’s the best way to get dad to pay attention to them. Best to encourage good play, nice sleeping, good interactions between cats, etc. Hope that helps some.

Make a light mix of cayenne pepper and water and rub it on the cables.
It may sound a bit mean, but the cat will be totally fine, and it will VERY quickly learn to leave cables the hell alone. Don't make the mix too strong, you're not looking to torment the little beast, just something to make him learn "Cables taste bad!". When my cat was a kitten, he was absolutely obsessive about chewing cables. Thought this up and gave it a try. Two tastes of a wire, and he's never ONCE ever touched a wire again in 12 years.

Consider where he would have been, lucky to have nice caretaker, nice home as close as you could get to the ocean without being killed , great food, and nice little shrimp for company. Dear Brady, here are some extracts from my students' "Letter to Leon". They are Bahamian, and, like you and I, love to eat lobster. Here goes: "You are the perfect size for my belly' (Skylar); "Can we be friends?" (Keian); "Welcome to your new home, my belly" (Malyiah); "You are a good pet to clean up my house" (Stasha); "Try not to get eaten" (Amana); "I feel like you're my best friend" (Tierra). The girls also love your cats, and none of them want to eat them. Thanks for such a great learning resource.

1ST let me say that you are literally bringing a childhood dream of mine to life with our pal Leon here.
The very 1st video you had bringing Leon home taking the bands off of him and helping him learn how to reuse that one claw...literally made my heart feel like it was going to explode. Leon has to be my absolute favorite thing on RUclips. By far, nothing else even comes close and it makes me so happy. Being able to show my father proof that someone else was also bringing to life and living those dreams that I had as a little six-year-old girl walking through kroger past the lobsters asking if we could save JUST ONE only to be told no.. and telling myself...ONE DAY...yeah showing my father this video...that part was pretty special too. Thank you Leon and Leons family. You heal my heart every day. Without even knowing. You're so lucky to have found each other. THANK YOU for what you have, done and will do for him. It means a lot to a six year old little girl I used to know. To her..and to Leon..you're quite literally saving their world.

If it’s a dream, then make it happen! Educate yourself. If it is a passion, it will be nothing but fun to educate yourself about it. Get financially secure (an important goal no matter what). Figure out where your beloved lobster will go/who will adopt him when you pass, whether it be family or a friend or sanctuary/organization (because you’ll learn that the lobster is just as likely to outlive you with their lifespans! 😉).
The very essence of happiness is making dreams turn into reality, and when they are achieved only because of hard work and dedication, they are all the more sweet to experience. I don’t know how old you are/how much time you have left on this earth (obviously nobody knows when their last day will be), but my dad told me some thing when I was in community college 3 decades ago that really stuck with me - it helped me decide to change what my major and what my career goal was going to be (and it was going to be changed to one my mother discouraged, saying “it wouldn’t put bread on the table” - I took that as a challenge to prove her wrong, and literally got my dream job right after college graduation 😢[after a serious amount of hard work and dedication!]; it paid wonderfully and had great benefits too lol... My mom then pretended like she had supported me all along and boasted to everyone about my job with pride🙄)…
Anyways, back to my dad’s wise words. He told me (and I could tell he was saying this to me based off of him having regrets by his age): _“Life is not a dress rehearsal, kiddo.“_ We only have one go around with this precious thing called life. Try to live it where you’ll reasonably have as little regrets as possible in it, where you won’t be old looking back saying _“I wish I did ‘this’ or ‘that’ when I had the chance. Why didn’t I just go for it?! I would have loved to see what the experience was like!“_
Just my two cents. I think you’d make a wonderful lobster mommy from the sounds of what you wrote to Brady here. Your heart is very much there for it. Good luck! 😊
      Edit:
P.S. Never let fear run your life. Believe in yourself! If you put in the work to do proper research, you’ll get the tank right! And really stop and think about this fact: What are the odds that the lobster you pick out to save from a restaurant or grocery store is going to continue to live if you don’t rescue it? *ZERO PERCENT!* _LITERALLY NO ONE ELSE IS GOING TO RESCUE THE POOR THING._ It’s a rather simple math equation when it comes down to it, really, right? Haha.
So even if you munch it up and he/she dies in your care, *you know you did your best because you put in the work and research and effort* - you gave him/her a legit, honest chance! You can’t beat yourself up over something like that after you did your best and sincerely tried to make it work. I stupidly got a parrot at 16 without doing any proper research, and my mother didn’t either (I had begged her to buy him for my birthday, and she did out of guilt because she moved me out of my hometown during my junior year of high school and I was lonely)...
I figured it out though, through lots of research, time spent with him, observation, etc.. I should have never got him (I learned through experience that it’s immoral to buy birds as pets to have in captivity; rescue is the only moral choice), but he fastly became my life long best friend, and we’ve be together for 30 years now! He’s by my bedside day and night - constant companionship. He even saved me when I was suicidal some years back because I became disabled from a disastrous back surgery...
I mean, not just emotionally, but literally too - I was living with my mother at the time, and while I was passed out overdosing in the backyard of the house, my parrot *RANDOMLY* flew into my mom’s bedroom and woke her up from her night’s sleep (and I stupidly used to get his wings clipped back then too, which makes it extra miraculous!), so she came to get me to tell me to come get my bird, and then she found me in the backyard in the state I was in... Crazy story huh?
But yeah, I could have easily given him up when I saw how hard, demanding _AND LONG_ parrot ownership is, but I kept my commitment to him, and the rewards have been astronomical both emotionally and physically, with him literally saving my life. Animals are just so eff’ing amazing!
Quite the tangent there, but the point is that it’s often the challenging and difficult things that are the most rewarding and joyous to experience. Everyday you’ll be able to be proud of yourself that you stepped up to do something that no one else would, and that innocent creature will no doubt feel that love and cherish you for it, as much as a lobster is capable of doing ofc. I truly think Leon here understands how lucky he is that Brady saved him (he feels sooo better, physically/mentally/emotionally), and appreciates him for it, as was told in this video that Leon comes to see Brady up close all the time to say hi, like a puppy dog! It’s adorable!
Ok I’ll _REALLY_ stop blabbering now! All the best to you!

