Brits do tend to communicate more indirectly as a whole. It's one of the reasons I love watching LIB Japan, Sweden, Brazil, etc. There is such a difference in how people communicate culturally as well as what kinds of expectations are upheld and how much drama gets aired verses keeping some things behind closed doors or never spoken about at all.

IDK I'm prolly talking out my ass, but every time I give someone an out they take it and they take it in the most flippant, unsatisfying way ever. Then there is nothing I can do because I have them the out. Now if I ask for more they'll easily turn it around on me, "What!? You said that's all I had to say! Did you lie when you said that!?" Yeah so now I don't give a single way out haha. They'll work to get out of the tension, I'm not helping them at my detriment.
