    The thing about most of Mel Brooks' parodies is that they spoof things but they couch the spoof in jokes that are still jokes even if you don't understand the reference. Young Frankenstein, for instance, is stuffed full of references to Frankenstein movies, but you don't need to know that to understand any of the humor.

    • @Brianna-eo8nu
      @Brianna-eo8nu 3 года назад +41

      The first two Shrek movies are also a good example of reference humour done right.
      One example I can think of is in the first Shrek, where Robin Hood and co ambush Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, and Fiona takes them out with a slow motion bullet time rotation kick a la Trinity in The Matrix while also stopping mid slow-mo to fix her hair.
      The joke works here even if you haven’t seen The Matrix because
      A) It establishes Fiona’s character as being competent at fighting and defending herself despite what you would normally expect from a stereotypical Disney-esque princess like her. Which plays into the film’s theme of challenging the typical Disney fairytale tropes. And
      B) The idea of someone stopping mid bullet time to fix themselves up and look proper is still a cute, funny little gag that stands on its own.
      What the people who made Spaceballs and the first two Shrek movies understood was that you can’t just throw in a random pop culture reference and expect people to immediately get it and find it funny. You need to craft actual jokes around those references that can still work on their own merits, regardless if the viewer understands what that joke is referencing or not.

      Heh, the "Search for Spaceballs 2" thing could work, riffing on the huge time jump between Episodes 6 and 7 and how much story was left untold. As well as the whole phenomenon of "generational jump" sequels we've been seeing lately. (eg Creed) Everything about the world is totally different from the first movie, people keep talking about vague things that happened offscreen, etc. The search itself could even mirror the search for Luke in 7, except it's the kids looking for someone who can just explain the damn plot to them.

    The funny thing is the premises reminds me of Excel Saga, one of my favorite anime that essentially a show that parodies various manga/anime genres but also entertainment as a whole from around the world. What made that work is that the initial plot between all of this was that the main characters were trying to take over the world and each episode revolved around them trying to do so based around whatever genre they were parodying so the main story itself was a blank slate of sorts. It lent itself to no real 'main' genre so it taking the form of another series or tone could fit. There was an episode where they played out the whole thing as a serious anime with no over the top gags at all until the end and even that was funny because you knew the series they were trying to immatate so when the parodies popped up, you couldn't help but laugh because even in trying to be serious you couldn't take it seriously.
    Comparing that to Spaceballs, Spaceballs already *IS* a parody of the sci-fi genre so them trying to parody everything was moving a bit too far out of their wheelhouse even though I think a lot of what they did could have been snuck in as gags to support the main thing they were parodying.

    When I heard about the Spaceballs cartoon show, I thought the animation would be a more wacky and over the top like Looney Tunes or Tex Avery. But it was that crummy early 2000s flash animation.

    I didn't know the show ever existed. I had hoped for Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money to actually be made with the new Star Wars movies having received mixed reviews, so there's plenty to critique, parody, and insult. Not to mention, a lot of other franchises had terrible sequels or reboots like The Predator, and the Aliens movies no one saw. They could have even include lines like "bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica," and it would work.