Brady, thank you as always for saving Leon and making him an ambassador. We have learned so much. We have 4 cats, we had 5 but our 2nd oldest passed away from cancer right before Christmas. It was rough. He was just so sweet. We rescue and foster but obviously we fail at times. 4 really is enough, 5 is just too man so we have to be careful not to completely fall in love with another foster. It’s hard. REALLY hard. We use the plastic zip ties and put all our cords together and also use boxes we got from Amazon to hide them in the areas they’re on the floor and exposed. Good luck with the wires!

*I hope that Brady sees your comment, because it is a great tip. I hope he knows that he is playing with fire by allowing them to chew on any cables!*
Now I know that birds are not cats, but my parrot got zinc poisoning many years ago and he was on death’s door from that. I got very lucky to find a good vet that was able to save his life, but even with her help/her shots she gave me to inject in him everyday, I had to be by his side to vigilantly nurse him for a couple of weeks until he finally started making enough progress that I was finally hopeful he was going to recover. I am nearly positive that he must have gotten that metal poisoning from chewing on my cables, because I can’t think of anything else that could have caused it.
Brady has to take the time to do what you suggested!

Funny that the shrimp and Leon rejected the canned food. Reminded me of a cat who lived at an animal hospital I worked at. I had gone across the street to get a burger from a family run restaurant and brought it back.

When I was a home health aide, I had a client who had large snails in a tank. One was named Gary. One day Gary climbed up to the water line, let go then fell backwards to the bottom of the tank. I was like, Whoa is Gary ok? My client looked over and was like, oh yeah. Gary does that all the time. I was concerned until I saw him do it again about 45 minutes later. Gary also like sticking his head into the tube that let bubbles into the water. I started giggling so hard, reminded me of the scene from Finding Nemo, "bubbles!". My client guessed Gary was going after any algea that may be in there. We would joke that Gary was an adrenaline junkie....

Thank you for being so kind and compassionate to ALL of your animals and plant life. When you nursed Leon back to health it was a stressful time hopefully he would regain use in his limbs . Life is precious and you have given Leon a second chance. The more I see the cruelty we do to animals the more I think we have it all wrong . We have to re evaluate what food is. I think eating meat is not wrong, it is a part of our biology and a part of nature. What is totally wrong is how we treat the animals before we eat them. Let's say you eat some wild boar meat, it didn't do anything differently than what it did the rest of its life and then it was just over (if it was dead in one shot), but the meat you can get at the supermarket is just cruel. How those animals have to live, what they have to eat, how they die...

I’m lovin’ how he buries some of his food to eat later, like a squirrel with nuts.
I had to put a beloved dog to sleep exactly 3 years ago as of last night, due to lung cancer. On the anniversaries of his and his brother’s deaths, I hold a small personal candle light vigil and spend some time reminiscing... looking at photos and videos of them, feeling some of their soft curly hair I saved (they were Bichon Frises, so they had relaxed poodle hair basically), etc..
So last night I was watching a hilarious video of when my dog (the one who had passed 3 years ago) took one of his chicken strip treats and initially try to bury it in my bed in my sheets, so I removed it and put it back on his dinner plate because that is really gross to have in my bed! 😖 Then he took it and he tried to hide it underneath his little doggie stairs that he’d use to jump up on my bed… and once again I put it back on his dinner plate, sadly frustrating him. But he was determined!
One last time he took it and tried to bury it in plain sight on my couch, but he used a tool from my bedroom to do it... From the ground in my closet, he hilariously grabbed a minuscule detached foam padding that usually lines the hangers we get from the dry cleaners, and used that to try to cover the chicken strip on the couch in the living room, because there was nowhere else to hide it since my apartment was really clean (and I’m sure he thought I wouldn’t see him do it because I was in bed in my bedroom). Lol.
It was too dang adorable and I let him leave it there “hidden.” 😂 The look on his face was just so depressing and frustrated. Their eyes and expressions were always just so clear to me! I could always tell what they were thinking.
He just really wanted to keep one chicken strip treat hidden to munch on later! Like Leon here. ;) After he was satisfied that the hanger foam was hiding it good enough, he went and chomped down the rest of the chicken strips that were on his dinner plate. Haha. So it wasn’t that he was full; he was simply planning ahead so he could grab a midnight snack later on while I slept. 😂

Great update you have a knack for video editing. I am happy you Leon, the crabs and the cats are doing so well. I hope your significant other is also doing well. 👍🏼

Your voice is soothing and you make me laugh. He takes his dishes to the dishwasher or the junk pile. I like the way your mind works. Curious. Wanting to understand him better. Your not just some dude keeping a lobster to try to look cool and interesting. You are you and genuine. Thank you!💛 Heart of gold.
