As a European, I'm always fascinated (or shocked) by the fact that some "developed" countries like the US don't use drinking water from the tap. I've never been to the US, so I'd like to know if it's really that bad. In all the countries I've been in Europe so far, I didn't think about that problem, I always drink water from the tap (in hotel rooms or other public places). It is even one of the most and best monitored "food" we have; many scientists even say it is safer than bottled water.

Well you said it yourself: developed countries.
We seem less and less like a developed country every day. Seriously, though, it's safe enough in most places, or so I'm told. I drank tap water growing up. My entire childhood was tap water and I'm mostly alright.
Now I have a filter (like many Americans) that I run the tap water through before drinking. I don't trust our federal or local government, but that's just a personal thing. The water might be just fine, but it might be flint.

I’m a licensed water distributor in Kentucky, USA and most tap water nationwide is as good, or better than bottled water. There are outliers like the notorious Flint, Michigan. There are premium water bottlers who claim to have a pristine product. Most bottled water here offers no health benefits comparably, and contain exponentially more micro-plastics.

I attempted to consult Ms. Brokovich on multiple occasions to seek advice on a major multinational corporation due to them putting huge amounts of pollutants into one of the major river systems in Canada and received no response. So I went through the usual b.s channels to report the infraction and the exact fear I'd expressed to her came to fruition. I even drew an extremely detailed map of where to test soil and water and was told by the authorities doing the testing that all samples came back clean. Clearly they took a bribe from the corporation because there was 10 to 12 inches of black foam on the waters surface which when windy outside would float back down from the air leaving an ashy/ oily coating on everything it touched. And I had witnessed absolute tonnage of pollutants improperly disposed of on the property. And upon doing my own rudimentary tests the contamination levels where nearly off the charts. Subsequently the corrupt environmental group also dropped my name to the corporation although they swore over and over again that I'd remain anonymous and then I was harassed until the point I was literally forced to resign and was told to resign or the harassment would continue until they found a reason to fire me from a career which paid one of the highest wages anywhere in the area. This has caused me to lose all faith in people and especially opened my eyes to just how unstoppable corporate greed and corruption truly is. My crime was giving a rats ass about the environment and it cost me quite dearly. Their crimes will be felt for generations and still to this day that same corporation continues to pollute in the same manner as always. It's truly disgusting that it cost me so goddamn much and yet they have had zero repercussions. Lesson learned.... doing the right thing just isn't worth it so you are on your own humanity. Enjoy the yummy pcb water.

@@rebeccabroadway9874 she actually had no response despite multiple attempts to plea for any insight or information. It only costed me several hundred thousand dollars though and I learned a lesson that doing the right thing isn't always beneficial for anyone sometimes. I'm not placing blame on her at all. That is all on the giant corporate asshats that continue to toxify an area which houses a great portion of the worlds freshwater supply and is actually located extremely close to the watershed. I just want people to know that reporting environmental infractions which massive corporations commit can be extremely detrimental unless you can receive help from organizations which will not accept bribes like the government does.

Overchlorination is a big problem The toxic byproducts then have to be removed at great cost. Our ground and surface waters are quite clean in areas of Maine, but we now have to chlorinate the water, which makes it toxic, which then has to be cleaned up. So water went from $8 per unit and it now is $45 per unit (not exactly, but you get the drift).
As for arsenic in the water, it is the dose that makes the poison, so the amount does matter (even for carcinogenic chemicals). There is no such thing in our lives as no risk. Also some chemicals are readily absorbed dermally, arsenic is one, but others are not. Some chemicals become aerosolized in our bathrooms when we take showers (e.g., chloroform and other chlorinated byproducts).
I think we need to revise our infrastructure nationwide - need the political will though. We could have plenty of jobs in the U.S. for people who didn't go to college if we worked on infrastructure and trained people in vocational colleges for these real world jobs.

My take: DOJ will exert max pressure on trump, he will fly off with some docs to a country that won't extradite him and we will avoid any possible negative results from a trial. One can hope.

Fantastic show! I love it when you can hear an expert for an HOUR who is so passionate about their subject. America's problem is it's the middle classes who campaign the most effectively and they're in decline.

I'm Brazilian but as Erin said this problem is worldwide. And it's so appalling that absolutely nobody give a darn about it. Because it's not a sexy topic. Better stick to LGBT and BLM to get more clicks. BTW that movie dark waters gave me the shivers because there's a big Du Pont plant nearby where I grew up in Sao Paulo. And using t fal fry pans since forever.

Jim - Your new eyeglasses are fine. If they're slipping down your nose, try WEDGEES. I've been using 'em for years. They're inexpensive & they work! I have no connection to the company. I'm just a satisfied customer. Check 'em out.
