I only have one fig tree but would love to have more. I live in eastern Tennessee and have my Brown Turkey tree in the ground. We do get light snow here and one day last winter it got down to 17 degrees but usually not much below 32. I worry that the young tree will be damaged by the cold. I really enjoyed your fig videos. I live in zone 9. WE have had so much rain that is ruining my fig tree. I know it's sick from the ground staying soaked. I want to succeed but it is hard. The trees just not growing and doing good.
Greetings and thank you for your videos! I am originally from California and certainly enjoy my figs! I’ve had a single trunk tree in the original pot for about 6 years. Not much growth. Virtually no branching.This year the truck has gotten about 1/3 larger and 2 suckers developed last summer. I had 3 figs last year instead of the 11 I’d had the year before. The garden shop has been in business many years and said to keep the suckers. They do not sell fig trees. Your thoughts? Thank you!

I mostly prune to improve the shape of the tree, but also to encourage additional fruiting. With figs, I have found that any time of the year will do just fine for light pruning. Of course, for heavy pruning, it is best to wait for dormancy. Thank you for your comment. Lou Monti
Mr. Monti, thank you for the tip of not feeding fig trees "COLD-WATER". Always warm up water or leave it ambient temp before watering!!! Never thought of that, makes lot of sense. Could see where figs would go in shock or even grow slowly. Thanks again!
It might be interesting for you to note that I also do not mulch my in ground fig trees until the Summer Solstice. Many years ago I realized that mulching in the Spring delays the ground from reaching maximum seasonal temperatures. Accordingly, I do not mulch until the Summer Solstice in order to allow the soil to warm up more quickly. After that, I keep the mulch around my trees to conserve heat during the Fall and Winter. The net effect of the many techniques that I use (all together) produce both earlier as well as later figs. Good luck!
Looks great! We have one desert king. Its still got one on it from last year or this very early spring, it was in the greenhouse all winter..anyhow, its just now putting out some tiny figs. I am curious, do you use any other fertilizers? Or just compost tea? Thankyou, and well done.
Lou, do you think it is better to let your figs dry out in between watering or do you try and keep a consistent moisture level. Its my first time rooting cuttings and I’m always worried I’m overwatering. I use a moisture meter on my cuttings that have recently been moved outside. I left them in the shade for a week then moved them to full sun. They’re still very small. My moisture meter never goes above a 1 or 2 (dry), on a scale from one to ten. I let it go almost complete dry before watering. Does that sound right to you or would you up the moisture level? Thanks
Hi, there! It's difficult to instruct you at a distance on this important topic. My best advice on watering cuttings is never to let them dry out. Keep the soil moist, but not heavily saturated with water. It takes some gettingvuse to, but you will gradually catch on and develop good instincts for how to proceed. Good luck! Lou Monti
If it has worked for you in the past, I see no reason why you should discontinue the practice. I haven't tried it, but it's an interesting idea. It could very well be practical and effective, especially on smaller trees.

I have never had any insect problems with any of my fig trees in my collection. The red and gold spheres hanging from the ceiling of my greenhouse are large, decorative, Christmas bulbs that I hung up to spruce things up a bit inside.
Figs love water and I always provide it when needed. I do not allow my figs to suffer or thirst for water! I wouldn't deprive my thirsting figs of water any more than I would my own children! The idea that figs hate water, or do not need proper watering in order to come to successful fruition, is yet another serious misconception in need of being soundly corrected. It is true that too much water, like with all fruits, should be avoided and that watering should be sensibly restricted just Pryor to harvest. Of course, excessive rain and humidity is a sometimes unavoidable occurrence to be dreaded by fig growers. However, generally speaking, water should always be provided to your fig trees when you have observed an obvious need!
I will say this... I made a clone of a fig a few years ago in a gravel bed in my aquaponics system. Just shoved a twig the diameter of a pencil and half the length into the gravel in early Spring. By late Summer the twig was a new tree already and hitting the roof of my short greenhouse. I cut it back 2' or so.... and by Fall all of the side shoots had not only hit the roof of the greenhouse again... but were actually pushing the tree over/trying to push out the roof of the greenhouse!!! When I went to pull it out of the gravel bed (Which is just gravel and water btw) it turned out that the fig tree had claimed almost every piece of gravel as it's own! It took me hours to work all of the gravel out of the roots to get it back. I will now do a mid Summer transplant to my future fig clones. lol Maybe even early Summer. I potted that tree up in a half barrel for a while and then gave it to the father-in-law... and it is pumping out the fruit now two years later. It is about 8' Tall x 6' Wide and in bush form. That was a Chicago Hardy though. I now have many better tasting/smaller cultivars. I wonder if I should grow a black madeira in a flood/drain gravel bed since they stay so small. It might be worth putting a clone in there to see if the fruit still has flavor and does not split in the final stages.
Hi, tim! The answer to that question will often depend on the time of year it is, but generally speaking, I do like my tree's tone fairly well established before planting them in ground. However figs are very tough and tend to adapt well to a wide range of imperfect conditions. Regards, Lou Monti

