The robocop looking guy has a sheath for his laser blade, further, he yells "laser brado!" before unsheathing it. What a chad.
From what I remember it's a retractable energy sword that can alter its shape. It's just Shaider here always likes to inject it with laser power with his hand so it becomes like a lightsaber late into the fight probably to make it cooler.
I know the new Star Wars trilogy took some liberties but...
