Nice job. When I read "Tomoko Aran" in the credits of "Out Of Time" I couldn't believe it until I heard that he had sampled the song "Midnight Pretenders".
What is amazing to think, is that Tomoko Aran is still alive, and I can only imagine how amazing it's been to have her song as a massive staple of the boom of City Pop in recent years, and now with The Weeknd sampling it
I was on the opposite side though, I listened to Out of time before Midnight Pretenders. And when youtube randomly played Midnight Pretenders, I was waiting to sing along "There's so much in my life". However, that was different. I felt amazed; and immediately, i searched and knew that Abel used Arans' sample 😅😅😅😅
Questioning this cheap ass sampling he made that doesn't even fit his vocal style after creating an original masterpiece like Blinding Lights is not "gatekeeping".
Oh wow! When J Pop is inspired by Black music all along, and now The Weeknd sampled a J Pop classic! Music really connects the world. Meanwhile, this Japanese song ain't even the Original, it's a copy of an older black R&B classic " Yearning for Your Love" by The Gap Band.
Omg finally someone else knows the same!! So many 80s Japanese funk and soul inspired by Black American Soul and Funk all along. Full circle!! yet city pop seems so made with care and attentiveness to every note/beat. That’s why I love city pop so much too. 💞
I remember listening to the Weeknd a few weeks ago and out of time came up for the first time. First time I heard it. I heard the intro and was like ah ok city pop now ok....then heard him singing. I had to stop and check to see what was going on. And yep he sampled this. Two of my favorite things the weekend and citypop together. Awesome mix btw
I absolutely adore Tomoko Aran and i hugely respect Abel as an artist as well as his music, it's just a shame that all these classics get mixed together with modern works and don't get the recognition they deserve individually, and that other modern artists do the same as this song but just take most of the old song instead of really sampling it (Katy Perry and Niki Minaj do thisfor example) Either way this song at least is good, and props to Abel for crediting Tomoko Aran instead of just taking her song for granted.
I can’t believe fuyu kukan came out around the time Thriller did!! The album art is ahead of its time and the music finally in the limelight after decades ❤️
When I heard Out of time on the radio I almost lost my shit when I heard Midnight pretenders. ;-; I want more artists using these city pop beats more, PLS!!!
I like what you did here but this could definitely be mixed better. A few parts where both songs overlapped sounded really off. They both have different rhythms and their own flow, so it started to sound crazy at times.
Nice job.

Yesssss
Abel is definitely a man of culture.. maybe he scours the alleys and nooks of RUclips citypop and synthwave channels to chill in his spare time.
Kissland probably inspired him
I've seen his account like a pretty niche edited version of one of his songs. He's definitely not unaware of his fans.
@@j_oe6919 Think was more OPM ( big part of the album) . He is on the vaporwave/synthwave/etc wave.
he lived in Japan for a while when he created Kiss Land so i think that played a role
I guarantee this was 100% Oneohtrix Point Never's idea. dude literally created vaporwave 10 years ago, he obviously knows the shit
first time hearing Out Of Time was like, "what was that?, I was not playing Midnight Pretenders" until Abel sang, that blew my mind.

City pop was a genre of Japanese music in mostly the 80s.
I love it when artists sample city pop songs, means more people are exposed and get to enjoy the lovely music.