I would choose one based on a high satisfaction factor in the customer reviews. I've tried several brands based on that approach and I haven't been disappointed. However, for convenience, I would recommend getting one with handle loops and I have found that the slightly taller ones seem to work a little better in general. There are many alternative and effective methods of providing nutrition to fig trees! Occasional use of composted tea works very well, too. However, please allow me to ask an honest question? Why are there so many people seemingly allergic to effort? Seriously, I'm asking you this question in all earnest! In any case, I will attempt to answer your question and please don't feel that I'm reprimanded you or being condescending in any way. Here goes! Growing fig trees is hard work and requires a great deal of personal effort! No pain, no gain! There is nothing easy about it and it's expensive, too. If you want to be a successful grower, you have to be willing to put in the hours of hard work, and maintain a certain level of discipline, responsibility, and personal sacrifice! There's an old adage that goes like this..."If you want a job done right you do it yourself". Here's another one...." Any job worth doing is worth doing right"! Here is another of my favorites..."Good better best, never let it rest, until your good is better and your better best"! I could go on and on and on, but it suffices to say that these are the principles by which I have lived my entire life. To address your question with more specificity, it is always a good idea to mix in well composted manure with your personalized potting soil. I have mentioned this several times in my videos. It's also a good practice to heap up some compost every now and then around your in ground trees. However, the rain and sunlight will quickly dilute any compost applied in this manner, and it's nearly impossible to regulate the potency, as well. In my opinion, fresh, well composted, tea should be given regularly at intervals, whenever available, in addition to other applications of plant nutrients. It's easy to regulate, it won't burn your tree roots, it guarantees a fresh supply of nutrients on a regular basis, and the fig trees absolutley love having there tea served daily! Lol! I use a small amount whenever my figs need watering and I have enough available for use. I use a lot of compost together in all of my gardening projects and there never really seems to be enough to satisfy all of my uses. I'm always in the process of making more and I don't throw away anything that can be added to my heaps. Because I truly try to main an organic approach to all of my gardening projects, and because of excessive costs associated with purchasing them, I try to avoid buying commercial, bagged, compost as a rule. Thank you. I have always known that fruit trees including fig trees take that long to fruit. As for your family, I was born and raised on the island of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean. My grandfather's fig trees were over 50 years old and gave the biggest figs I have ever known. Unfortunately, my mother sold the land and no one took cuttings. Your video is very inspiring as it gives me a look to the past.
Hi, Marc! It's easy to prevent mosquitoes because my figs are always thirsty and I rotate my barrels from one empty barrel to the next full one. The barrel gets dried in the sun for a few hours and that also kills any Algae forming inside. The mosquitoes never get a chance to hatch because the barrel never stays full long enough. Thank you. I have always known that fruit trees including fig trees take that long to fruit. As for your family, I was born and raised on the island of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean. My grandfather's fig trees were over 50 years old and gave the biggest figs I have ever known. Unfortunately, my mother sold the land and no one took cuttings. Your video is very inspiring as it gives me a look to the past.

How do you prevent mosquitoes from all the standing rain water?
Hi, Marc! It's easy to prevent mosquitoes because my figs are always thirsty and I rotate my barrels from one empty barrel to the next full one. The barrel gets dried in the sun for a few hours and that also kills any Algae forming inside. The mosquitoes never get a chance to hatch because the barrel never stays full long enough. Each barrel gets completely emptied before another is started. Regards from, Lou Monti
