This is some lore I cooked up: During D-Side Sega's development in a alternate universe, They Chose Ray instead of Mighty as a secondary mascot. Ray's first spinoff game was a massive hit, almost being able to be compared to Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog title. They decided they needed a second one, with even more characters to bump up the ratings, so Mighty the Armadillo was chosen, mostly because they thought another not so recently thought about animal would be fitting. Mighty's lore goes as followed: Mighty was a fellow Mobian but had seen Ray in action and was so moved by it he decided to aid him on his journey. I have purposely neglected to explain the main villain that Ray and Mighty had to fight every so often, Nack the Weasel who also goes by his alias: "Fang the Sniper." Nack was smart and very manipulative villain, and is more than capable to trick everyone as long as they do not suspect him right off the bat. He has successfully won in one on one battles with both Ray and Mighty but if they are working together or realize somethings of, Nack is more than often defeated. Nack's main plan is to make sure he gets a lovely floating island all to himself. In The third game, Maria Robotnik was introduced, a cousin to Eggman. Maria was manipulated by Fang to think that Ray and Mighty were trying to destroy the island and everyone on it. Maria decided that she would do her best to best them, even succeeding in tricking them a couple times. But when Nack knew that Ray and Mighty were not going to give up he stole of Maria's valuable equipment and bolted. Maria found out what happened and decided to help Ray and Mighty defeat Nack/Fang and the rest is history.
