P-90 Polarity Change

- A quick and dirty polarity change of a P-90.
Outer edges of both magnets should be facing inwards when completed.
Leads coming from coil should be reversed... "ground" lead should now be connected to HOT, and "hot" lead should now be connected to GROUND.
Just a tip, if your P90 doesn't come with a braided ground coil like the one in the video and is just a single wire, you can swap the wires on the pickup selector/potentiometer instead of the pickup. This way, you don't risk damaging the coil from heat.
Is there a sonic advantage to having braided ground coil? I just bought some p-90s that are single wire...
Yes it's shielding the live wire. Less hum.@@josephballerini3730
great video...of the back of your hand!
yeaaa, I know. It was done in a hurry for someone specific. Eventually I'll get around to re-shooting it.
Hope I didn't come off as too snarky. I just thought it was humorous. Thanks for talking us through it anyway...
Not at all. I wasn't very happy with it either, but never got the chance to revisit it.
I appreciate you taking the time to post this. Very helpful. Would have been nice to see the process clearer. But still helpful!
I still plan of re-filming it some day. Back then, I had no proper camera holding device.
To reverse polarity, you either have to reverse the magnet OR flip the wire, but not both... If you reverse the magnet AND flip the wire, you are just turning it back it what it once was....
It is like drive on the opposite direction, you either turn the car 180° around OR put the car in reverse...
If you turn the car around AND then drive it in reverse, you will end up going the same direction as before....
Semi-correct, but keep in mind there are two types of phasing. Magnetic, and electric. Assuming you have two P90's which are South magnetic polarity, CCW wound coils (as is vintage standard), flipping only the magnets in one will put it out of phase with the other pickup, as would swapping only the leads. But doing both will cause it to be hum-canceling in the middle position, since the coil is now technically "reverse wound" as well as the magnets being flipped.
Ok if i understand? That means the pick up will be out of phase or in phase?
Would have been nice to actually see what you were doing.
I have never seen this, ever before. I know what I will be up to tomorrow. sweet!!
I thought your video was perfect. I like this way better than moving around the coils. Much easier. A little soldering is all one needs. Mine sounds great now.
Will this noise cancel in centre position.
I'm looking at matching a Jazzmaster in a neck position and a p90 in the bridge on a LPJ.. The JM has magnets for pole pieces.. So I'm not sure how to identify which will be North and South on these except to put the face to face... Should they stick or repel for cancellation? Any idea?
You may want to consider a TOP VIEW camera angle for your next DIY video 😁
But why swap the leads?
I just did this mod today but didn’t swap the leads and my guitar sounds perfect (it used to have that out of phase “honk” on middle switch position)
Thank you for your help! I have a further question: what could be the cause of the magnets simply not wanting to budge? I'm trying to flip (turn) them but they just won't move.
If the pickup is wax potted, the magnet may be being held in place by wax, and difficult to remove.
As some point, I intend on filing another video that isn't so obscured by my hands.
@@WolfetonePickups Thanks for your mesasge! Damn, that's unfortunate. Can a separator knife help in this instance? I would really like to reverse that polarity because the neck P90 on my guitar doesn't combine well with my Filtertron and I'm pretty sure it's a polarity (out of phase) issue.
@@WolfetonePickups Thanks again for your tip, it worked! I have now flipped the magnets. My question is now related to switching the wires around - would that be considered too dangerous if the ground and lead wire go 'into' or near the area where the pickup wire is located? (this 'area' is shielded off by black cloth/synthetic material and the connections themselves can't be seen becaues of this).
Change the camera position you covered with your palm what you actually did
I will film a new one shortly, now hat I have a better camera arrangement.
This video was very handy......
haarr har harr. ok, fine.. I'll make a new one. Soon. I promise.
On mine the magnets wouldn't budge, any tips on getting those out?
If your switching the wires.. why did you need to switch the magnets ? Is this to reduce hum ?
polarity is both electrical and magnetic. When combined with another pickup, having either the magnets or coil reversed in relation to the other pickup will put it out of phase. Having both reversed will make it hum-cancelling when combined with the other pickup.
ok,thanks . The video wasn't clear on why you're reversing polarity. I thought it was to get an out of phase sound.
Yeah, the video kinda sucked. It was made in a hurry for someone who wanted to know how to flip the magnets. Evertually I'll get around to doing another one.
Its video is ok, just change the text in the description
WolfetonePickups ....that's what I need to do. Thanks but unfortunately your hands were in the way. Well at least I know it's possible
WHAT the heck? Did you even review your v-clip?
I cant see anything that you are doing
please, next time put your camera on the front then we can see something, thanks
Can't see what you did!
Yer hands in the way there bud
what for ? you could first start by explaining why you do this and with waht result..; but you just don't and cover everything with your hands
You do it so that it will cancel the him with the other pickup.
I got half of the video
So on a pickup with 2 wires you can just wire it up backwards after rotating the magnets right?
Yes you should be able to but the shielding wire should also be switched to the other side. On my P90's you cannot unsolder like these ones and the shielding wire was soldered at the swtich end and so I had to move the shield wire from the ground to the (previously) hot wire as well as switching.
and how they sound?
Like the back of a hand.
thanks!
Hahaha joker you got us .
Yea, terrible angle. I'll re-film it. Some day.
